I can't sleep.... today was awful. I work night in the ICU, all adults, never pediatrics. I was sleeping today and woken up by my husband yelling for me, he said there was a baby in the lake (we have a large retention pond next door. ) I bolt out of bed and run outside in my pajamas to find the neighbors attempting CPR on a couch on their porch- I jump in and grab the child off the couch and place him on the floor and resume CPR.

He was saturated, blue, and so cold- no one knew how long he was in the water. I didn't say a word to anyone, just went into autopilot whispering the compression counts and working until the ambulance finally arrived and the EMT placed his hands over mine to take over. He asked quietly if I had any response and all I could do is make a tiny nod no.

the breaths were the worst, I can't even describe the sound , but I know I was getting air into his lungs, but god there was so much water in his lungs. Evertime I try to sleep I hear that awful noise and I keep hearing the moms cries and her repeatedly saying I'm sorry to the other people. The man (turns out it was grandpa that found him) was so upset, he kept hitting the wall with his hands and screaming for help.

I thank god god for my training, autopilot kicked in and during the crisis I tuned out all of the distractions and just did the CPR. I can't imagine he will make it but the officers said he had a pulse and was on the ventilator at the hospital as of this afternoon, no updates since then.

I have done CPR before but at work, this was my first time outside of work and with a child. I hope to never have to do it again. I have so much respect for nurses who work with pediatrics. That was horrible.

Hi,

As the last poster eluded to you may want to see if they are having a CISD for the first responders and participate in that. That may help you work through what you have seen. Good luck and god bless.

Not sure what area you live in, I recently was 2nd on scene for a fatal MVA, (could do nothing) and my local PD/FD had a CISD and invited me to particiapte and I found it very helpful. Small town, everyone knows everyone so that is probably why. It was a teen.

"Critical Incident Stress Debriefing"

I will look into that, thanks. I can't even find the accident in the news yet either, usually stories like this are picked up quick... makes it feel so unreal.

NIC, I have no words. I'm so sorry. You did what you could.

Reach out to the PD/FD, even if they do not have one, they have the resources to refer you. Or call the state EMS Bureau and explain exactly what happened. They will support you. Or your EAP at your job

You tried your best and if he doesn't make it, you gave the family time to say goodbye. Please take care of yourself. Hugs!!

I know this may sound odd, but your story helps me realize more about why I want to go into this field. I've been working in veterinary medicine for the last 9 years. I love it, but the future is limited and I need to think about my career future and the future of my family. Although I've been debating going into nursing for >6 years, I have always questioned why I want to move into human medicine. Career potential, income is a factor, and I think I'd be good at it. These things I've known for a long time, but when I read your story I realized that I want to be able to help in unexpected times, like you did. It was a horrible situation to be in, and I don't look forward to something heart-wrenching like that, but that little one would definitely have died without your intervention. Your heroic efforts sent that baby to the hospital with a pulse and a chance. So, because of that I want to thank you for your story on many levels. Hoping for a speedy and happy healing for both you and the toddler.

I don't know where you live OP but this little guy may have more of a chance than normal if the water was cold.

Sending you healing thoughts and big hugs. The gift you gave this family is priceless - you gave this little one a chance and no matter the outcome you gave the family time.

Doing CPR on a person is never easy, let alone on a child. You did what you could. What happens next is out of your hands. Take care.

Having been a former EMT , OP I could tell you that you did your best and nothing else would have helped. I've had calls similar to those and CPR did not work. Movies like to show people miraculously being revived after CPR, truth is it barely works, even with AHA's so called "high quality CPR". Unless that incident was caught within the first 30 seconds to 1 minute, CPR was started immediately and there's an AED immediately available. By the time neighbors run to your house and run back to scene several minutes would have gone by. Only hope would be had it been cold water, kids tend to make come back from those but even so, actions needs to be prompt and immediate. Take heart that you did all you can, I'm sure the neighbor were grateful for the effort.

Good job! But I'm still scratching my head on the words "Warning and Graphic" in your title??? If you're trying to get hits on this page, it worked!
