UT houston spring 2010 hopefuls

Published

hi there, I'm a spring 2010 UT houston hopefull, I'm trying to see who else is embarking on this journey so we can support each other. I really enjoyed tracking the Fall 2009 class, and I hope we can do the same. I still have a few classes to take. I am currently taking chemistry. As of now my science GPA is 3.33, and overall gpa is 3.61. I am taking the net in May.

Can't wait to hear from others.

I got the exact same email

i just received this email from someone else. she seems to be more concerned, which i am very thankful for!

Good afternoon,

As far as I am aware the admission/denial letters are still going to be mailed on November 15th. If I hear anything different before then I will email/call you and let you know. I am forwarding your email to the student affairs office so that they are aware of the other nursing schools deadlines.

Thank you,

******

good deal!! Well lets keep our fingers crossed...thanks for finding out

Yes there is a waitlist because I found out a few months ago that people were being accepted into the Spring 2010 class which INFURIATED me and still does to be frank. After digging and finding more dirt there were multiple people who applied to the Fall 09 and were waitlisted and got acceptance packets for the Fall 09 at the last minute (week before class started) and then some others got packets for the Spring of 2010. It appears that some people dropped out of Fall 09 last minute and freed up some slots. I guess on a good note...if I wasnt accepted but waitlisted the road isnt over until the program actually starts because people got calls to come to the program a week before class. On a bad note why on earth would someone from a previous application pool be a shoo-in. They should be put in the mix with all of us and if they make the cut they make the cut. So....not to be Debbie Downer here but some of our slots were taken before we were even invited to interview....it sucks but thats the reality.

keep your head up :) IMO, it seems to be a more efficient way of doing things. I can understand that if you are outright rejected, you'd have to reapply, but being waitlisted seems to be a little different, and rightfully so might I add. Consider this, if they have been accepting students in this matter every year, then is it really that much of a disadvantage to the rest of us? What about those that applied, most likely also applied to other schools. If they had the credentials to get onto the UTHSC-H waitlist, they most likely got accepted into another program. In that case, how many people would wait half a year to go to UTHSC-H over a school like TWU for example? Honestly, I think the numbers are low and low enough that we shouldn't worry to death of it :)

good luck and pray that we hear from Houston soon. :smokin:

Hey girl I got ur message but unfortunately I can't reply to it since I haven't had a certain number of posts or something...so hopefully this post finds you (and benefits the others reading as well)!

I also got accepted to both UT and TWU when I was applying and what you should do is ACCEPT TWU and if you get accepted to UT later on (and you want to go there) then just call TWU and decline their offer. MANY of us did...I actually remember calling their school and the lady actually saying "Let me guess...you're going to UT, huh? MMMhmmm...." haha...

As far as the schools go, both really are great...you'll get to do clinicals in pretty much the same top notch hospitals: MDA, St. Luke's, TCH, Methodist, Memorial Hermann, etc as well as outlying hospitals (if you live closer to them). It really all boils down to your clinical experience...a BSN is a BSN everywhere but the connections you make and the experience you gain from clinicals is what it all boils down to in the end. I'm not sure how TWU does their curriculum, but at UT you do your last semester at a "high acuity" area of YOUR choice. You get to choose your top 3 and get a preceptor for that whole semester (12 days or nights I think). If you really like your area, then it could potentially mean a job for you if you really impress them...this is what helped me out the most and I was very thankful to UT for that opportunity. I sincerely don't think I could have gotten a job @ TCH without it...it's a very hard hospital to get into as a new grad esp in the NICU.

UT does have a new curriculum that took effect Fall of '08 and from what I've heard it was a disaster (many people failed the first semester)...the reason it's gotten so hard is because they changed it from a 5 to 4 semester program (increased workload) and they've now started to accept in the spring as well.

I was accepted in the Fall '07 class so I really can't give yall an accurate experience of how it is nowadays. It was definitely the toughest 5 semesters of my life though and I can't even fathom bunching it to 4 semesters...that's what the Accelerated BSN course was! Plus, our patho and pharm professors were amazing but they stopped teaching after our class...I haven't heard great things about the new professors unfortunately. Honestly, I never really even went to class half the time but I had an AMAZING study group and that definitely helped me...the support system you'll get from other students can help you soooo much because let's face it you may have supportive significant others/family members but they totally don't know what you're going through!! Many students had nervous breakdowns...gotta be honest with yall.

As far as jobs, our class was unfortunately the class who graduated during the heart of the recession. Normally everyone starts to apply for jobs February but as you all know there was a huge hiring freeze in the med center. Very few got jobs and we were all VERY freaked out (2 years of nursing school for NOTHING?? Isn't this suppose to be the most stable job!?). BUT at around May-June the whole thing "unfroze" and we all got jobs...quite a few hospitals were actually lacking GN's (Hermann, MDA) so everyone got a scare in the beginning but it all was well in the end. I don't know anyone who doesn't have a job now.

Other things to think about if you want to go to UT is parking. If you're lucky enough to get into the UT housing then good for you (the free UT shuttle stops at the apartments)! For all the rest, try to park on El Paseo (next to UT housing) and take the free shuttle to school it stops there too...gotta warn you though get there early b/c that street gets PACKED with all the students taking it (especially dental students...there are TONS of them!). You can always park in the brown lot or the MDA parking garage across the school but $$$ adds up obviously...just park there if you're late for a test or something lol

I know this shouldn't be a reason why you should choose UT as the school you should go to...but honestly the name alone can impress people (and potential employers). UT just has that reputation I guess...

Ok so I don't know much about TWU but I do work with someone that went there so I'll try to get the scoop and tell yall when I find out. I sincerely hope you all make it! This board helped me a LOT when I was applying so hopefully it'll help you too...=)

gentle tos reminder:

while it is important to be able to network, everyone should be mindful of the following:

  1. it is a small world - when we narrow it down to a state and throw in some personal info, there is actually a pretty good chance someone may recognize you if you are not careful. your privacy is paramount to us.
  2. while allnurses.com is a wonderful place to vent (without excess personally identifiable details) it is not the place to express why ("x" specific person, place or program) is terrible. gripe away, but since we cannot permit allegations to be made about named entities, your care in not naming them is very much appreciated.
  3. please do not give out personal information about others. do not name names where anyone could identify the person in any facility including your nursing programs.

strosgirl-

thank you so much for posting that on here for everyone to read! it REALLY helps a lot!

amazing post, I can only dream of one day being able to repay in the same manner :D

To Ali, are you in the same boat as I am, accepted into UTHSC-SA and waiting on UTHSC-H as our first choice?

MaoKhan-

I was just accepted to TWU in Houston, but waiting to hear back from UTHSC-H, which is my first choice

ah, you are in a worse situation. I have until the 15th to tell em yes or no, sigh.

you would think schools in the same area would want to communicate with each other when it came to when we have to accept/decline offers. i plan on accepting my offer from TWU, but I'll definitely rethink it if I am excepted to UTHSC-H, and possible decline it after all. I would think this would make even more work for them, and it would be easier to all have the same general accept or decline deadline. right?

awesome post stros girl...I hope I get to use all your advice soon :) Anyway good luck everyone....I will be on vacation hopefully not thinking about this and when I get there will be great news waiting for me....LOL
