Trouble with getting a job

Published

I got my license in November and have been looking for a job ever since, I know it's an awful time to look for a job in general but this is ridiculous. Anyone else having a hard time?

lsm332, I work at Point Pleasant Peds. It's much more chronic than acute. But I am thankful I have anything to be honest- it is tough out there. :crying2: I do my searches just about every other day and apply to anything-PRN, pt, ft-that is Peds related. I usually try to follow up with a phone call in a day or two, but I inevitably get voicemail. Just gotta keep plugging away at it I guess! Again, like I said I really am thankful to have what I have-the Healthcare sections of the Help Wanted areas for the papers-even the Philly Inquirer-have MAYBE 2-3 jobs in the Sunday issue. Last year, there were always PAGES of jobs....

Gogatsby-good luck-I hope your lead turns into an offer!

I am about to graduate and I have tuition forgiveness. I haven't been offered a job yet, but I have interviewed. I live in Pittsburgh. Its really frustrating being tied to a place where they don't even offer you a job, but yet student who don't have the reimbursement are getting jobs left and right.

I feel your frustrations.

according to what i have read, alot of hospitals and ect aren't going to hire GN's becasue they dont want to put all the money out to train you, only to have you fail the test. however, once you pass the boards it may be a different story. similarly, most hospitals have a set budget for new grads, and once they hit a limit then that is it. so you may have to get a job at a nursing home until you find a spot. i just talked to a nurse manager at a hospital in eastern pa and we are expecting some layoffs, but he said that once the adjust the budget then some spots may open up. my advise to everyone would to really try to get in places where you may have existing relationships with the staff, cause of course you would have a better chance there. also go to careerbuilder.com. their are tons of listings for RN's...even in the hospital. of course its going to be quite competetive. the nurse manager also said that places like the ER where their is always a high turnover and need, you may get lucky.

hope this helps. stay optimistic!

If you don't mine who's your friend in recruitment. I have contact just about everybody who invoived in hiring GN. Maybe I'm talking to first when talking to them or messing up emails when emailing them . I know this is an old post. My daughter went to the TJU program. It was great and she loved the hospital.

Hi. My friend is in nursing executive management. I have sent her another email to find out if there is a problem with hiring. Frankly, I sent her an email back when this question was poised and she did not respond. There is a lot of actiivity at MLHS right now and I get the feeling that there are many moving parts. Paoli is the small hospital and the highest desireable. Your best bet is going to be BMH or Lankenau. Lankenau will have more openings. Don't forget that Bryn Mawr Rehab is a big hospital and part of the system as well, they need nurses as well. If my friend updates me I will post her response.

I started my new job (gee, it was a short 4 months off!) and have been quite busy myself. I am off today but then back to 18 hour days tomorrow. Good luck!

thanks it'sme, rn, bba, mba , for responding to my question. good luck on your new job.

Well, here is the answer. From the breveity of the response I get the feeling that there is a lot going on over there.

"They have already hired GNs to fill spots, so there are probably no open positions now, because it is very late. I heard BMH hired over 50 GNs in the winter for summer starts. We also hired GNs months ago, they just have not started yet. Each hospital had FTEs to hire over hires, except Rehab."

So keep knocking on doors. Something will open up for you!

Geisinger will hire diploma nurses, ASN, BSN, etc.... The pool of nurses to choose from in rural PA is very small, therefore new grads have a very good chance of geting a job there. The downside is that the level of nursing expertise doesn't compare to a large metroploitan health system, so the mentoring factor may be lacking. A few of my friends started their nursing employment at Geisinger, and then after a year or two moved on to further their careers.

Hi, Just wanted to say that by keeping an open mind and pounding the pavement, calling, and PACareerLink, I was able to get about 6 interviews lined up and actually got two job offers....one at Hahnemann in Philly and one in East Stroudsburg for a dialysis company. I ended up taking the Hahnemann job because I live in Bucks County and really didn't want to relocate if I didn't have to. Graduated in May 2010 from Aria Health School of Nursing. My advice for those looking for a job at the moment is don't give up, there are positions out there. Take a look at PACareerLink, in one day, I had 5 calls for interviews all over the state of Pennsylvania. If you can relocate or are willing to relocate, do so. I don't think the market will stay like this for long. I start next month at Hahnemann. Good luck and keep your chin up.

I would say that you got lucky. You definitely have to be in the right place at the right time.

Well, I got my issue of "Advance for Nurses", and Reading Memorial is having a nursing open house on 9/18. You have to pre-register. They are welcoming all specialties. If you want more info, feel free to PM me.
