QuoteThe abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.
The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood. I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.
QuoteBeryl made landfall near the coastal town of Matagorda, Texas, on Monday morning, packing maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (129 kph) and posing problems for the heart of the country's energy sector.
QuoteMore than 2.7 million homes and business in Texas were without power on Monday afternoon, according to PowerOutage.us.
CenterPoint Energy, which provides power to the southern and eastern parts of the state, had 2.2 million customers without electricity, the company said, warning that outages may last for several days.
Hopefully it won't be too hot the next few days while people have no power. It looks like regional oil supply won't be adversely affected.

QuoteA New York federal judge is poised to dismiss Rudy Giuliani's bankruptcy case, expressing concern Wednesday that Giuliani has used the proceedings to obfuscate his assets and delay paying a massive defamation penalty to two Georgia election workers.
"I'm leaning toward dismissal, frankly, because I am concerned that the past is prologue,” U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane said during a tense hearing, raising concerns that "the difficulties that we've encountered in this case in terms of transparency will continue and dog the case.”
QuoteA dismissal of his bankruptcy case, their attorney argued, would require Giuliani to liquidate his assets — which include two multimillion-dollar homes — and immediately begin paying off his debts, including to them.
It has been bad for so many attorneys to work for Trump. Or maybe Trump just attracts dishonest and corrupt attorneys.

QuoteThe fence, which began rising four years ago, has separated wildlife from water sources and disrupted their migration patterns, say locals who are trying to permanently block its construction. They say they have watched deer and elk running in a panic, looking for a place to cross. The fence's wire squares get smaller as the fence nears the ground, narrowing to 3.5-inch openings that make it difficult for small animals to squeeze through.

What did you all think about the big Russian bot farm on Twitter that was shut down the other day?
Russian propaganda targets American conservatives with their fabrications and speculations.
QuotePro-Russia social media accounts amplifying stories about divisive political topics such as immigration and campus protests over the war in Gaza.
Sham news sites spoofing real publications or posing as legitimate-sounding outlets with names like D.C. Weekly, the Boston Times and Election Watch.
Russian propaganda is ramping up in a busy global election year, targeting American voters as well as elections in Europe and the Paris Olympics, according to intelligence officials, internet researchers and tech companies.
"Russia remains the most active foreign threat to our elections,” Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines told senators last month at a briefing about election risks.
Russia propaganda is a threat because so many gullible Americans want to believe it.

QuoteThe files exposed a Kremlin-linked campaign in which "political strategists and trolls have written thousands of fabricated news articles, social media posts and comments that promote American isolationism, stir fear over the United States' border security and attempt to amplify U.S. economic and racial tensions," the Post reported.
QuoteIn interviews with U.S. media, two influential Republicans said they believe the propaganda has influenced their base and some of their colleagues.
"It is absolutely true. We see, directly coming from Russia, attempts to mask communications that are anti-Ukraine and pro-Russia messages, some of which we even hear being uttered on the House floor," House Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Turner said in an interview with CNN.
In an interview with the U.S. news website Puck, Michael McCaul, head of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said, "Russian propaganda has made its way into the U.S., unfortunately, and it's infected a good chunk of my party's base."
We've even seen and heard republican politicians repeat Russian propaganda in congressional hearings and speeches in the last few years. It's almost like the GOP created an environment where people were conditioned to believe things without evidence and then Russia took advantage of that planned gullibility.

https://baynews9.com/fl/tampa/news/2024/07/08/desantis-vetoes-water-contamination-reporting-bill
QuoteHouse Bill 165, also known as the Safe Waterways Act, was one of roughly a dozen bills that DeSantis ultimately axed following the 2024 legislative session.
The purpose of the bill was to create a statewide process managed by the Department of Health to issue closures and send warnings if bacteria levels in waterways reached unsafe amounts. It would also require that warning signs be put up and closures to be put into place within 24 hours of the issue being known
QuoteIn a letter explaining his reasoning for the veto, DeSantis stated the bill suffered a "fatal infirmity".
"Health Departments like DOH can serve a valuable function, but they should not be vested with the power to supersede local jurisdictions regarding the operation of beaches. I have made water quality and protecting Florida's natural resources a priority, and my administration will continue to do so, but this grant of power to DOH over Florida beaches is ill-advised,” he wrote.
QuoteThe bill had bipartisan support and was voted on unanimously by both the Florida Senate and House.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduces articles of impeachment for Alito, Thomas
Quote...The unchecked corruption crisis on the Supreme Court has now spiraled into a Constitutional crisis threatening American democracy writ large," Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement. "Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito's pattern of refusal to recuse from consequential matters before the court in which they hold widely documented financial and personal entanglements constitutes a grave threat to American rule of law, the integrity of our democracy, and one of the clearest cases for which the tool of impeachment was designed."
Any chance this will go forward?

Probably not but it's a first step to increasing awareness that a couple of our SCOTUS justices don't seem to be able to figure out what bribery or corruption include in the minds of we the people. We need to get over the notion that these appointments are untouchable lifetime positions even when the justices are misbehaving. Or when they can't understand directions or rules for them while interpreting rules for us.
Crusades said:Most being the majority of conservatives do not appreciate or like far right extremist. They don't hold the same values. Not to mention that every time some extreemist does something it gets put on all conservatives.
It's obvious you think that most conservatives are far right extreemist and apply the fallacy of guilt by association. So that conversation with you is pointless.
What is your definition to "anti LGBTQ"? What is it that the republican party done to lgbtq that has got you in a tissy?
Again. The concern is for ILLEGAL immigrants. Not legal immigrants. You purposly leave that out again. Fallacy of omission renering a conversation pointless.
Having books that contain inappropriate content out of schools is not "banning books". They can be obtained in libraries or purchased. The effort to associate this with the banned book in history is old and is a logical fallacy.
People can personally not accept election results if they want to. They can also believe what they want too. It is still a free country for now. That is not extremist. There were thousands of protesters that were mostly peacful during Jan.6 , they are not extreemist.
Kind of like how you and a few democrats believe Biden is in perfect cognitive condition despite the evidence of your own eye sight and in contrast to several democrats who also feel Biden has a cognitive deficit. Is that extremist? I'd say so. Guess what? You can believe that if you want to. It's not against the law.
Most Republicans support Trump, who is an incompetent right wing extremist. That alone contradicts your contention that most conservatives don't like or appreciate a right wing extremist. Are you just making stuff up because it sounds good?
Republican conservative voters are supporting right wing extremist policy and people and have a right wing extremist candidate for the presidency. They joined forces with white nationalists, white supremacists, anarchists and neo-Nazis groups to vote for Trump on 2016 and 2020.
I'm just going to laugh at your pearl clutching over those poor poor conservatives who you don't think have done anything to the LGBTQ community. While you share some of their hateful beliefs right here before pivoting to that victim stance, I'm going to just laugh robustly at you.
What is your paragraph rant about illegal immigrants supposed to mean except that you don't read carefully or you don't comprehend what you are reading?
You aren't going to be able to redefine what a book ban is and it's telling that you think you should try to justify and normalize the practice of banning books. You probably haven't read Fahrenheit 451 either.
Sure people can believe whatever crazy or un-American thing they want to. Unfortunately, voters like yourself plan to vote for some of these people who are believing these crazy things and they say them in interviews on television as if it's normal and expected that politicians will say and believe things which should be disqualifying. Trump is the perfect example of that crazy person who believes and says and even does crazy, un-American things, and millions of people will just vote for him anyway. Crazy and corrupt is the new conservatism in republican politics in the era of Trump. Just consider some of the people that MAGA has voted into congress and state offices since Trump took the helm of the GOP.
Oh... now you say that I contend that Biden is in "perfect cognitive condition". Gosh I don't remember anyone here saying that and you carefully avoided using any names of elected democrats who have said that. That most likely means that you made that up. You maybe feel like that's an easier argument for you to oppose, that Biden's in "perfect cognitive condition". I think, that in order to argue against that idea or belief you'll have to go find those people you were talking about who said it believe that and argue it with them. You may also assign some weird belief about the meaning of the word "extremist" to others but most others won't accept your definition, preferring the standard meaning to fabricated meaning.
My guess is that you don't really want me to list some of the extremist features or beliefs found in Trump and MAGA ideology to help you understand what extremism really includes. So, I'll let your confusion persist without trying to help you comprehend.
