The abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood.  I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

Philadelphia Electric (PECO)/Exelon has  mini-substation at bottom of my street. They have subcontractor Aspuldh trim trees along electric lines in my area 2x year. Last Thursday, saw them removing brush across street from substation while in November PECO had crews removing brush/fallen leaves, trimmed trees at major substation 1 mile away and replaced electric lines. This type work well documented in my yearly stockholder report -- been that way since 1970's when my Dad and his brother electric lineman worked for them.  Thought all power companies operated that way to reduce liability?

GVEA is the coop which manages the electric lines and infrastructure in my neck of the woods.  They hire crews to trim trees in the power line right off way.  The customers pay for that in our fees.

They are responsible.  They also have to follow local regulations and laws.  Some local jurisdictions have catered to environmental groups and have made the utility companies job more difficult.

Regardless of difficulty, it remains their job to maintain those powerlines, right?

I can understand that California is the poster child for wokeness and perhaps go overboard on some issues when trying to protect the environment.  If you don't like woke then California can be the punching bag.

They are used to fires though and have a good system to manage them but there's not a fire system in the country that would have handled such dry air and heavy winds.  No need to kick them when they are down, lie about it and promote the narrative DEI kills.

Speaking of trees around here trees are protected and trimmed around all the power lines.  Some neighborhoods are a canopy of trees in a hurricane prone state.   The last hurricane many of them fell onto power lines.  Three months later one huge one is in my neighbors yard because the city came and removed what was in the road and put back up the electrical pole it knocked down and repaired the wiring but left the roots and a a huge chunk of the base in the neighbor's yard because it's on his property.  Insurance won't remove it as it fell away from the house.  It will cost thousands to remove it and so far three months later it's still in his yard.  It's huge.

One of my coworkers begged to have a tree cut down and was told no because it was a protected tree and it fell down into his child's bedroom during the last hurricane.  Florida is too woke.  Damn the trees, cut them down.

Interesting that a man Trump called DeSanctimonious is now jumping ahead to support Trump and Trump is endorsing that.  But not all Florida republicans are happy about being called to special session.

President-elect Donald Trump is backing Gov. Ron DeSantis' decision to call state lawmakers back to Tallahassee later this month for a special session to ensure state and local law enforcement officials are helping enforce Trump's immigration agenda.

PG and E is not a public utility.  It is an investor owned corporation.  What a country!

I think history shows when we let utility and other companies do what they want to the environment they pollute. We have cleaner air and water because of regulation.

I guess there should be a balance between extremism and a healthy environment.

As the Justice Department said in its petition asking the justices to hear this case, the PSTF currently requires insurers to cover "more than 50 preventive services,” including "screenings to detect lung, cervical, and colorectal cancer; screenings to detect diabetes; statin medications to reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes; medications to prevent HIV; physical therapy for older adults to prevent falls; and eye ointment for newborns to prevent blindness-causing infections.”

If the PSTF falls, insurers will be able to deny coverage for these treatments. And employers will potentially be able to offer health plans that don't cover them.

This is reminiscent of that silly case that the SCOTUS  used to overturn Roe.

"The Justice Department, in other words, has strong legal arguments against the two lower courts' positions in this case. Whether that will be enough to persuade a GOP-controlled Court, however, remains to be seen."

They make the claim and then buy the marketing and advertising to convince the people that they aren't being fleeced.  It's very American.

Cecile Richards has passed away.

"Together, we have made real progress in this country, expanding access to services and making reproductive rights a central priority of our nation's health care system,” Richards said in January 2018 when she announced she was stepping down. "I'm deeply proud of the progress we've made for the millions of people Planned Parenthood health centers serve across the country each year.”

She was one of my heroes, as was her mother, Ann Richards.

I read the article about her on NPR this morning.  It's sad that they felt the need to mention Trump several times rather than to focus on her.

I'm not feeling this.  Her challenges and how she dealt with him and conservatives is part of her legacy.  Would her death even be making headlines within him?  Defunding PP put them in the spotlight after many years of being out of the radar of public consciousness.

I think this was a poor editorial choice on the part of NPR, to include someone who has never demonstrated any concern about women's health or their rights about health care.

AP News was able to publish an obituary without mentioning that man. The CNN article I linked only mentioned him  twice, once because the announcement came the same day as inauguration, and because he signed a bill about funding.

I disagree that PP was out of public consciousness.
