Title of "BSN" on badge?

Published

Does the hospital where you are employed print "BSN" on your name badge if you have a bachelors in nursing? The hospital I am employed at will only print RN and not BSN...I know it sounds petty...However, if I am working my tail off for the BSN..I want it printed bc I want to be darn proud of that! They say they don't want to offend the other nurses or belittle them??? I say "you want the BSN..go get it! They pay for it all anyways!"

I work at a local hospital as an intern while I am finishing my RN training. I am getting them to pay for the ADN classes and will have them pick up the tab for BSN as well. They pay 100% for both degrees as long as you sign a contract with them. If the BSN program is good enough for them to pay 100% tuition costs..why isn't it good enough to print it on your name badge? Do they not want to promote BSN? I think it is total crap!

I pretty much think it boils down to this:

And before anyone comments, I spent 20+ years working in a career where I was doing the work that others were doing, and I was excelling at it. But, I didn't have the right degree. So while I supervised them, hired them, and even fired them, I never had their earning power. I never had that door opening benefit of a couple of the right little letters behind the name. And everytime I started to resent those around me who had managed to get their sheepskin in the field for which they were employed, I reminded myself of the story behind the link above.

Oh, btw... Those letters don't mean anything other than the person displaying them spent x amount of time doing y amount of work. It doesn't promise skill. It doesn't imply wisdom. It just implies that a baseline of material was covered and the person with the letters was able to hold onto that info long enough to pass a test. And guess what. It wasn't easy. Whatever you think of them, they worked bloody hard to earn them. If the least that society can do to recognize their effort is to allow them to put a couple of letters behind their name, then so be it. They've got the sweat equity invested so they've earned it.

I completely agree that I earned every educational hurdle I crossed.

I just don't want to put it on my badge.

Personally, I just want RN there.

My Hopital pays 25 cents more for your BSN. RN BSN is placed on your ID. It really doesnt matter to me though. Ill have CRNA on my ID soon.

welllll, at my hospital...most folks with either their bsn or msn do have it on their name badges. it has become an accepted practice and part of the nursing culture here. there is no rubbing it in other's faces. it is just a professional acknowledgement of educational preparation...viewed with no different respect as folks having a rn,c or a rn,cs. it has never been a problem here. i doubt that it will be.

my badge--> (thunderwolf) rn msn

it is who i am.

A Canadian Perspective (my own humble opinion)

I'm a new grad and recently had this discussion with some of my friends... some who have diplomas and some who have a BSN. Starting in 2005 in Ontario, and some other provinces the entry to practice was changed to be a BSN. At my hospital the wage is slightly different, give or take about 1.25 for the BSN (i.e. 22 and change for diploma vs. 23.80 for BSN). Also, as a benefit of having my BSN I get an extra 39and change each paycheck. All of our badges say RN and the unit we work on...

It isn't about preparation, it is about the quality care you provide. I know some great nurses with a diploma and I know some nurses with there BSN who are just clueless.

Just my 2 cents...

Why not just live and let live? If you want all your titles on your badge, then do it. If you don't, then don't.

Nursing is not a monolith.

Very well said Linda! I couldn't agree more. I am a BSN and my hospital does not allow BSN on nametags. They used to, but families requested that the patients be cared for by a BSN instead of an ADN. Perhaps this should inspire more to go back to school!! The administration is sending the WRONG message here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Well if thats the case then the BSN, should have to take a harder test to be licensed!!!! I have my RN license and still have my LPN license, so maybe I should have RN,ADN, LPN, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and lets add CPR, and TB just for fun!!!!!!!!!!! I could care less if someone has BSN behind her name on her badge, but to say that a ADN should be motivated to go back to school because someone says the BSN can provide better patient care???? Whatever, I don't know if most of my coworkers are ADN's or BSN's, and I don't care either!!!!!!!!!!!!!:angryfire
