Topic of the Day: GO AWAY FOREIGN NURSES!

World Immigration

Published

This is exactly how I feel each time I log into the International Forum. I don't feel welcome as a foreign born nurse. I don't feel respected as a minority in this country. All I feel is the hatred and insults thrown at us simply because we are not Americans.

So let's talk about it, since threads were locked and posts were deleted because they were "out of the topic" hence we could not freely express and justify how we feel about the criticisms on foreign born and/or foreign trained nurses. Each and every time I read something that "put down" certain minorities, it makes me feel sick to my stomach. Being discriminated all my life, I truly understand how other foreign nurses, especially the Filipino nurses, feel. No, you simply won't understand if you were not in our shoes.

Every one has his/her point of view on certain issues, but attacking, criticizing and (worst) making generalizations of other races, cultures and beliefs is just not right, insensitive and ethnocentric. Yes, we are immigrants, but you don't have to yell it to our face. The US would not have prosper if not for the immigrants. Don't forget your family or ancestors were once immigrants as well, unless you are Native Americans. So you have no rights to ask us get out if we are legally here, unless this is your native land. Remember, America is the land of opportunity that were built through slavery from Africa and Asia.

I wonder sometimes, how could you be a professional nurse if you are culturally insensitive? How could you offer the best care if all you think is your own self and your own beliefs, and disregard other culture and belief systems? I see nurses here with 30 plus years of experience do not practice the basic fundamental of nursing. Maybe they should go back to square one and learn it from Potter and Perry.

This IS an International forum. This forum is for every one regardless of age, gender, color, etc. If you say something culturally insensitive in other forum, maybe we will think that you are just plain stupid or has never been out of the country. But, if you are persistently saying something that insult and disgrace other cultures, races, nationality and etc, I think something should be done by the moderators...unless the moderators themselves are not sensitive enough on this issue as well.

Well, Merry Christmas everyone (no, I'm not Christian...but I know many are here) and thank you for listening.

However, there is also a measure of criticism aimed towards America/Americans for not letting potential immigrants in. Like emigrating to the States is a human right or something. This is just as grating as the anti-foreign Nurse posts.

Every time a Filipino Nurse post a topic in this forum (especially Immigration related), they easily gang up upon by those so -called"American- 1st class Nurses". We always feel 2nd class to them...........immigrant and unwelcome!

I think it's very important to be able to express your feelings and concerns in this thread. I hate that there are such feelings of hositility here among some of you.

However, I also feel it's important not to generalize and exaggerate either. I've clicked on dozens of posts in the Filipino forum and found them informative, so it's not every time someone posts.

I know it's bothersome to read negative reactions but please don't generalize all of us Americans here at Allnurses like that.

Also, you can bring any problems with moderation to the Admin. Help Desk, where moderators can't view it, only the four administrators. https://allnurses.com/forumdisplay.php?f=128

Im sorry for my comment, I will correct my previous post, I meant to my word "those" is that "Some" american nurses tend to generalize and judge Foreign nurses.

I understand, sometimes when you're angry, misunderstood and hurt it's hard to look at the big picture, because some posters ruin it for you. I hope you continue to be positive in your defense foreign nurses.

Could some one post the cultural differences so all can know what is not offensive?

Here is what I find offensive.

For me, I find it very offensive when a nurse talks money even before apply for a position. A good position is more than money as long as it is a living wage.

Second, I find it offensive when non Americans are critical of my government especially when it comes to immigration.

Third, when people think one is racist when a comment is made, I don't think of race, religion, sexual orientation in relation to nursing practice. If I worked in a place that did this I would leave ASAP. As nurses we have to be accepting of all and this should extend to nurse to nurse relations.

Fourth, while I admire immigration to the US, after all my family did this, I don't appreciate the generalization that all Americans are living a dream life. Many US students are living in poverty with not enough to eat and struggle to buy textbooks. Being a student is not easy where ever one is from and getting your first job is very difficult.

Last generalizations are dangerous! There will be exceptions to the rule.

Happy Holidays, why not use this forum to help IEN find positions in what ever place they wish to practice.

Please share what you find offensive?

Well, there are a few American posters who have set themselves up as the arbiters of what constitutes good nursing practice, and several who comment repeatedly and negatively about training in the Phillippines.

I don't, frankly, understand the need to address things that are already known by the INS. And while I do get frustrated at what seems to be the unwillingness, by some who would like to immigrate to the US, to acknowledge the realities of the retrogression and the current harsh American financial situation, I really don't get why some of us are so anxious to educate them about it. If people want to wear blinders I can't make them take them off and I don't feel compelled to make them.

In short, I am expert neither in immigration nor the standards to which our goverment holds foreign nurses, so I mostly keep my nose out of this forum in the interests of MYOB.

I do not post often because of this very thing but i had to come out of lurkdom to say a huge well done to you for posting this topic!! I feel like every post reply on here is negative towards foreign nurses wanting to come to the usa to work. Topics that are meant to be encouraging to foreign nurses or offer insight or hope to those waiting somehow end up mysteriously locked! I am sick of the negative attitude on this board and as moderators I feel it is their job to be BALANCED and IMPARTIAL to everyone not just constantly feeding the negitivity with doom gloom and go to another country statements.

I am very happy to see this post and I am very proud to say........

I AM A FOREIGN NURSE

I AM STUCK IN THE RETROGRESSION

I CANT WAIT TO SEE SOMETHING DONE WITH VISAS

AND I DO WANT TO CONNECT HERE AND BE SUPPORTED BY OTHERS IN THE SAME SITUATION NOT CONSTANTLY BE PUT DOWN AND SCARED AWAY!!!

Well, Merry Christmas everyone (no, I'm not Christian...but I know many are here) and thank you for listening.

Much of the statements you've made bears good points actually. I agree and you are just doing fine. I being a filipino, does also understand your sentiments.

However, through the years that I've been somewhere outside PHILIPPINES and had live USA for almost 15 years already, I have learned to also see things in various ways and learned to appreciate and dealt well with what other nationalities, americans at that, perceives about foreign nurses. YOU can't please everybody and that you must understand your honor.

Much of the americans still believes that foreign nurses, FILIPINO nurses are still good. But when Other Americans says much that the new nurses are inefficient, due to lack of proper training, poor quality nursing education, etc etc ,that we must also understand without being too emotional. You must learn to see these issues in two different ways, and BELIEVE me, we are making sense.

Remember that you dream to come and work here in USA. If there is someone, or anybody who will be affected with the quality of nursing care you'll render, it will be the Americans. So we have all the right to criticize what is happening lately with the craze of thousands of new graduates who seek to apply USA without the posession of the OUTSTANDING skills that USA needs.

In my short stay here in ALLNURSES, I didn't see any comments/messages that are biased and culturally insensitive. Members and moderators are doing well and are just being truthful with eveything.

Try to broaden your thinking and view things in all aspects and take all the comments as a way of reminding you that in this world, what you may think an believe is right, may not be true to others. That you must understand.

Happy x-mas

I'm not saying that negativity towards foreign nurses doesn't exist here at Allnurses. It does, and for the most part we allow it because it's not necessarily a Terms of Service violation. As I've said, we do it to ourselves in our posts in the other forums as well. Nursing is tough, demanding and stressful, and many posts are negative.

I still fail to see where 'every post reply on here is negative towards foreign nurses ", nor will I admit that moderators "constantly" feed into the negativity. As I said most of the posts are from people posting questions and receiving answers.

Is there negativity and cultural insensitivity. I'm afraid there is. Is it coming soley from Americans posting negative reactions to foreign nurses? Not from what I'm reading. There's plenty of negativity coming form the foreign side too. That you feel it's unbalanced is something we'll have to agree to disagree on. It certainly isn't an easy forum to mdoerate. I guess it's one's perspective. (Yes we are aware of a few members who seem to have an agenda here.)

If everyone who reads this thread, both foreign and American, lightens up some, stays positive it can get better.

I hope the Administrator of this site will take notice and monitor "some" moderators who are so anti-immigrant and unwelcome!

I agree.

I agree.

Why don't you quote an actual post where you allege unfairness and bigotry and stop with the innuendo.

:)

Seems to me that the moderators have consistently tried to address the concerns on this thread only to be continually called biased and anti-immigrant.

Bias, prejudice and bigotry flows both ways...
