This week, I have learned..... (8/1)

Nurses General Nursing

Published

This week, I have learned:

(Vacation edition!)

1. Absolutely nothing specifically related to nursing

2. It's hard to not judge unhealthy habits of people on vacation

3. I'm reaching a point in my nursing practice where I can frequently size up a person for their health issues

4. It sucks being handicapped with an unseen condition at an amusement park

5. I am NOT afraid to write a scathing hot review of a terrible hotel

6. Simply being within viewing distance of my kids' joy is the best part of a vacation, ever

7. If you have the option of "quick queue" at an amusement park when it's 100 degrees outside, just do it

8. If you touch me when it's this hot outside, I will want to punch you in the face (reread that with the properly deserved expletives)

9. I have a new favorite motto

That's all from me! What have you learned this week?

Specializes in critical care.

Cricket - as you can tell by the OP, anything goes. :) I hope that fracture gets better quickly!

Chaos - I hope you are able to find a neuroleptic that both works well and allows for a smooth and uneventful pregnancy!

Hmmm there was more I was going to respond to. I'll be back tomorrow.

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.
:(

Oh I forgot about your health issues.

(My cell phone corrected that to gelato issues.)

Yeah, my first pregnancy was hectic. I went off all my meds. It was bad so next time it will be planned & I can be on good meds during my pregnancy.

I've learned I probably need my tonsils out since I've had strep throat 6 times this year...

Thank you, me too. I couldn't find any medications that fully controlled my epilepsy during my pregnancy as well as Topamax.

Specializes in PACU, pre/postoperative, ortho.

1- Just as my coworkers warned me, that one anesthesiologist is gonna sign out the last pt from PACU for the day & go home pretty much as soon as the pt arrives from the OR. Still had an airway & sedated with less than ideal O2 sats. Thanks for the support doc!

2- That one of the hospitalists will randomly see some of her pts on the floor & will wait until later in the day to see others. Why not see everybody when you're there at one time? Gets confusing as to who has been seen & who hasn't (she'll put in orders from elsewhere in the hospital based on labs).

3- My eldest son is truly grown up (sigh, 22 yrs).

Specializes in A little of this, a little of that.

1. I hate learning new computer charting programs.

2. Credit card companies are pretty fast about canceling cards when wallet is stolen.

3. The day after canceling credit cards, hubby finds his wallet in the trash...it was a very stressful few days for him (due to packing out the house).

4. I am a nervous wreck about starting my new job in Labor and Delivery!!

Specializes in Reproductive & Public Health.

1. That working at Planned Parenthood is a mildly controversial career choice (okay, I already knew that. But it's been an interesting couple of weeks, to say the least).

2. That I am absolutely 100% thrilled with my job, and don't miss catching babies at all (although I do enjoy picking up some shifts on L&D as an RN).

3. I can install a new light fixture all by myself. I also learned that the previous owners of this house did a terrible job labeling their fuse box.

4. There is a level app for your phone! I just moved in and am hanging shelves, pictures etc etc. This little app has made me so so happy!

Specializes in Surgical, quality,management.

That attending a head of Unit meeting is an interesting experience. I was the only Nurse in the room that was not an executive. Reassuring that the medical teams of my organisation are perplexed by some of the same things I am. However if my experience of that evening was anything to go by nursing management can rest assured they are more professional than this lot!

Showing your improvement project to said HOU, CEO of the health service, executive director of the hospital etc. Means my business case for funding should sail through right? Not holding my breath.....

I have made a positive impression with the big wigs about other things as well, so much so my secondment has been extended by another 12 months on 2 provisos deliver a green belt project and start post grad study......

Specializes in Aged mental health.

Hrm... what have I learned today?

1.) How the El Nino is going to affect us this summer coming, and just how ikky the fire season is already and it's still winter. Sigh.

2.) That under different states in Australia, there can be differing legislation on refusal of treatment (including palliative care), both for competent and those who are incompetent and have an alternative decision maker for them.

3.) That Thai green curry is delicious, but tastes even better the next day.

4.) ...I unfortunately cannot lick my elbow. This will not stop me from trying though.

5.) That Powerpoint presentations are horrendous to complete. WHO MADE THESE?!

6.) That I am ridiculously nervous about presenting at a conference, but at least I am organised.

7.) That it's OK to want to change career directions, and it's OK that I'm going to miss where I work now (if I get the new job).

Thanks for the giggles everyone :)

1. I learned am not a good writer as I thought. Writing personal statements is not a joke. To be honest I feel dumb.

2. I need to thank my mom more often for being an amazing nurse. She's amazing.

3. Finding a competent Dr in Canada is a full time job.

That driving to Carmel and Monterey to "Meet the Parents" of the man who proposed to my daughter on a beach in Carmel on Thursday was just what I needed. . . . which was . . A break from real life.

An offer to stay with the family in a gorgeous beach house. Wine. Good food. Walks on the beach. Mentally healthy!

I also learned . . .returning to real life is hard.

Specializes in Cardiac and OR.

This is more along the lines of "What my son learned this week": That sending a txt that says, "Hey Momma, the lawnmower is out of gas, and there is no gas in the gas can, so I didn't cut the back yard, k?" Will get this reply: "Hey Kiddo, you know that blue thing in the driveway that has 4 wheels and an engine? Take the gas can, put it in said blue vehicle, go down the street and get 2.5 gallons of gas to put inside it. Return home and cut the damn grass, k??" Bless, teenagers...
