*UNEMPLOYED NURSES*

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Ello~

I'm just curious to know, for those of you who are unemployed nurses, exactly how long have you been looking for work? What are you (LPN,RN,BSN-RN,MSN-NP,etc.) How many previous years of experience do you have? Where are you located? How many applications do you think you have placed? What about interviews? Add anything else that you want! Vent, tell us how you REALLY feel, give your opinions/outlooks on everything.

what influx of retirees??? the nurses i work with that are near retirement age (70) all plan to die on the job (no joke).

i meant the large amount of the public that is supposed to be retiring now (baby boomers etc) not nurses. i do agree that most of these people will probably not retire because retirements took a huge hit. check page 7 of the thread for a conversation about retiring nurses :)

thus, the government should not waste more money on new nurses.

so you are in favor of studying the mating habits of the pot-bellied spotted howling gecko wombat :)? just kiddin, i understand what you are saying. my random thoughts are not always the best lol

Words can't express how my heart breaks as I'm reading your posts. I feel for all you guys because I know what you are going through. I feel as if you guys have been betrayed by a system that only cares about making money. Hang in there. Some of you guys will have to relocate or pursue something else. My prayers goes out to you.

They didn't offer me the $12 an hour job. They hired someone else. Sadly, I would have taken it if they had. Don't know how I would have paid the mortgage, though.

Wow that's completely frustrating. Like I said..I used to waitress at a breakfast place and make double that. Sure, my hours were set at about 30 hours per week...but it was a pretty decent paycheck and I can't say I was terribly stressed. Ya don't really know stress until you get into nursing school lol. Now everything seems much easier :).

The more I read this thread, the more I regret my BSN.

Right now I have basically a worthless piece of paper that I paid $80,000 for.

Hey there! I feel your frustration. While I did not complete my BSN (I'm a LPN) I am still a little bothered by the fact that I wasted any time. In fact, that bothers me much more than the insane tuition that I paid..just for my LPN!

However, I have found that I am slowly being able to let go of the regret and anger by being big enough to admit to myself...this field isn't what is was cracked up to be and it's not going to get better any time soon. I refuse to be in denial and "hope" for another 2+ years that I will land a nursing job, because in another 2+ years I know I'll really have a reason to be angry if I wasted more time on nursing.

Am I still applying to jobs? Sure. It doesn't hurt to shoot your resume around. But in the meantime, I am applying EVERYWHERE. Reception, customer service, hotel housecleaning, waitress positions, administrative assistant positions, tutoring, nanny/daycare assistants, etc.

I welcome any stable paycheck at this point. I think I'm lucky because I took the LPN route and rejected the RN program. I don't have any current tuition debt and I don't have any major bills to pay because I have always lived WELL below my means. At same time, it's a tid bit depressing because I have wasted a few years on nursing and have watched many of my peers enjoy themselves, travel, party, get married, start families/have babies, and here I am with not much to show for.

I try to look at the bright side, like I said...no tuition debt and no huge bills to pay..but I feel stagnant. I don't want to just live to survive. I would like to progress and admitting that nursing doesn't offer that has taken a huge weight off my shoulders. I feel very lucky to have figured that out as quickly as I did.

This is such a great thread! I think that it is important that we let people know the real deal.

Nursing edu is becoming just like all the other garbage that you see on daytime TV. Advertisements for: Culinary school, Careers in healthcare (MA, HIT, front desk), Crime investigation, Interior Design, Fashion Design, etc. They should just add nursing to this set of cheese. Hey, if there is a sitcom on TV about it you can be sure there will be some college offering you a way to do just what your favorite stars are doing on TV!!! What an exciting life!! :lol2: It can be yours if you call this 1-800 number, NOW!

Lol, omg I could have written that. You took the idea straight from my head ;). You are SPOT on, but there are still a lot of people who haven't seen it for what it is. I'm really glad I started this thread. It gives people a place to come to and know that they aren't alone and that there isn't ANYTHING wrong with them and EVERYTHING wrong with this "profession".

But if they did that, they wouldn't be raking in all that overpriced nursing tuition! ;) So the downward trend continues. I'm glad I'm doing my research on this field now. I thought I had it bad in the childcare field, but after reading this thread, I feel extraordinarily lucky!

i worked in a daycare after h.s. and i loved it! much more job satisfaction than nsg, for sure.

One of my friends is finishing her Childhood Education degree and makes $12/hr as a preschool assistant and she is happier than anyone I know. Her job is SO easy. Ok..well, easy if you love kiddos :). Once she finishes, they have a supervisor position that pays $17/hr. I know it's not a lot of money by any means, but the fact is, she's happy and employed..not many nurses can say that these days.

Sigh, just got back from running errands and stopped by a Rehabilitation Facility to ask them if they needed nurse volunteers. The assistant manager snickered and said something in tagalog to one of the employees and practically glared at me and said "No, we don't need any volunteers. There are no openings." I guess you had to have been there. I'm trying..but it's really demeaning to be a "part" of this field...if you can even call it that at this point.

I know what you mean, I feel like people are laughing behind my back when I go in to apply for a job, oh weel I just applied for an administrative asst job at a insurance brokers office, hopefully I will get it and put this nightmare behind me, I am so discouraged and disgusted I really don't want to apply to anymore jobs and know they are throwing my resume in the garbage as soon as i leave or just about laughing in my face I am done, with all of it.
