Trump’s assault on Postal Service and voting is a plot against American democracy | Editorial

On Thursday morning, after months of attacks on the United States Postal Service and vote-by-mail, President Donald Trump admitted that the two efforts are connected as a part of one voter disenfranchisement effort. In a Fox Business Network interview, Trump said that the sticking point for him in the negotiations over a new coronavirus economic relief package is Post Office funding: “If we don’t make a deal, that means they don’t get the money. That means they can’t have universal mail-in voting. They just can’t have it.”
Wednesday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling to reject a request by Pennsylvania Republicans to ban counting any mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day but received Nov. 4 through Nov. 6 is a victory for democracy. The GOP had argued that the state Supreme Court overstepped its bounds by allowing the three-day extension.
The party’s efforts have been consistent with what clearly is a campaign by Republicans nationally, in Harrisburg, and in some Pennsylvania counties to severely circumscribe the tabulation of mail-in ballots. Also concerning is a statement by Justice Samuel Alito that accompanied Wednesday’s ruling and implied that the court could hold a full hearing on the request after the election, potentially invalidating ballots counted during the extension.
The vote-by-mail option, widely expanded for the first time nationally due to COVID-19, is being used far more by Democrats than Republicans in many states, including Pennsylvania, which has 20 electoral votes crucial to President Donald Trump’s reelection strategy. In its Sept. 17 ruling, the divided state Supreme Court said ballots must be postmarked by the time polls close and be received by county election boards at 5 p.m. on Nov. 6.
The Republicans who control the Pennsylvania legislature were determined to derail every effort by Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf to enable the counties to open — but not begin until Nov. 3 to tally — hundreds of thousands of ballots statewide that are coming in before Election Day. Reportedly, the GOP walked away from an eleventh-hour deal the governor brokered to allow “pre-canvassing” those ballots. The party’s national strategy seems designed to suppress turnout, intimidate voters in places like Philadelphia, and interfere with the sanctity of voting itself....
...Trump and his campaign have made absurd allegations of wholesale mail-in voter fraud and preposterous predictions of “rigged” elections and final results unavailable for weeks or even months. Trashing Philly is a Trump campaign theme.

But regardless of party or zip code and despite the pandemic, many voters seem unfazed. More than 75 million have already cast ballots nationwide — and more than two million Pennsylvania voters have delivered their ballots. Voters are doing their duty and upholding their end of democracy’s greatest bargain. Those elected to positions of power ought to do the same.
SALEM, Ore. — A federal judge has ordered the U.S. Postal Service to take “extraordinary measures” to deliver ballots in time to be counted in Wisconsin and around Detroit, including using a priority mail service.
Chief U.S. District Judge Stanley Bastian in Yakima, Washington, issued the order on Friday after being presented with data showing on-time delivery of ballots sent by voters was too slow in Michigan and Wisconsin. They are both “battleground states” in the November election.
Delivery of ballots in the USPS' Detroit district, for example, has dipped as low as 57% over the past week, Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson's office said Saturday.
“Every vote must be counted,” Ferguson said. “Our democracy depends on it.”
National on-time delivery has been at 93% or higher, said the statement from Ferguson, who leads a coalition of 14 states that filed a lawsuit on Aug. 18 over changes to the Postal Service.
MIAMI — Special agents with the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General discovered 48 pieces of election mail sitting in a post office in South Miami-Dade County on Friday, the office announced Saturday morning. Forty-two of them were ballots that had not yet been delivered to voters, officials said, while the other six had already been filled out and were brought to the Miami-Dade supervisor of elections Friday night.
The agents "combed through every bit" of mail sitting at the Princeton post office near Homestead on Friday after reports of a backlog of mail piling up at the facility just four days before the Nov. 3 election.
"Office of Inspector General special agents confirmed the presence of delayed mail and subsequently located approximately 48 pieces of election mail," said Scott Pierce, the Special Agent in Charge for the USPS Inspector General’s Southern Area Field Office. The USPS "immediately arranged for the delivery of the election mail."
My mail used to be delivered ~ 4PM in years past. Newer Postal carrier was delivering by 5PM. This week he delivered at 7PM 2 days -was out 6:30PM on Halloween with kids out in the street... Carriers are told they must leave on time, even if mail delivery from sorting location late arriving in 10 minutes --told to come back later to get it -inefficient. This is clearly mail voter suppression in contested states, IMHO.
Judge Emmet Sullivan of the US District Court of the District of Columbia ordered the United States Postal Service to sweep all processing facilities by 3 p.m. ET in a number of states, including some critical battleground state.
The order mandates that USPS postal inspectors "or their designees" must start sweeping the processing facilities by 3:00 p.m. ET.
According to the order, this is,
"to ensure that no ballots have been held up and that any identified ballots are immediately sent out for delivery."
The sweeps must be conducted in the following USPS districts:
Central Pennsylvania
Philadelphia
Detroit
Colorado
Wyoming
Atlanta
Houston
Alabama
Northern New England (New Hampshire and Maine)
Greater South Carolina
South Florida
Lakeland (Wisconsin)
Arizona
Seven battleground states are conducting sweeps and do not allow ballots to arrive after Election Day. They include: Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, Florida, New Hampshire, Arizona, and Maine.

Our mail came at 8:15 last night. Two governmental agencies I have always counted on (just expected them to always do their jobs right) were the Health Department (CDC and down to local levels) and USPS. In the last 4 years both agency's leaders have really disappointed me.

The federal agencies are simply reflecting Trump's corruption and incompetence.
The post office is throwing the court's order to the side and disappearing ballots. I don't think military personnel overseas had their votes counted either. Looks like another election is about to be stolen while MSM is gaslighting the country with calling this and that for him and her with less than half the votes accounted for. It's a mess!

Why didn't Obama/Biden do anything about Qualified Immunity for the police?
In preparation for election night 2020, business in major cities are boarded up and the Nation Guard is deployed -that ain't for Trump supporters. Harris/Biden (yes Harris/Biden because Joe has dementia and will be forced to step down) supporters have already said the riots will ne much worse if Trump gets reelected.

Biden has evolved and Trump hasn't - still the same nasty 10 year old. Antifa is an outlaw group with small numbers so don't deserve the attention and importance you give to them. PA state election law currently prohibits any counting of mail-in ballots before 7 a.m. on Nov. 3. AS in most states, ballot counting done at county level. Therefore 3 million mail in ballots needs to be counted; PA has a "double envelope" election packet <plain inner envelope to hide seeing ballot and cherry picking those for desired candidate) so make that 6 million envelopes to be opened, signature + envelope bar code comparisons. Prior years, had <100,000 mail in statewide.
Governor Wolf, a Democrat, and the Republican-controlled Legislature are are at odds. Seeing the surge in mail-in ballots this year due to COVID-19 fears, Wolf this Summer asked for counties to be allowed to start sorting mail-in ballots 15 days before Nov. 3. Republicans in the General Assembly countered three days, but included that offer in a bill that would ban drop boxes throughout the state. Wolf supported drop boxes, no agreement, so drop boxes placed throughout the state, 50 just in 5 county Philly area.
Per the federal Election Assistance Commission, states that routinely handle large volume of mailed-in ballots, start counting 20 days prior to election day. Twelve states permit vote-counting as soon as mail-in ballot received.
As of 3:30 PM 11/4, PA still had 1,066,963 to be counted.
Current PA law permits accepting ballots until 8PM at voting locations/election bureau. PA state Supreme Court did allow extension of THREE days til this Friday to receive mail in ballots at county election offices due to post office delays. US Supreme court appeal rejected Trump lawyers claim to throw the late votes out. These will be segregated, counted separately added to totals pending future court appeals.
Eleven other states handle mail in ballots same way ---so COUNTING of the ballots will continue for several weeks in order to be CERTIFIED vote.
However final count will take even longer as Trump asking for a recount in Wisconsin + PA. Recount regs in some states require vote to be certified prior to recount being requested. SO hang in there!
