hi there, I'm a spring 2010 UT houston hopefull, I'm trying to see who else is embarking on this journey so we can support each other. I really enjoyed tracking the Fall 2009 class, and I hope we can do the same. I still have a few classes to take. I am currently taking chemistry. As of now my science GPA is 3.33, and overall gpa is 3.61. I am taking the net in May.
Can't wait to hear from others.
Well after a day from hell....I finally called the admissions coordinator . And she admitted that they made a mistake and pulled my NET from Sep 1st NOT Sep 11th and that she would be calling me later today or tomorrow to set up my interview.....I will say that she isnt very nice or helpful. So....my friend who took the NET and did well Sep 11th is ALSO having the same problem with UT. IT seems like when they ran their final report this past week they didnt count ANYONE who took the NET after the Sep 1st test date...and YES THAT WAS THE FINAL REPORT...which means no more interview letters will be sent out after this last batch. So.....my advice to any of those who took their NET between Sep 1st and Sep 12 and didnt recieve a letter...call the Dean and I bet you a million bucks they didnt update your NET in the system. My friend has contacted the Dean because this happened to her as well and she is afraid to call (the one who reluctantly helped me).....I just want to help anyone who may be wondering why they havent gotten a letter....
This is part of the reason why I've lost interest in UT Houston. It took me 20 calls over two weeks to get them to look at my transcript and realize they didn't count 6 classes as well as reschedule my interview day. While I realize it's probably a busy time for them I can't imagine going somewhere where it's so difficult to get a hold of anyone. And when I finally did get the right person she was so unprepared.
After a week of calls/leaving messages I finally get a call and the woman asked me what day I wanted to switch to. I asked if I could move it to a tuesday or a thursday, to which she responded, "I don't know...actually, I'm not sure what's available, let me call you back later" Why on earth would she have returned my call about rescheduling without even knowing when I could reschedule? And so some time later I get a call saying the only free day is October 5th at 11am, to which I agreed to, not that works for me either, as my professors actually put that "interviews for nursing schools" are not excuses to miss class on the syllabus and I still get docked attendance points. Plus I have a test that day so...bleh.
I didn't mean to rant so much, but I am truly bothered by how difficult working with UT Houston has been and it doesn't leave a good impression of what's to come if I were to attend.
I think I will call tomorrow to cancel, unless I can work something out with my professor.
[edit] my first choice school is UTHSC San Antonio =)
smile2fly- dont give up....you're grades are great and you have 6 months to take the NET and get it where it needs to be. It took me like 5 times but I finally got it....it will happen for you!
cyclicalevents-yes I agree...its frustrating. I am super happy that I was proactive and called to see what the problem was because I KNEW my grades and NET were good enough due to others that had interviews already...mine were higher than some. I cant imagine how many other people re-took the NET after Sep 1st and UT didnt even update theirs scores. My poor friend realized thats why she too hadnt gotten an interview and she was treated terribly by the registrars office and so she had to contact the Dean to complain. I live less than a mile from UT so it is still my first choice but they have gotten under my skin today thats for sure. I was supposed to get a call back today from the admissions coordinator telling me when my interview is and guess what...its 5:30 and nobody called me. Looks like I will have to call up there tomorrow and "annoy" her some more to get my answer. She acted like I was really putting her out by her having to fix the issue that THEY made....I was like are you kidding me lady? Anyway....I am sure she will be mean to me again but I dont care I will contnue to bug them until they fix what THEY did wrong
Nope....I found that out by reading through Fall 2009 applicant thread here on allnurses. I had never heard of that either but after reading that I called and confirmed it with UT and they said that YES that is true. To be honest...this has happened to so many people because NOWHERE on UT's website does it say that. Thank God that I went and read through all those threads from 2009 or I wouldnt have know either. A BUNCH of people didnt get in last semester because of your same situation. Needless to say they were SO angry and upset. Everyone on this blog can confirm that this true about the 70's in both catagories. I am sorry to be the bearer or terrible news but thats why you didnt get one. One girl from Fall 09 applicant pool had a 4.0 and didnt get an interview because she had a 67 on the reading. I think UT should make that more clear for everyone.
I understand where you guys are coming from, and I do agree that it should be posted somewhere on the website that there is a minimum score, just so applicants aren't so confused. However, I do think the NET exam is an effective evaluation tool for the admissions committee. Although some people may have really high grades, a 4.0 or whatever, the NET exam is a good way to evaluate students on an equal playing field, since all schools and professors aren't equal. I also think that requiring students to have at least a 70 in both sections is definitely not asking too much. Being a student at a major four year university, I especially like that they look at this, and not just your GPA like some schools do. In no way am I trying to say that the prereqs, especially the science courses, that we were required to take were easy, but I have taken a couple of mine at a community college, and let me just say there is definitely a difference when it comes to difficulty. Plus, we all know that some teachers, even at the same school, are easier than others. Basically, I think the NET is a great way for students with a bit lower GPA to make up for it, and hey, they have to eliminate some of the 900-some applicants somehow. Also, I'm pretty sure I never saw a place where it said if you received NET scores above a 70 in both sections you're entitled to an interview.
I dont mind the NET either...especially since I did well the last time :) It does help them see where you stand. I agree that it should be known about the 70 thing. And no its not a hard score to get but MANY nursing schools only require a 60 in the Reading. The reading seems to get most people. Anyway...I REALLY hope this drama ends tomorrow and they arent rude when I call them back. I am just thankful they realized their mistake and are trying to fix it. I wont relax until I have a date on the calendar for my WELL DESERVED interview

good luck with everything! it definitely is hard to get a hold of someone over there, but luckily i haven't had any problems once i've actually gotten a person on the phone.
Missmoe- can you please tell me what day you took the NET since you got a letter yesterday? I took my NET Sep 11th...please clarify thanks
I took the NET on August 24th. I do not believe there is any pattern to when they send you an interview letter. By what others at the interview were saying, many applied earlier than I did and did the interview at the same time as me. I would suggest checking the mail daily and calling just to make sure that everything was received by the registrar. It seems that the letters are typed out and mailed about 10-14 days before your interview date.
missmoe- if you go back and read the earlier responses by me you will see what happened...basically they messed up and didnt update my NET scores....they realized they messed up and they are fixing it....I was told that I will be getting an interview but I am waiting to see when....today was a nightmare
