I just finished watching the Today show interview that Matt Lauer did with Tom Cruise. I'm quite simply mystified by his take on psychiatry. He claims to know more about it than just about anyone, including those with medical degrees. I'm just curious about what others think about his vocal opinion on the subject. Am I crazy or does HE need a psychiatrist?

Psych meds do help a lot of people. A lot of what is being disputed regarding antidepressants is not new knowledge. Let me put it to you this way, if you are depressed you have a higher risk for suicide. Persons who are on antidepressants are definitly depressed. Otherwise they would not be taking antidepressants. To say antidepressants cause increased chances of suicide is very difficult to prove. We all know these medications take several weeks to work, even then, the dosage may need to be adjusted or the medication may even need to be changed. As far as the chemical imbalance goes, yes, depression is caused by a chemical imbalance. Is exercise, vitamins, diet change good for depression? Abolutely. Depression can also be a symptom of another disease process. Someone can apprear depressed for example if they have hypothyroidism or a vitamin deficiency. Bottom line is only a doctor should make that decision/diagnosis.
For the record, I know a bit about Scientology. If you get the chance to read, pick up the book Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard. There is also a biography out about him, and biography talks about how Scientology exploits people for their money.
Curious enough the founder of that religions L. Ron Hubbard was a writer previous to the founding of this church. A science fiction writer.

I tried to explain some of this in GD, but a couple of people were dead set on defending scientology even though they know nothing about it. I even pointed to facts, but they ignored me. People are strange. https://allnurses.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108913
I still like to listen to the Dixie Chicks SING, and I will probably see Tom Cruise ACT again one day. Do I take any health related, political, or god forbid relationship advice from these folks.........
Oh shoot no.
Just because you can act, sing, model, cook or whatever has no bearing to me on whether you can form a valid opinion. After all don't most of thse folks work from scripts or lyrics written by others?? Maybe we know why......

I saw no one defending Scientology in the thread.
I did see posters defending the right of T. Cruise to believe in what he wishes and follow those beliefs without prejudice as long as he is not himself physically harming others.....a right that we have as Americans. It is also Katie Holmes right to become a scientologist of her own free will. She is an adult and he is not forcing this on her.
It is not strange to defend his right to worship as he sees fit. It is the American way. Something that we all should keep in mind, on this July 4th weekend.
You may wish to label Scientology a cult for its' emphasis on money...something that many churches and religions are guilty of. You may wish to label it a cult because they do not believe in most medicine...how many churches and religions are into "Faith" healing or that illness is a result of sin. You may not like the many of their rituals, ignoring the fact that eating the blood and body of your savior is a very gruesome idea to many. And Scientology's emphasis on psych issues and possible brainwashing, plenty of religions are guilty of that.
But it does not change the fact, that unless a Scientologist is doing you direct physical harm or breaks the law, they have the right to worship as they believe.
Unless you are willing to give up your Faith and your right to practice your religion, you have no right to interfere their worship and rituals.
Personally, I abhor Tome Cruise and his ideas but that does not change the fact that he has the right to promote them and allow others to make their own decisions as they see fit.
I remember when I was a kid, L. Ron Hubbard was doing infoercials selling Dianetics. I guess when he died that's when he became a religious figure because when he was alive he certainly wasn't.

after scrolling through the last 12 pages it makes me wonder what all the fuss is about, don't get me wrong it's an interesting topic, but I can see the good and bad in both tom/ scientology and drugs/pyschiatry. And in the mordern and (hopefully) enlightened world I pity anyone who would do any thing just cause tom or some other celeb said to do it. Do these people exsit and what a sad place they live in.
At the end of the day we are all responsable for our own happiness/actions/lives. All tom has confirmed is just how little he knows and how truly tunnel visioned he is for an "enlightened" person. Don't be angry at him, feel sorry for him. What a sad indervidual.
My opinion on the subject is this, 1st of all, I saw him on Oprah acting like an idiot before he even opened his mouth about Katie Holmes, who is in her 20's, 2nd of all,he claimed to have never felt like this before. To me that shows absolutely no respect for his former wives. I wonder what it was he felt with his former wives that he did not feel with Ms. Holmes? And most important...everyone has an opionion, yeah yeah...you know the old saying opinions are like???? Everyone has one???? Enough said!

Tom Cruise is clueless and totally out of line with his comments. His referral to psychiatry as a "psudo-science" is ridiculous. Scientololgy is not really a science , so IT is the psudo-science. His comment about there being no such thing as a chemical imbalance is ridiculous also. There are all types of chemical imbalances within the body and mind - hormonal imbalance, electrolyte imbalance....... The guy is so reactive. He needs to take some anger managment classes. He has no idea of what the heck he is talking about. He has been conditioned by the scientology courses that he takes.
Anyone can "study the history of pscyhiatry" by opening up a textbook or searching the net. However, that does not make one an expert on the practice of psychiatry. He needs to leave the DX to the physicians with the medical degree.

Let them defend their stance of scientology. But the truth is Ron Hubbard is a cult leader. He is there to make money by recruiting members and selling books. Does he have a medical degree ?
Vitamins and exercise are beneficial to everyone, but to assume and promote them as the sole treatment for a mental illness is not only ignorant, it could have disasterous results if someone with a mental illness discontinued their meds and went on vitamins and excercise just b/c some movie star promoted it. I hope that there isn't anyone out there who did that.

He acted like he was on something ! He is also so defensive and reactive when someone asks him questions (like he is trying to hide something).
And I agree, his behavior shows a total disregard and disrespect for his former wives.
