The abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood.  I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

I think this is all very fascinating.

I've always thought that it's an oversimplification when it's said that whatever cost "will be passed on to the customer".  Products and services are already charged the most of what the seller think they can to make the maximum profit.  That price they can get also effects how much they decide to produce.  So, often an extra tariffs or supply costs can't simply be passed on.

We're talking about 25% here.  So, hard to imagine that won't effect both production (therefore supply) and sales, and it seems like will also drive up costs of used cars like during covid.  Trump of course does understand this.  I don't think anyone on either side of the coin wants these tariffs.  So, we shall see what happens.

I think currently tariffs are mostly passed on to consumers which is where some of the hysteria might come from.  There is also a lot of analysis that costs are going up from the tariffs.

But it does remain to be seen if companies are willing to raise prices 25% or absorb some of the costs to stay competitive.  At the end of the day supply and demand is what matters.  We see that with eggs and gas.  If there still is a high demand for products then they might be willing to pass the cost of tarrifs on.  It demand is low and they can still remain profitable they may not pass on the the total 25% cost just to maintain sales.

We are also seeing a stockpiling of supplies prior to tariffs so we might not see effect right away.

Like you said, time will tell.  Tariffs have some ups and downs to them some positive and some negative.

Canada has frozen all rebate payments for Tesla and banned the electric-vehicle maker from future EV rebate programs, Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland said on Tuesday.

No rebate payments will be made until each claim is individually investigated and determined to be valid, Freeland said in an emailed statement shared by her office.

The Star reported earlier this month that Tesla filed an extraordinary number of EV rebate claims in the final days of the program in January, with a single Tesla dealership in Quebec City claiming nearly $20 million in public subsidies by documenting more than 4,000 electric vehicle sales over a single weekend.

Musk was caught lying about car sales to collect a rebate in Canada.  He's a fraudster and liar.

Twenty-three states sue Trump administration over decision to rescind billions in health funding

Quote

A group of Democratic-led states have sued the Trump administration over its decision to cut $11bn in federal funds that they were allocated during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the lawsuit, attorneys general and governors from 23 states and the District of Columbia argue that Department of Health and Human Services lacks the authority to unilaterally claw back funding the states had already built health programs around.

The "sudden and reckless cuts violate federal law, jeopardize public health, and will have devastating consequences for communities nationwide,” the lawsuit writes.

The lawsuit asks the court to immediately stop the Trump administration from rescinding the money, which was allocated by Congress during the pandemic and mostly used for Covid-related efforts such as testing and vaccination, Associated Press reports.

One has to wonder why only some states are pushing back on this.  They use this money to track and control spread of infectious diseases like measles.

The slash in funding was the latest wave of cuts to be overseen by new Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The department said the funds were largely used for COVID-19 testing, vaccination, and other responses to the pandemic in announcing the termination of the grants last week.

Trump's expanded base and key issues

Trump's job approval rating (47%) and personal favorable rating (46%), along with the 44% who believe the country is on the right track, are at all-time highs in NBC News polling during his political career.

But they are also far below where previous presidents stood during the "honeymoon period" of new administrations, marking the polarization that has defined the Trump years. Slightly more disapprove of Trump's job performance (51%) and view him personally negatively (49%), and 54% see the country as on the wrong track.

Underscoring the deep partisan divide, Trump has the largest gap of any president in the last 80 years between his approval rating among members of his own party (90%) and his approval rating from the opposing party (4%), according to an analysis of three decades of NBC News polling and earlier data from Gallup.

Among independents, 30% approve and 67% disapprove of Trump's performance in office. A large gender gap still persists, with men approving of Trump's job performance 55%-43%, while women split the other way, 40%-58%....

Not a big surprise but it sure did get a lot of attention as the most expensive race for a judge in US history.

Dane County Judge Susan Crawford won a seat on the Wisconsin State Supreme Court on Tuesday — maintaining the court's liberal-leaning majority and dealing a blow to Republicans.

In a hotly contested race that drew more than $90 million in spending, Crawford beat former Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel by roughly 10 points — on par with a similar Democratic-backed victory that flipped the court just two years ago.
