This was interesting in the news today...

The abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood.  I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

I disagree that the country has shifted to the right.

I believe most of us are in the middle with a lean to the right or left.

This election was Trump haters vs those repuduating the hard left and their ideas of decriminalizing illegal immigration, over the top wokeness,  identity politics, green mandates, etc.

Yep, that's the way it worked.  I don't remember "decriminalizing illegal immigration" as a big Harris campaign promise, but the border was a big deal to a lot of Republicans.   But yes, people seemed to reject a lot of the left agenda.  I still think inflation was a big deal.

It is, and it's not just the swing states. Places like Illinois, New Jersey — they all saw swings to the right. But I don't know that that necessarily means that the country is getting more conservative, per se. I do think it has much more to do with the fact that people were really frustrated with the economy. It was a widespread situation. You know, the fact that there was that much movement in states where they weren't having advertising, they weren't having get out the vote operations like the swing states were, indicates that there was a massive macro frustration with the Biden administration and the economy and immigration that led the country to sort of roundly reject Kamala Harris as somebody who was seen as the incumbent.

Perhaps because Trump won over the middle class, particularly men, because of the economy, he will try to have a better legacy than that.

That really says more about the intellect of middle class men than anything else.  Trump is a rabid radical with no skill set.  MAGA's have taken over the party.  It doesn't even resemble conservatism anymore.  Trump makes real conservatives puke.

I think the popular vote says more.

Given the current climate, I would say there's zero chance that Trump won't have two years of total control of house and senate.

Democrats need a net gain of 4 seats to win the majority.

Where things stand in the 2024 election

Democrats have so far flipped 4 seats and are leading in 1 other of the 10 remaining Republican-held competitive seats.

Republicans have flipped 3 and are leading in 2 of the 10 remaining Democratic-held competitive seats.

If that all holds, Democrats would be +5 and Republicans +5 for a 0 net gain for either party.

That would mean, Republicans would keep the House with a 4-seat majority, which is their current margin.

A day after her husband's big election night win, Melania Trump took to social media to address the nation.

"The majority of Americans have entrusted us with this important responsibility,” Mrs Trump said.

"We will safeguard the heart of the republic – freedom,” she vowed, and urged Americans to rise above ideology for the sake of the country.

It was a brief message, but suggested a shift in how the former first lady will approach the role this second time around.

I guess safeguarding freedom is a better message that the election was fraudulent.

I never disliked her.

FEMA Employees Instructed to Skip Houses with Trump Signs

Wow. Sad.

I can only imagine the carnage from liberal's heads actually exploding if this had happened.

"Imagine President-elect Donald Trump carrying New York and California and sweeping New England and other blue states to rack up 520 votes in the Electoral College. "

I think now that she and Trump know what it's about we may see a more Presidential President and First Lady. Their legacy can be flipped.

Of course their talk of healing and bringing America together seems disingenuous.

Off topic. I got denied  any help from FEMA because I have insurance, even though my deductible is $6,000.  Once again, being middle class sucks.

Liberal heads have already exploded at their stunning defeat.  It's well established Trump and republicans increased their vote count all across the country.  That's enough to make my head explode.

As I've said before I try to stay grounded and not deal with "what if..." type situations.  But I understand the victory lap and rubbing salt into the wounds.

There's also been people calling us snowflakes, crybabies, making fun of our reaction.   I can take it.

On a side note I was talking to a physician friend who said he has lost physician friends and even been removed from committees.  I also think the reaction of some people has been strong.  One of my old friends I keep up with on Facebook was so extreme in his reaction to Harris losing, I deleted him.  I don't need that kind of negativity on my socials even from liberals.  But I also have to allow people to feel what they feel.

I saw a snippet on 60 minutes that my friend was watching and the people were saying mostly it was the economy.  They didn't like how Trump acts and what he says, but Harris was saddled with inflation that they put solely on the Biden administration and Harris couldn't shake that off.

And so it goes........

It'll never happen.  All of those states are better educated and wealthier.  NYC knows who Trump is.  That's why he and his family had to move to Florida.  The daily signal is conflating their glee in this case.
