The abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood.  I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

So, Tweety, what are you hearing/seeing/reading locally about Alligator Alcatraz, aka the migrant concentration canp in the Everglades?

Not much.  Remember it's Florida that's a red state that went for Trump and it's in an area where there are lots of Cubans and 70% of them voted for Trump.  I've heard some snippets about protests but mostly on national news.  Locals don't seem to notice.  There was town hall meeting in South Florida to talk about immigration policies here in Florida and only three people showed up.  You're unlikely to see California-style protests here.

Thanks for answering. When I heard about the camp, I was reminded of stories I'd read about German civilians living near the death camps under the nazi regime.. Many claimed that they had no idea of what was going on in those camps. An object lesson, I think, of what could happen when the populace refuses to look over there. Here's hoping we don't repeat that history. A Viet Nam era bumper sticker: Not In My Name!

The Florida GOP is selling Alligator Alcatraz merch.

With detentions rising they need the space and DeSantis pledged months ago to be supportive of Trump's mass deportations.  Trump and Noem are visiting later this week I believe, so most likely there will be some protests around that.

Like a lot of liberals I'm against open borders and support deportation of illegal immigrants.  After all Obama and Biden deported millions and we said nothing (mostly but there were criticisms).  However, with the caveat that they be treated humanely because they are still human beings and we are a civilized society.

I'm totally against stripping people with legal status, born here and children of illegal immigrants being treated like they are criminals to be deported.

Even for undocumented immigrants, the camp as described seems like overkill for a misdemeanor.

consistent with the regime's approach to due process.

Speaking of alligators, when I heard about this camp I remembered hearing a story about slave children being used as alligator bait. The story is considered apocryphal and seems to be part of the historical white campaign against non-Europeans. Snopes has a great explainer on the history of the alligator bait stereotype. GMTA, I guess.

Senate Republicans' "one big beautiful bill" would reduce incomes for low-earning households and raise incomes for wealthier households, according to a Yale Budget Lab report.

The GOP is trying to get the legislation to President Donald Trump by July 4.

The legislation would hurt low earners largely by slashing spending for Medicaid and SNAP, while a series of tax cuts would accrue mostly to wealthier households, according to reports.

I understand that conservatives want to cut spending and that for many taxation is taking away their money.  I also understand the idea of reducing waste, abuse and fraud and making people work instead of giving them handouts.

I would also think there would be a little more resistance from even conservatives that something just isn't right about these trillion dollar tax cuts to the wealthy.

On the other hand sometimes the wealthy do benefit others.  Bezo's wedding brought in a billion dollars to the economy of Venice supposedly.

The benefits will trickle down to the working poor at some point.  That's the GOP narrative, right? And that debt will magically disappear, like COVID did.

I'm sure that concentration camp will be inexpensive to run, will invite oversight visits, and has a robust plan for evacuation in event of an emergency.  Of course, that was sarcasm. Team Trump is sloppy and well known for half baked concepts of plans.

To no one's surprise, the bill made it through the Senate.

Do you believe that hundreds of men and women are standing by to be guards at Alligator Alley?  I surely don't and if there were such people, they'd all be very desperate people like illegals.  What will the state of Florida do with this enormous prison if they deported every single illegal?  I think they would start legal immigrants so it would simply rot in the sun and become a toxic eyesore.  I saw people protesting in the blazing sun against it.  Call it what it is...a concentration camp but the majority  Floridians are OK with that?
