Hi I am from the Uk and have been reading this whole Nclex subject to get my head round the topic as I am due to qualify in Aug and am looking at moving over to the US after gaining 6-12 months experience first. It seems quite complex and naturally the differing language doesn't help so I need to become familiar with all the different terminology. What I don't understand is the "secrecy" thing about the actual questions, if there are such a range and you get anything up to 265 why is it nobody has actually specified any questions, are you banned from doing so? I certainly believe in repetition for me, that works well for me, but obviously planning in advance is good hence why I am lookign into it now. I am going to an exhibition on Monday where there will be a US Nursing agency so I can ask questions and maybe get things explained better but I know it's what I want to do, I have wanted to work in the US for some time now it's just getting the wheels in motion. Can you offer any advice on this? Many thanks. x
hello !
i hope these tips will help all those who are going to take the nclex.
1 - Know your basics and specially, know how and when you'll apply them.
2 - When studying "UNDERSTAND" and don't just memorize the topics.
3 - Take practice tests and gradually increase answering questions until you can do 300 to 365 questions in one sitting and if you want to time your session, do the 365 questions in 7 hours and 30 minutes.
4 - Pray! Pray! Pray! whatever your religious beliefs may be.
5 - Focus! Focus! Focus! about what the question is asking.
6 - Breathe! Breathe! Breathe! the brain needs oxygen to function properly.

Took Kaplan where you go to the class and only read their one book.
Where to focus--You will get questions like "You just get report which patient do you see first and then the choices some will only have lab values (so learn your labs) others will have different s/s. You want to choose the most critical and most unstable.
Questions like you work on a med surg floor and a nurse is floating from ob which pt do you assign them. You want to give them the easiest most stable patient.
I even had like 2 cane walking questions.
Take Kaplan and they will give you review strategies. Well worth the $500. Passed with 75 questions.
Best of luck.
Ben

(take note each poster I made had my name with the letters R.N. at the end) **I wrote my real name on my posters**
(DON'T FORGET PRAY! PRAY! PRAY!)
I posted this in front of the toilet bowl, behind the front door, behind the bathroom door, infront of the threadmill, by my closet, by the kitchen, by the computer, all over the house and I also brought one with me where ever I go.
Believe me I have all the other RN books saunders, kaplan, davis, Incredibly made easy, you name it I have it but they are too wordy, too heavy, and time consuming. I find them just collecting dust in the book shelf.
I used EXAM CRAM NCLEX RN and took it with me all the time. At work on my break time, at my moms house, friends house, at the park, & at the beach. A very handy book, small and very easy to understand (I'm a foreigner). I didn't want heavy and wordy books. The Exam Cram worked great for me.
I took the computer adaptive test that the book came with, and wrote down in my 79cent MEAD journal notebook the information that I got wrong. Boy did I fill that notebook. In this way I was able to focus studying more of my weaknesses. For me it was all in all an awesome technique. The brainwashing posters all over the house, the mini study book (Exam Cram NCLEX RN), the CAT cd it came with, oh and LOT'S & LOT'S of PRAYERS. It's all good!
Somebody else gave me this technique. It wasn't mine, but somehow it worked for my friend and for me as well. Try it, you never know, it might work for you to.
Good luck!

I started studying during my last semester in school. I used Kaplan, Lippincott and medspub -- plus a separate drug book. During the last two months before the test -- I would get on the computer and do 100 questions a day. The two things I found most helpful: First -- knowing the how and why, not just memorizing facts. Second -- practicing taking the test -- getting used to the way they word questions, learning how to eliminate answers etc.
The computer shut off at 75 and I was crushed. I thought for sure that I had failed terribly. I passed! Don't panic -- and keep the faith!
Faith in God and in self is the starting point of all achievements.... I passed NCLEX last October 2006. I studied for two whole wks and i read a lot of tips spc in this forum. Plus i did pray and ask guidance to our Almighty God every review session and during examination. Pray hard and study wisely
I bought a blue Kaplan book 2008 edition- its guarantees you a passing score or your money back!!!!
best of all --- it is only 25.00 at Books A Million!
The book I have is the NCLEX PN, however, i can provide the ISBN and you will be able to locate the same book RN edition.
ISBN-13: 978-1-4195-5273-1
the book includes 145 practice questions with answers, info needed about the questions topic and a reason why or why not the answer was chosen or eliminated. The questions are equal in difficulty as well as the way it is communicated through the exam. This book is written by the writers, all nurses, for the NCLEX.
I was studying this for 1 week prior to the exam, and am so glad I did. It made me look at the questions and wording so differently! I had previously been studying the CD-ROM " NCLEX made incredibly easy" I would have bombed if I had expected it to be that easy- if you are relying on the "made incredibly easy" series, please switch- you are not going to be properly prepared for the NCLEX if you don't.
