Tom Cruises' take on Psychiatry

Published

I just finished watching the Today show interview that Matt Lauer did with Tom Cruise. I'm quite simply mystified by his take on psychiatry. He claims to know more about it than just about anyone, including those with medical degrees. I'm just curious about what others think about his vocal opinion on the subject. Am I crazy or does HE need a psychiatrist?

Exactly, my point....they are just following patterns/environment of behaviors.

Like I said before....this is my opinion and people should open their minds to new ways of thinking. I'm looking at all my resources and I won't have someone tell me that this is the only way....I'm sticking to good old nutrition as a way of helping alleviate disease and mental diseases. Long term exposure to the wrong elements CAN have an effect....smoking, drinking, stress, wrong diet, environmental toxins, pregnant mother not taking care of herself....being exposed to these elements...all are passed down and copied by infants and children.....a simple drug will not take that away...only mask it. There needs to be a constant self improvement taken by the individuals.

Thank you for your time...but I have exhausted my time here....

I will not be responding to any other posts here...so once again thank you and I hope this has given you something to think about.

P.S. I have experiences of my own, myself and family.....we did not need drugs. It is all based upon environment and patterns of behavior. If a family has known to have a supposed depressed individual in their family and they have taken drugs to alleviate the pain...then the next and the next generation will do so as well. It needs to stop.

Done!

Much of your way of thinking is not "new". It takes us back to the bad old days where people were made to feel like they shouldn't ask for or get help, as if they could somehow snap out of the depression or other mental illness. As a nurse, I certainly don't pretend to know all there is to know about mental illness, and I wouldn't be espousing any particular treatment for any particular patient. I believe that is up to the health care team, with me as a member, but with a doctor running the necessary tests to arrive at a definitive diagnosis and working with the patient to come up with the best treatment plan. It is not "all" based on environment and patterns of behavior. There are very few absolutes in health care, which is one of the very first things I remember being taught in nursing school. If that is how things worked for you, that's just lovely, but other people may desperately need the help pharmaceuticals provide (in conjunction with other interventions, such as diet, exercise, stress reduction, etc) I think that other people need to open their minds up to accepting what research has shown us and trusting in patients and their doctors to make decisions, not based on what has worked for us, but what is right for them.

:rotfl: Tom is to psychiatry as Arnie Swarz is to politics. The two should NEVER mix! :rotfl:

Exactly! I just posted about Arnie Swarz! :rotfl:

I know this was mentioned a while ago, but for the record, Michael Jackson is a Jehovah's Witness.

And as for Gary Null, here are some notes:

Well, according to Tom Cruise (my new God ;)), scientology and other religions are not mutually exclusive.

I know this was mentioned a while ago, but for the record, Michael Jackson is a Jehovah's Witness.

actually Michael jackson is NOT a jehovah's witness and hasn't been for over a decade. He officially left the religion a long time ago and hasn't been active since the mid to late 1980's.

Actually, I can't remember what he is, but he's involved in the teaching of Louis Farrakhan (?). I can't remember if it's a branch of Islamic teaching or not.

On Tom Cruise: I'd really like to see what happens when his little Katie one day has a baby and she has to deal with an overwhelming PP depression/and or psychosis. I don't believe all the vitamins in the world will help her with horrible feelings of depression.

Please understand, I'm not wishing this on Katie Holmes. I just want to bring the point across as to what he'd do if his loved one is having trouble with PP depression (or any other depression). Saying to "just snap out of it" or take more vitamins or meditate, etc. isn't going to work and might lead to tragedy.

i do remember something about him being interested in the "black muslims" religion. Don't know whatever happened with that though. Tom needs to head to a psych ward and spend a month with those patients and then maybe he wil revise his opinion. I am just a student but i was a school health assistant and routinely gave out ritalin, and there were some whose parents were lax on getting the prescriptions refilled and after the withdrawal time the kids didn't seem much different than before when they were on the drug, but there were 2, who were COMPLETELY different kids off the drug, and let me tell you one threw such a big fit (1st grader) he ripped the phone off of the wall and threw it and he had to be kept by himself in the pricicpals office until a parent could come because he was so violent and out of control. the other one just literally couldn't stop talking or stay on task. On the meds they played well with the other kids and could actually settle down enough to learn. So yea some children do need these meds, even though many others may not.

On today's CNN news, I read where Concerta must now have a label attached to every prescription filled warning the parents that the drug can cause psychotic episodes...even cause suicidal thoughts. Did anyone else see this?

Hey cheerfuldoer! :)

Do you by chance have a link to this? I would like to see it if possible (maybe I'll head over to CNN.com and try to find it).

I have adult ADD and have been on Concerta. I don't believe it's a good drug! I felt my ADD was worse ON the drug than off. I'd get this "spacey" feeling which was worse than the ADD itself. Fortunately, I had a great PA who understood the problem and was placed on something else.
