Used CPR on my neighbors toddler today... it wasn't enough... warning, graphic..

I can't sleep.... today was awful. I work night in the ICU, all adults, never pediatrics. I was sleeping today and woken up by my husband yelling for me, he said there was a baby in the lake (we have a large retention pond next door. ) I bolt out of bed and run outside in my pajamas to find the neighbors attempting CPR on a couch on their porch- I jump in and grab the child off the couch and place him on the floor and resume CPR.

He was saturated, blue, and so cold- no one knew how long he was in the water. I didn't say a word to anyone, just went into autopilot whispering the compression counts and working until the ambulance finally arrived and the EMT placed his hands over mine to take over. He asked quietly if I had any response and all I could do is make a tiny nod no.

the breaths were the worst, I can't even describe the sound , but I know I was getting air into his lungs, but god there was so much water in his lungs. Evertime I try to sleep I hear that awful noise and I keep hearing the moms cries and her repeatedly saying I'm sorry to the other people. The man (turns out it was grandpa that found him) was so upset, he kept hitting the wall with his hands and screaming for help.

I thank god god for my training, autopilot kicked in and during the crisis I tuned out all of the distractions and just did the CPR. I can't imagine he will make it but the officers said he had a pulse and was on the ventilator at the hospital as of this afternoon, no updates since then.

I have done CPR before but at work, this was my first time outside of work and with a child. I hope to never have to do it again. I have so much respect for nurses who work with pediatrics. That was horrible.

I definitely wasn't going for hits, I didn't want someone to click on it and get upset about the content. I know if I had personally lost a child to drowning reading my post would be upsetting. The last thing I want is to cause pain to another mother.

Good job! But I'm still scratching my head on the words "Warning and Graphic" in your title??? If you're trying to get hits on this page, it worked!

You're obviously not a mother to young (or formerly young) children. If you were, you'd understand.

I have worked with nurses and paramedics across the US. I have worked with the finest people in the US. We are ALL affected by the loss of a child and take time to regroup after a loss of any child's life.

Now, if you are a nurse and you are unaccustomed with caring for and resuscitating children it is an even greater loss. Most nurses are not even trained for crisis in the field and are difficult at best...but the crisis involved with a traumatic injury/drowning of a child is even more difficult.

Nurses come here to find comfort and camaraderie of their peers and the AN community!

OP...you responded professionally and did your best. ((HUGS)).

are there any more updates :( hoping for a miracle

Nothing yet, neighbors are all out, assuming at the hospital- I think that is possibly good news - if it was 'over' I think they would all be home maybe...

i will update as soon as I know something. Thanks for the support, getting it out has helped so much for me.

If he doesn't make it, you still made a huge impact by providing correct CPR in time for paramedics to arrive. As horrible as it is, I cant even begin to imagine....you gave the family a chance to say goodbye.

Praying for some kind of miracle! Praying for you op

Wow.. just got another update from the neighbors, the baby is off ECMO and has woken up, opening his eyes and reaches for the ventilator tubing, they say he will have the ventilator removed soon- AMAZING NEWS!!

They think he will be ok... I am FLOORED... didn't expect this news- still worry if they are seeing reflexes or if he is actually awake but my goodness, that is a miracle!!

this little boy was blue and cold when I got to him, I thought for sure the CPR I was doing was for not, that he was gone, so glad I was wrong.

That is terrific news. I know I'm making a big assumption but I'm guessing the water was very cold. Cold water drownings are much more likely to be survivable. Rescuers have a mantra "they ain't dead until they're warm and dead". CPR is indicated in cold environment injuries (drownings, exposure, avalanche and such). Look up the "dive" reflex. Really interesting science.

On a side note I wonder if they used surfactant as well.

I don't know the water temp but it has been between 70 and 80 the last few weeks, he was very very cold so maybe that's what helped. And I found out he didn't go to our local hospital but to Nemours, a huge children's research hospital so I am sure they did everything new and innovative to save this baby. The neighbor is going to find out the room number so I can go visit if they are ok with it. í ½í¸í ½í¸

I have tears from your update, NursinginChaos.

Thank you so much for sharing this - as a mother of a three-year-old, I was grateful for the warning. It took me three days to read anything but your initial post, and I'm crying right now! When you mentioned how cold he was I was hopeful. I am the opposite of religious, but I can't think of anything closer to a miracle than you being present to start CPR right away. Lots and lots of hugs!
