The abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood.  I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

Last night, Trump told a crowd in Pennsylvania that the Haitian people in Springfield, OH, who are here legally, must be deported. So he doesn't care if they are legal or illegal. Funny, though, he never talks about the need to deport the 176,000 Ukrainians who are here under the same parole program as the Haitians.

Why do you think that is?

Because the statement about the Haitians was dumb to say.  The Ukrainians have nothing to do with it.

And how do you plan to control people who enter illegally?  It's an awfully long border with not enough investment in staff of technology.  Why do you think the Republicans voted this down?

The Republicans voted it down in short because the bill did nothing to reduce the numbers coming.

The left-leaning American Immigration Council thought it was a bad bill for that reason and others.

When Ukraine funding was taken away from it, many Democrats turned against it.

The only reason the USA would need detention camps is because Trump or some other right wing authoritarian might want to round up millions of immigrants and deport them.  All that right wing authoritarian has to do is "other" the immigrants and convince some of the population that they are poisoning the blood of the country.  If they sufficiently demonize the others, lots of Americans will go along with all manner of cruelty.

Supporting a pathway to citizenship for people who arrived here as children is a popular position.

We all watched the GOP demonstrate that the border is too juicy as a compaign issue to actually pass legislation which would improve border security. We all also understand that Trump wants to project that political theater onto liberals, projection is a liar's favorite tool.

The chickens will be home to roost when the American people remind Trump that 1) he was fired once before after completely failing the leadership test of a pandemic, and 2) and people who attempt to overthrow our elected government are traitors who shouldn't be anywhere near that power again.

That's true even if you try to attach other troubled people, like Smollett, to Harris.  Or, maybe we should examine the character of the people in the inner circles of the two candidates, as if character actually matters to Trump voters.

Our immigration laws allow for the arrest, detention, and deportation of those who entered illegally.  A President who enforces those laws then couldn't be considered a authoritarian for doing so.  A "detention camp" isn't comparable to an internment camp like you keep implying.  The illegal immigrants have committed a crime.  Japanese and others in internment camps did not.

You're not on the wrong side of the issue because Trump demonizes immigrants.  It's because Joe Biden let millions in and in many places they are overwhelming communities and their resources.  In some instances committing crimes. In some instances committing crimes and being released to commit more.

In some cases being a nuisance.  My Obama-loving coworker doesn't care for (putting it mildly) Venezuelans approaching her car at a stoplight and knocking on her window because they want to wash her windshield for money.

How about those who came legally?  Now having to compete in line for resources and a pathway to stay.

What are you going to say when the next 9/11 happens because bad people were easily able to get here and stay?

It's the Joe Biden Welcome Mat Policy that purposely poured gasoline on the immigration dumpster fire.

:The mistake occurred in part because Oregon has allowed noncitizens to obtain driver's licenses since 2019, and the state's DMV automatically registers most people to vote when they obtain a license or ID. When DMV staff enter information in the computer system about someone applying for a driver's license or state ID, they can incorrectly choose an option in a drop-down menu that codes that person as having a U.S. passport or birth certificate when they actually provided a foreign passport or birth certificate, authorities said."

Per the article this mistake involves about 300 non-citizens not a huge number affecting outcome of most elections.

Popular vote: Biden 1,340,383 ;  Trump: 958,448

Percentage: Biden 56.45%;   Trump: 40.37%

Electoral Vote: 7;   0

Yep, a 300 vote difference wouldn't affect outcome.

And yet, border crossings are down.

Yes.  Because 1) Biden reacted to polls in an election year and did what he could have done a few years ago.  A little too late to stop the millions his welcome mat policy let in.

2)They always go down in Summer due to extreme heat and humidity.

It's not Biden's fault that Trump demonized immigrants.  Don't be silly.

We already discussed Trump's ridiculous plans to round up millions of immigrants and detaining them in camps until they can be deported.  It's notable that you want us to do this because we should be scared of another 9/11 while we're supposed to elevate the guy who gave us January 6th.

I don't see how it's wrong to deport those who arrived illegally.

Even if he fails at his grand deportation plan, he'll at least shore up the border and drastically cut new arrivals.  In comparison to Harris or any other Democrat I can think, I'll take it.

I know as someone who favors decriminalizing illegal immigration and amnesty, you hold the opposite view.

I am much more fearful of mass acts of terrorism due to Biden's lax border policy than I am of Trump's "threat to democracy."  I bet you may be as well if you were to share your honest opinion.

So decrease in border crossings is a bad thing?  I'm so confused.
