*UNEMPLOYED NURSES*

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Ello~

I'm just curious to know, for those of you who are unemployed nurses, exactly how long have you been looking for work? What are you (LPN,RN,BSN-RN,MSN-NP,etc.) How many previous years of experience do you have? Where are you located? How many applications do you think you have placed? What about interviews? Add anything else that you want! Vent, tell us how you REALLY feel, give your opinions/outlooks on everything.

I know what you mean, I feel like people are laughing behind my back when I go in to apply for a job, oh weel I just applied for an administrative asst job at a insurance brokers office, hopefully I will get it and put this nightmare behind me, I am so discouraged and disgusted I really don't want to apply to anymore jobs and know they are throwing my resume in the garbage as soon as i leave or just about laughing in my face I am done, with all of it.

Laughing at me is the biggest sense of acknowledgment I've gotten so far. I doubt most employers even read my resume. I'm also disgusted with this field and I am glad you're doing something about it instead of waiting around like a fool and "hoping".

That's exactly why I stopped at LPN! I got to see nursing for what it is. I swear the hospitals I was at were literally 90%+ foreign nurses. How do I know? You can barely understand their English! I just don't understand why they are still hiring foreigners with all of these capable/willing U.S. nurses.

How in the world does this statement justify your educational aspirations?

Your stopped at LPN because of what you saw?Let me understand this from your perspective, are you saying your "destiny" for want of a better word, was curtailed because of another human being(s) seperate from you?

Unbelievable. If I understood it correctly and that was your reasoning, then that was not a good one.

What do you find so unbelievable? Why does it bother you that I was smart enough to stop after I finished my LPN and reject my acceptance into the RN program? We're talking about unemployed nurses here! If you want to ask me a personal question, private message me. You're nitpicking on a personal decision.

You are a cheerleader of negativity.

You come here and says how you hate other nurses and that they are bitter and disgusting. You say the field is pathetic, that the "crummy reality" is that nursing is "just not the best field out there", and then when folks try to counteract your negativity you say they are in denial. However, it looks like you just passed your PN boards last month? How can you be so disgusted with a field you haven't even really yet been a part of? Sure we all have friends that can lend insight, but if you rely so heavily on that insight then why did you go through that year of school in the first place? I'm sure you saw that your friends were having problems getting employed a year ago.

You'll also see that this is not really a problem unique to nursing. New grads from all professions are having difficulties. It's all very sad.

You say you were smart enough to reject your RN school acceptance. I can't say I agree. School is a way to make some connections, and maybe land a job as an LPN while you're there. LPN experience can look good on your resume. Also, the outlook might be a little better in 3 years.

Or, you could always go back to what you used to do. Really, in the grand scheme of things a year isn't all that long and nursing school could be a blip in your rear view if you choose to go back. Remember with the economy though that going back isn't always that easy.

I guess I don't understand the hostility against the profession when you've been licensed less than a month.

I'm a cheerleader of REALITY. There's nothing hostile about my post. If I'm hostile, I guess the entire group of unemployed nurses that replied is also hostile. Are we not allowed to vent? What does it matter to you whether or not someone likes nursing? If you're employed and doing things with your nursing degree, the last place you'd be wasting your time is on an unemployed nurses thread.

I never hid anything about my background and I find it funny that you are attempting to use it against me, as though I have some kind of hidden agenda. What in the world do I get out of asking unemployed nurses what their experiences have been like?..and YES, I do find the behavior of MANY nurses to be rather disgusting, vicious, and cruel. I have witnessed many things myself.

Does the fact that I'm a brand new LPN make me less credible somehow? If you don't like my opinion and are also bothered by the fact that I make it LOUD and clear that I turned down RN school, then you simply shouldn't read this thread. This thread isn't about lying to people and telling them nursing is this grand, recession-proof, in-demand sort of profession. It's a thread where the unemployed are coming to vent. Didn't you read the title?

No hostility..only reality here :).

Did you read my post?

Hidden agenda...using your background against you...is it really that serious? Unemployed nurses are definitely allowed to vent. I just got a job last month myself, and I was especially worried because I had to move right after graduation so I thought I was screwed but luckily for me it worked out. I was in the right place at the right time and landed a job. Because I've been employed for a month doesn't mean I can't read here.

Where did anyone say LPNs aren't credible? I was an LPN and my experience helps me every.single.day as an RN. What I said was how can you have so much negativity (again with the calling nurses nasty and whatnot) for a field you haven't worked in yet?

You think I don't like that you turned down a spot in an RN program? I'm tickled you think I care. What I said was in MY opinion (which is what you get when you post on public message boards) it might not have been the smartest thing because it might have helped you get a job as an LPN, which in turn might help you get a job as an RN when you are done if is your ultimate goal. If it's not you have two options- cut your losses and go back to what you were doing, or continue to try to find employment as an LPN.

No one is lying in this thread. At this point no one here thinks this profession is recession proof. You're preaching to the choir, but you're also putting the choir down with comments of your disgust for the profession.

Apparently you do because you mentioned it.

Speak for yourself. There are still a lot of people out there that think nursing is recession-proof and in demand. Visit the pre-nursing or student forum.

I'm finished replying to you. You really don't have anything relevant to offer to this thread. I know for a fact if I was hired/working I wouldn't be wasting my time on an unemployed nurses thread.

I chuckled when I saw this- "a disgruntled LPN upset with her lot". Am I reading this correctly?

If I am to infer from your posts( pls correct me), it does not sound particularly happy. Again, please correct me if I misinterprete. If you're still in the nursing field, and in the hospital, you do realise that the RN which appears you look down on, would have to supervise or at best, have some precedence in some matters, hospital policy allowing.

Have I misinterpreted anything?

Gently Bree, your post sounds quite angry. Does one's employment status make certain threads exempt?Nurses have empathy and might I add freedom of speech:)

Calm your ire, it will get better. This too shall pass:)

Yes, lots of people think nursing is recession-proof. What I said was no one here, in this thread about how hard it is to get a job, feels that way.

You are absolutely right, I am only a new grad who got a job less than a month after licensure in a city where I had no connections. I couldn't possibly have any advice to offer a job seeker. My bad.

Well I'm glad it is not just me, but it is scary, I am on the edge of financial ruin, and sinking fast, I love nursing, loved my clinicals, and wanted this more than anything, but I am sorry to say, it has become impossible for me to stay in the field, I have to find a job any job.

The nursing shortage was not engineered or misrepresented. The economy tanked and the large number of RN's expected to retire find that they can't afford to and they are remaining in the workforce. Additionally, the number of RN's that are mothers that typically cut down on hours, may have an unemployed spouse at home and they are now the major breadwinner. quote]

B,S, this is the most ignorant statement I have ever read on this site. Yup, nothing to do with all that television, web site advertising telling us to enroll now!! (the nursing shortage will only get worse by 2012):yeah:

Ignorant? No just working and hiring in a major city hospital so actually have a finger on the pulse of nursing in the urban setting.
