Trouble with getting a job

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

I got my license in November and have been looking for a job ever since, I know it's an awful time to look for a job in general but this is ridiculous. Anyone else having a hard time?

I feel as if a lot of hospitals are not sure what they are doing as far as new grads are concerned. They may need nurses, but just don't have the budgets to train new grads. I am looking basically everywhere in southeastern pa for a job (graduate in May) and once I contact the hospital - they seem like they are not sure if they will be hiring many May grads. I was hoping to know where I would work sooner than later so I would have a better time preparing my kids for the relocation, but at this point I will just be happy to have a hospital job. But it seems I am getting a better response the further West and North I go. We'll get jobs, but we might have to get our feet wet at something that is not our first second or third choice. I am just glad I was not a business major in times like these. Good luck to you all.

Most facilites are not going to hire you without your license. First, the turnaround time is so quick now with the computer NCLEX, second , the cost of orientation is high and then if you fail boards, they have invested time and money and have no return on their inverstment. I know it sounds cold but that is the way of the world.

The nursing shortage is still here and is not getting any better but the economy has definitely dealt healthcare a harsh blow. Unemployment is sky high, no job, no health insurance, no hospitalization. Medicare reimbursement is dropping which effects the hospitals since we are a big Medicare state.

I would say try travel nursing and if push comes to shove take any job you can get int he hospital you want even if it is non-nursing just to get your foot in the door.

does anyone know if hospitals in the charlotte nc area are hiring?

Like you I got my license in Nov. I to have been having a hard time finding a job. The hospital where i worked as a tech is in the middle of a hiring freeze. Just keep looking, someone will give you a chance. Lot of hospitals want so kind of experience right now. I was thinking and have applied for positions in nursing homes too. Just keep applying and call them back. soetimes they like it when people really show interest. I went on an interview and they told me that they would make up their mind on who to hire in a week and start calling people. Well that week came and went and i didn't here anything. I waited another week and i finally decided to call them just to see why i got passed up maybe i had to change something in my interview process. Well i left a message and the very next day they called me back offering me the position. Maybe they were waiting to see who really wanted the position and wanted to see who followed through with a call back. I have to report to employee health next monday and looking to start march 9. Looking foward to it and kinda scary too all at the same time. Don't give up

congrats on your job, I have become what some might call a stalker with calling HR's and hospitals. I did finally get a job doing clinically drug trials but its slow when you have to wait on the patient referrels. The good thing is that I get CEU's for every drug I train on which is very cool. I am going to a staffing agency this Friday so hopefully they can find me something more steady. I guess we all have to hang in there because of the economy. The good thing is I have been bartending on and off since high school and I still have my shifts for the time being.

There seems to be a real hiring slow-down in Pittsburgh. The stock market slump affects hospitals capitol improvements but the decrease in Medicare reimbursements affects the daily operating budgets of the same hospitals. This seems to be a time to take any nursing job one can get, and be happy about it......There will be little picking and choosing on the part of the job-hunter--its now a sellers market.

I have not been working for 1.5 years, going to fulltime grad school then dropped out, I have 30 yrs experience, and I'm having trouble getting back in. AGH is mostly just hiring casual staff. Except there are like 6 positions posted in the coronary step-down unit. I've worked CTICU forever.....but will probably be spending most of a year doing floor nursing....if I'm lucky....

NOT a great time to be a graduating student nurse.....I feel for you guys.

Hopefully my man Obama will get this economy turned around.

so have the new grads hat didnt get work still have to payback their loans after 6 months?

I can't comment about any other hospitals in Pittsburgh, but AGH is hiring GNs hospital wide. The manager of the ICU that I work in has been bringing them through for tours at regular intervals. She has hired several GNs and transferred a couple RNs in from other floors in the hospital. There are openings in just about everything but L&D and neonate ICU. While the job outlook might be poor in some locations, it isn't at WPAHS (http://www.wpahs.org).

ILoveRatties? As in Rat Terriers? If so, we have something in common! (She said as she looked at the Rat Terrier calendar on her kitchen wall...)

I read this post with great interest. I have a friend that is deeply involved with recruitment for Main Line Health Systems in Philadelphia (Paoli Hosptial, Bryn Mawr Hospital, Lankanau Hospital, Bryn Mawr Rehab). I told her of the comments made here and she was very surprised. Friend reported back that MLHS is hiring RNs and GNs. In fact, MLHS is overhiring GNs! If you are seeking a job I suggest you visit www.MLHS.org and apply for any and all positions. Good luck!:w00t:

I think it is getting harder all around, both hospitals that I work for have hiring freezes in place...they are both *major* employers for the region too. I feel bad for the many grads trying to enter into the workforce right now!

I would absolutely LOVE to join MLH after graduation. However, I've put in applications to both of the general postings for GNs, as well as a few staff nurse positions, and have got no response. I spoke with a recruiter and she kind of danced around things, saying they were looking at the "numbers" and the current employees (I assume that meant graduating externs and PCT's).
