UC Davis New Grad Residency Fall 2020

Published

Is anyone planning on applying? Application period opens up April 29th. I am curious how it will work out with unit placement when so many programs in CA did not get to finish their preceptorships.

Hello everyone,

My application changed from application received to application under review.

Don't really know what does that means but hopefully some good news.

Thanks:)

Hi! Congratulations on the update in status!! Did you request a specific unit? Or if you completed a preceptorship, did you complete it in a specific specialty? Hoping for an update to my status soon ?

I did mention in my cover letter that I would love to work on Peds or Oncology units. My school does not offer preceptorship, and I still did not finish school, but we do have clinical every semester and a lot of hospital experience. Mostly Med-Surg though.

I hope your status will change soon!

Best wishes:)

I meant it changed to “under review.” I did my preceptorship in the ED, but I’ll take anything

We were able to stay in the hospitals until March and finished our hours outside of the hospital while staffing COVID emergency operations. Not a perfect experience but definitely still something. I'm located in Southern California though so it may be different by region! Did you request a specific area? I'm wondering if they are going to be as strict about preceptorships as they have been in the past seeing as so many people have had theirs cancelled or altered ?

That’s what I’m concerned about haha! Based on previous cohorts UCD tends to place you where your preceptorship was.

I did my nursing school in Chicago (I’m from Socal tho originally), and with my program being an ABSN our last semester consisted of 7 weeks Med Surg II (which I was able to complete) and 7 weeks preceptorship which started in March, so kind of got unlucky there! I didn’t request a specific area, but my resume clearly indicated where I did my rotations/units I did them in so IDK if they’ll use that as a judgment.

I'm sorry about your preceptorship! From looking through other forums it seems like other people are in the same boat so hopefully they are taking other factors into consideration, as I'm assuming many new grads who still had rotations/preceptorships to complete in the start of 2020 will have had them cancelled or altered.

I hope so! I’d be shocked if they didn’t take it into consideration given it’s something completely out of our control.

I applied in the Spring. Since my last application, I added ACLS, NIHSS, ECG, and FEMA Emergency Management certifications to my application. In addition, I reached out to hiring managers directly. I also restructured my whole resume and created a new, more effective cover letter. My last application never had a status change, but this one has proceeded to Under Review. Fingers crossed!

Edit: For reference, I graduated in Dec 2019. Senior practicum in Surgical/Telemetry and extracurricular preceptorship in ICU.

That's amazing! How did you go about reaching out to hiring managers? Were you able to find names and contact info for specific units you wanted, or are there general recruiters you reached out to for the residency program as a whole? Also, congratulations on the update and good luck!!

ACLS from NorCal Emergency Medical Training (through AHA), ECG through my school, and NIHSS and FEMA are free.
