  1. I agree and disagree. Yes, it is a pain to have to wait so long and you have a point in that they should record who does not have any problems. However, here is a senario that occured at my workplace: We had the bloodmobile visit at work , 5 persons out of 40 persons who donated blood, fainted. Another 5 or so had complaints of light headedness. 1 person out of the 5 that fainted had to seek medical attention becuase she hit her head on the pavement in the parking lot. Our workplace has decided not to have the bloodmobile return as that the risk of liability issues is too high. Some of the persons who fainted reported that they skipped breakfast. One person skipped breakfast and had a predonation blood pressure of 90/58. I did the QA survey after our company had complaints following the blood drive, and found this to be an unusually high occurence of problems. Just for the record, it was not the Red Cross who ran the bloodmobile.
  2. Thanks for the feedback. I know most of us can't afford lawsuits but there has to be a way. it must be illegal to do that to someone.
  3. I know its a double standard, and it isn't so much the administration but the patients. Many ladies either laboring or post partum feel uncomfortable with a male nurse. I don't understand why, they totally accept male obstetricians. This is just the experience I have had working in ob's with male nursing students. I found a lot of the patients asked if they (the male nursing students) did not participate in their care. I don't get it. Advice, you said you would enjoy NICU. I would advise you to take that route.
  4. Yes, I could easily find a job. However being a part of a system I believe to be unfair is another. I am a very outspoken person, if I find something to be wrong I speak up. I don't know how long I would last in an environment such as this without eventually becoming black balled myself.
  5. I have been considering moving to Texas. However, after reading this thread I am not sure I want to get involved with employers who utilize these questionable practices. I would think that this would be illegal and if someone ever pulled this stunt on me, I would sue them in court for defamation of character.
  6. Texas most definitly. MY daughter just moved there. The housing is really inexpensive. The salaries are really high. I am considering moving out there myself.
  7. Never heard of them to be honest. However, they could be new. I have been out of New York for 9 years now. NYC is very expensive. I am concerned that you are only making 20 bucks an hour in New York City. Down here in Florida that is a great salary. Up there, things are so high. How long is your commitment, before you can move on?
  8. Not at all, those are my insurance premiums that are taken out of my bi-weekly pay. The 250 dollar daily deductable is the deductable on my insurance for in patient stays. I had an inpatient stay 2 months ago for surgery. The surgery was not done at the hospital I worked at. I value my privacy too much for that.
  9. You are all so lucky. Are you sitting down for this one? I pay 280 a pay period for health/dental insurance. I am paid every 2 weeks. " I remember working last week? Where's my pay check?" lol I have a 250 copay for inpatient stays per day. Copay for doc visit 15, specialist 25. Not too happy here in Florida looking to move. Pay here is only 20 bucks an hour. I have 15 years experience as an RN. Thanks for letting me vent.
  10. Long Island is near New York City. Long Island has been known for it's affluent residents. It is the higher rent district. New York state is so big. Most persons when you say New York and they are not from there automatically think the whole state is New York City. New York City is just a small part of the state even though it has the majority of population. What made you pick New York to move to?
  11. I agree with you. What if you were employed full time but looking for a different job. How can you possibly attend an interview with a prospective employer if you are scheduled to work. Do they want you to call in sick? I am sorry but a call from them asking YOU when it would be convient to come in for an interview would be better. No wonder the first person didn't last on the job!!!
  12. I used to live in upstate NY, but now reside in FL. I can say in answer to your questions the schools are okay. It is like any area here in the US. There are good schools and bad schools. Each area has both. The more affluent the area the better the schools. This is very sad to say, but true most of the time: If you live in a low rent district of a city, you will find a lower quality school. Most of the rural areas in upstate have decent schools. I found the problems in the city enviornment. Albany Schenectady Troy area. Hope this helps, but I think once you get up here the best persons to ask, are your co-workers.]
  13. I don't have an answer for you but am interested to hear what others have to say. I got a degree in Computer Programming back in the mid 80's I received my RN in 1990. I said in the mid 90's my dream job would be combining the 2. I was into this before it started, but never figured out on how to use both of these degrees together.
  14. Birth Control Pills regulate menstrual periods and decrease blood loss during that time. I'm sure this pt was on them so that blood loss during her period did not add insult to injury.
  15. Have you thought about asking one of the doctors for his thoughts? You could say, I have heard in the past some nurses (not implicating your co-workers of course) say that you don't need to check funduses on a post op patient, and I have also heard that you should. What are your thoughts and what is the rationale? Don't know how comfortable you feel doing this. I have always worked in smaller hospitals and got along very well with the docs.
