Those parents who believe everything their kids say

I get wanting to believe your kid, but I also know as a parent, that 99% of the time, you are NOT getting the full story.

I got an angry call from a mother of a first grader I saw yesterday, asking why I didn't call her yesterday to tell her that her snowflake had a fever. Apparently when she got picked up from her after school program at 6:00 pm (I saw her at 11:20 am) she had a fever of 103. I pull up my note from yesterday and say "because she did not have a fever yesterday. If she had a fever I would have sent her home". So mom says "She told me she came to see you yesterday and you told her she had a fever and sent her back to class". So I read her the end of my note out loud "Allowed student to sleep for 30 minutes and re-checked temp- 99.2. Student stated she feels better so sent her back to class". Mom was silent after that

Edited to add that I also made sure mom understands that a fever is anything over 100.4 at our school, in case she mistakenly thought the 99.2 was a fever.

Just be glad when they bring the complaint to you or the principal instead of facebook. Mom believes the kid's outrageous story (is it a lie? miscommunication? who knows) and then 56 people believe that and share their own complaints which aren't always based on facts. Meanwhile people in the know are biting their fingers because if they dispute it, it will be a privacy violation.

hate this^^^^^! I have a great principal who has no problems calling parents and requesting them to remove whatever has been posted on facebook - majority of the times the parents comply. The ones that don't comply are usually the ones that have a bad neighborhood reputation anyway and people know it.

A nurse at another elementary in our district got chewed out by a parent a few months ago. LD hurt their arm and told mom that my compadre took an x-ray. Injury was your run of the mill, nothing to worry about bonk. Mom was hot that she was neither told about the injury nor given the results of the x-ray.

I was pretty hot that she has an x-ray machine and I don't.

I had a mom call the principal and complain that we asked darling daughter TOO MANY QUESTIONS!!! I told mom that my psychic powers and crystal ball weren't working that morning (in my head.) I'd love to see mom go to a provided and get treated without anyone asking any questions. Allergies? nah, rather not know. Taking any other meds?, don't tell me, interactions who cares....Those pesky templates we have to fill out on the computer....N/A to everything!!!! Boy did my job just get easier!!!!

ROFL!!!!

Why would you need an x-ray machine when you can use your x-ray vision and mind reading powers?

I had a meeting with principal and parent many years ago, parent basically accused me of assaulting her 2nd grader. I asked mom one simple question - "Did your son tell you that he had a nosebleed and I was showing him how to properly pinch his nose to stop it?" She turned red and said, no - well, that makes sense. End of meeting. A simple e-mail or phone call would have been sufficient but everyone wants to go above and tattle these days.

Not only do parents believe anything a kids says, so does staff!! But he said he has Ebola, West Nile and a fever so it must be true!

Two school years ago, I one had a child fall from monkey bars, using his arms straight out in front of him to stop the fall. When I got to him, his arm was in an S shape. Ouch!!! So, I called dad and informed him that I needed him to come and pick him up immediately because his arm was broke (mind you I NEVER SAY THAT, I always say that I am not sure since I do not have x-ray vision, but this time I had no doubt!!!). So I had his arm stabilized, ice applied, etc. waited 20 mins (we live in a rural district but I know they only live about 10 mins at the most from the school). Dad still had not shown. I called dad again, no answer. Waited about 5 mins called again, no answer. So, I called his emergency contact (his grandma) told her the story of the fall and that I had contacted dad and he has failed to show. I notified her that I would be calling an ambulance as soon as we hung up because I can not let him sit in pain. She stated that she was on her way and would get a hold of dad to see what the hold up was.

Immediately my phone rings and it was dad, who was furious. He stated that he was leaving his house as we speak and wanted to know how I knew his arm was broke. I explained that when an arm is normally straight and now an S shape that was a huge indicator. When he arrived to pick him up 5 minutes later, dad yelled at me and told me his son's arm was not as broke as I thought it was...dad is a paramedic. I was stunned! There was no doubt in my mine that both the ulna and radius were broken.

I received a phone call the next day from the grandma, who apologized to me for her son's behavior and told me that yes both bones were broke and they were headed to surgery to repair them!!!

Dad has not even step foot in my office since! If I call him for his son being ill he sends the mom or grandma to pick, lol....

Good thing I don't believe everything they tell me or CPS would be at their door. I had a student last week with a huge cavity and abscess. I asked the student What the parents were doing for their tooth, I was told "nothing", then I asked if they had seen a dentist recently, I was told "no I've never seen a dentist". So I thought this sounded odd, but you never know. I called mom. Yes she's aware, child was given motrin before school. yes they had seen a dentist, child is on antibiotics with another appointment for a root canal next week. I asked the student about this, "oh I forgot", now this is a fourth grader old enough to a least be aware they had seen a dentist.

Prime example of school nursing:

We do preceision guesswork

based on unreliable data

provided by those of

questionable knowledge

If I went to my parents with something like that as a kid I would have gotten "uh huh", and nothing done. The nurse is the adult and not doubted unless there is reason to. Even as a kid my parents made it clear that I needed to learn to deal with things myself. It was MY behavior that was questioned and how I reacted/responded to things and solved problems.

Now everyones kid is perfect. It is the blame game. Schools now have designated "peanut tables" with a monitor for kids allergic to peanuts (even into MIDDLE SCHOOL) because of course, it can't be the childs fault if they mistakenly eat something they shouldn't have it is the school.

We've had a child be exposed to 2 allergens from our hot lunches this year. Both times the parent ordered the item their child is allergic to. It's so frustrating because our food director works so hard to keep the kids safe. She cares so much and has put so many policies in place, but if your kid is allergic to milk and you order them mac & cheese for lunch what are we supposed to do? The food ordering website has all ingredients listed. SO frustrating.
