Tom Cruises' take on Psychiatry

Published

I just finished watching the Today show interview that Matt Lauer did with Tom Cruise. I'm quite simply mystified by his take on psychiatry. He claims to know more about it than just about anyone, including those with medical degrees. I'm just curious about what others think about his vocal opinion on the subject. Am I crazy or does HE need a psychiatrist?

 I still like to listen to the Dixie Chicks SING, and I will probably see Tom Cruise ACT again one day. Do I take any health related, political, or god forbid relationship advice from these folks.........

Oh shoot no.

Just because you can act, sing, model, cook or whatever has no bearing to me on whether you can form a valid opinion. After all don't most of thse folks work from scripts or lyrics written by others?? Maybe we know why......

The way I see it -- those people are there to entertain us. I don't want to see them push their love lives onto the public eye, hear them share their political views, etc.

I go to a movie to be entertained. The value of those people are for entertainment only..... and once they have pushed those personal views of theirs onto the public - it is not enjoyable.. therefore, no longer entertaining.

I almost did not go to see War of The Worlds because of Tom Cruise's persistent need to be in the public eye with his love life, his ignorant rantings about psychiatry, and his promotion of scientology. I am personally tired of seeing him, and hearing him talk. Any future movies in which he will be in will be scrutinized before I see them. Speilberg is a brilliant producer, but he should keep Tom Cruise out of his films for awhile. :rotfl:

I just read last night that Kelly Preston John Travolta's wife and Scientology follower, is publicly supporting Tom and his courage to speak out against psychiatry. She also said that Brooke Sheilds was acting irresponsibly for not telling people the dangers/side effects of antidepressants. Umm, sorry but I think that's a health professionals job.[/quote']

When is hollywood and scientology members going to stop trying to practice medicine without a license ?

You are correct. Discussing dangers and side effects of medication should be limited to health professionals and those qualified to do so. That does not include Tom Cruise, Kelly Preston or anyone else, pretending to know what the heck they are talking about.

I admire Brooke Shields for defending her position, and being courageous about her condition. She is a celebrity too, and many women who suffer from post-partum depression may feel better knowing there is a someone of such fame who share their pain.

Well, he is entitled to his opinion. However, I can't imagine why a national news program would dedicate a significant amount of time for an actor, and not an authority on the subject, to discuss his personal views on psychiatry and religion. Aren't there more important things going on in the world? The war in Iraq gets less than two minutes of attention every morning on the Today Show, but Tom Cruise rambles on about Brooke Shields and the evilness of taking psychiatric medications for about ten minutes. It just doesn't seem quite right. Personally, I don't really care about the views of Tom Cruise. He's obviously doing this for publicity and to further his own causes (scientology).

The media places wayyyy too much emphasis on the opinions of celebrities.

Celebrities should not be "practicing medicine without a license". It could

have disasterous results. People with mental illnesses are often easily influenced, especially by celebrities, so celebrities should keep their comments to topics that they are actually qualified to speak about.

They need to stop feeding the egos of those people. There are more important things going on in the world that needs to be addressed.

If they are going to let him go on and on about his personal opinion about something he really is not qualified to talk about, then they need to have an expert on hand to state the facts.

While he is entitled to his views, I think that Lauer attempted to get him to explain the rational bases for his beliefs, something Tom failed to do. And Lauer did challenge his position that no one is helped by medications and psychiatry is all vedoo(?) science. The problem is that there will always be some who will cite his position. Does he need a psychiatrist? He couldn't lose if he had some help. :rotfl:

Grannynurse :balloons:

Not only did Tom not explain the rational basis for his beliefs (because there are none), he got defensive (because there are none) and practically had a hissy fit .

He needs to go to med school and get a reality check !!! He is clueless.

I personally feel like celebrities are treated like gods in this country. It's ridiculous. The problem is that they have a world stage from which they can share their views and beliefs. I think that can be very dangerous. I think of the countless women who will be helped by someone like Brooke Shields coming forward and sharing her experience. Something positive will come from it. But I think what Tom Cruise is doing is very dangerous. Yes, they are just celebrities, but tell that to the people that require these medications to avoid a psychotic episode who hear this crap and decide that Tom's right and quit taking their meds. It's a slippery slope for sure. As the granddaughter of a paranoid schizophrenic and the mother of a child with ADD, it seriously offends me. He has no clue!!

I agree Katy. There are people with symptoms of severe psychosis, depression, etc. What would happen if they decided to go off of their meds because they hear and believe that crap that Tom Cruise and others like him are saying.

The problem is that you don't understand the history of psychiatry, and he does! What on earth could medical school teach such a brilliant mind anyway?:rotfl:

Kelly Preston does not have a medical degree either, and she is no more(or less) qualified to be denouncing the practice and benefits of any medications.

There are side effects, and some are adverse, to ALL medications. The benefits must be weighed against the possible negative side effects.

The lives of people are placed in the hands of the physicians and other qualified health care professionals - not in the hands of celebrities or religious cult leaders/members -- for a good reason.

Uh... did you not notice the large yellow head laughing out loud? That would be an indication that what I said was in jest. I really thought that was obvious.
