Trouble with getting a job

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

I got my license in November and have been looking for a job ever since, I know it's an awful time to look for a job in general but this is ridiculous. Anyone else having a hard time?

I would absolutely LOVE to join MLH after graduation. However, I've put in applications to both of the general postings for GNs, as well as a few staff nurse positions, and have got no response. I spoke with a recruiter and she kind of danced around things, saying they were looking at the "numbers" and the current employees (I assume that meant graduating externs and PCT's).

Same here...I've applied to MLH and haven't heard a word from them. I'm graduated with license in hand, as well...

I read this post with great interest. I have a friend that is deeply involved with recruitment for Main Line Health Systems in Philadelphia (Paoli Hosptial, Bryn Mawr Hospital, Lankanau Hospital, Bryn Mawr Rehab). I told her of the comments made here and she was very surprised. Friend reported back that MLHS is hiring RNs and GNs. In fact, MLHS is overhiring GNs! If you are seeking a job I suggest you visit www.MLHS.org and apply for any and all positions. Good luck!:w00t:

I am currently a RN in contact with someone at MLHS. They are definitely not hiring as much as they used to. In fact, mgrs were alloted "one" GN to hire...min floors got "two" if they were lucky. There are some techs there who graduated did not get a position yet. I will tell you that you have a better chance of passing your boards first. There was an increase of people starting orientation, taking their boards, then failing. They are also doing some construction and Lankenau. With this some floors will actually lose beds since their goal is to go to all private rooms. So far this is one floor done and those patients were transferred to a 24 bed unit as opposed to 34. So TLH is down one floor until it reopens and moves the next floor down. There is a lot going on that an outsider may not know. This is not to say they will not hiring but with other hospitals being ona freeze, everyone wants to come to MLHS. I still suggest applying online and stay on top of them. Advanced Nursing did advertise a job far this April or May and quite a few Philly hospitals are listed including MLH and Jeff. Keep in mind some people may quit or retire. HTH

I had a friend that worked there over the summer was promised a spot in Paoli got a job at Bryn Mawr and lasted 6months. They usually hire GN full time 3rd shift only but no weekends. Some floors are very hard and bad ratios with high acuity pts. Just be careful she is now looking for a job and having a very hard time. Good luck by the way Lancater General is hiring about 20 GN this year.

They still do 8-hour shifts (instead of 12s) there?

Yes I do four eight hour nite shifts a week.

That would be a bummer for me! Not that I wouldn't take a job there if offered, due to the economy, but I'm kinda looking forward to a 3-day schedule. Yes, I know, 12 hour shifts are rough... Do they consider 4-8s a full-time schedule?

Yes four 8's is full time. My floor is trying to steer away from 12's because when you work three 12s you only have to work 1 weekend a month. I have to work everyother weekend. But they can change you when they need you more. This last schedule some people that do 12s had to do some 8s we have a couple out on leave for a few weeks. I am decreasing to three 8s a week but that is part time and I will pick up some extra hours if I need them. With spring and summer coming I wanted some more time with my family. I can go back up if there is a spot later on.

Good Luck

mainline health was at the jair fair today.... they dance around gn, you really have to have a year experience. i would really love to work there but don't no where i'm going wrong. i have call the the recruiter numerous times speak with her in still no call back about an interview. it's really frustrating looking for jobs,i have about 5 month experience all together, but not in a hospital ...if any one can help please email me. thank you.

Hi-I'm brand new here, just registered yesterday. I gotta say, finding this thread gives me mixed emotions...I now feel like I'm not alone in not being able to find an entry level RN hospital job, but I was kind of hoping I was wrong and maybe I was doing something wrong that I could correct! Yikes. I'm in the same boat as a few of you-I got my license in October, and it's been kind of awful. I did find employment, but I really want to be at a hospital (I work in a long term and transitional residential facility for medically fragile children). I'm hoping that this experience will help me find a Peds position in a hospital in, I dunno...6 months? A year?

BarbPA, where do you work?

I was wondering how things are going in the Eastern part of the state as far as hiring is concerned. Was even thinking of coming here and doing a thread asking about it. Now that I have read this thread I guess I know.

I've been looking all over eastern PA/NJ. I have one lead, but no actual offer, and I probably won't know either way for about a month. I'm moving to the area for my boyfriend, who is in grad school out there (and therefore can't move anytime soon!), but now I'm thinking we might have to do a distance relationship for even longer because I can't find a job anywhere!
