Title of "BSN" on badge?

Published

Does the hospital where you are employed print "BSN" on your name badge if you have a bachelors in nursing? The hospital I am employed at will only print RN and not BSN...I know it sounds petty...However, if I am working my tail off for the BSN..I want it printed bc I want to be darn proud of that! They say they don't want to offend the other nurses or belittle them??? I say "you want the BSN..go get it! They pay for it all anyways!"

I work at a local hospital as an intern while I am finishing my RN training. I am getting them to pay for the ADN classes and will have them pick up the tab for BSN as well. They pay 100% for both degrees as long as you sign a contract with them. If the BSN program is good enough for them to pay 100% tuition costs..why isn't it good enough to print it on your name badge? Do they not want to promote BSN? I think it is total crap!

many do but some don't.besides its the RN thats important to pts. They really don't care about the educational level as long as they know you have the RN. Same as a clinical nurse specialist or APRN. they do put those on badges but many patients dont know what it means. In the ER or ICU most only care about living and who provides them relief from suffering and help. I am getting my BSN soon in an RN-BSN program. It doesn't matter tpoo much although like you I would like to wear the RN-BSN.

As an aside. Did you know that many of the hospitals in MA wouldn't allow any care giver to put any initials on their badge.

The state made it mandatory that a title be on a care givers badge.

Not necessarily BSN ADN etc but LPN RN and CNA.

The hospitals didn't want patients to know that they weren't being cared for by an RN.

EVERY PATIENT DESERVES AN RN.

Thats why here its RN-BSN. Its the RN that means you passed the board. The BSN just means we have a bachelors.WE are still RN, s when licensed anmd that is what they want to see.

yes a big difference in areas like complex care, hospice, pain management , forensics etc. Also a huge emphasis on the body, mind ,spirit, aspect. Each program is a little different.

Totally agree! Every other profession regards a bachelors as a sign of true education. Some RN's do resent us but it shouldn't be that way.Unfortunately i have had similar experiences to yours.Change is not always readily accepted.I for one will be proud to wear RN-BSN as well as CNS when i get my clinical nurse specialist cert. :nurse: :biere: :yeahthat:

Good topic! At the facility where I work, my name tag includes a picture (I look pretty scary!), my first name, Trauma and then RN, MSN, CEN. We can pretty much have what we want on it to a certain extent. RN's also have a huge red and white RN tag below our name badge too.

As an aside, I find that the public is more educated. I often have people ask me about my masters degree. It doesn't mean I give better care, just that I have more education.

A tough decision considering a BSN with 2 years experience would appear to be more knowledgeable than an ADN with 15 years of experience. On the job learning must count for something. If the additional medical training BSN's receive were critical to patient care, it would be addressed in the NCLEX-RN. I think the only remedy to define the two degree's would be to have two different licensing exams. That would remove the argument " I passed the same test he/she did." I don't know. Personally, I don't care what is on someones name tag as long as they are dedicated, professional and compassionate. I have detected a smidgen if insecurity on this thread, though.

yes, I agree in any advanced education in a specific field being applied to the badge. As far as a pay difference, that is also always in debate, but I agree with at least a buck difference per hour, if we want all others to respect further education in the nursing field, a little reward is not such a bad thing!

Just my opinion but we all know what a grind that nursing school can be so the BSN title is earned and should be displayed. I dont want to stir up the emotional, age old, tired BSN vs ADN debate either. But I am struggling through nursing school now (ADN program, semester 3 of 4) and if I should ever get my BSN I would want to wear it proudly. Sure many patients dont know or care what the letters behind RN mean, and maybe that the only letters that really matter to a client in need are RN. But when you are the one studying your tail off for those 3 letters, youve earned the right to display them. Just like I will be proud to wear RN on my name tag if/when I finish nursing school.

There is nothing to stop you from ordered embroidered scrubs with your name and credentials on it. I am a clinical educator and I wear a lab coat with my name, credentials and title on it. My badge is just like everyone elses....it has my first name and a large RN printed over the whole thing so the patients can clearly see that I am a nurse.

Oh dear, sorry, but I guess you haven't gone through menopause yet.

I could never wear a lab coat.. And personally I think a lab coat is more snutty than a badge.

I think this discussion started with staff nurses. No time for a lab coat.

I won't deny you wearing one if you like them.
