hey friends, I had been contemplating working in the states since I graduated , left that thought alone when I got hired here right after graduating nursing school. Well now the thought has reoccured to me, kinda wanting a change, wanting to see more than my own country... a new start etc, Its not gonna be tomorrow or anything , I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on potential cities for a young'ish, single, med-surg workin RN :p

I think it would have to be the big city cuz I'm such a total city girl.... plus I'm a slave to public transportation for the time being , but I cannot stand being far away from a mall etc (yeah yeah how girly I know!) , there are so many things to consider, and I'm only in the first stages of even thinking about it really , but still if anyone has any definite "yeah thats a great place" or "heck no, dont go there" advice lemme know!

I'm a San Francisco-phile, but it's WAY too expensive unless you rob banks!

As much as I want to leave here (because I've been here almost all of my life), if you want to visit the US, Los Angeles/Orange County/San Diego -- any of them are the first places places to at least start, IMHO (and I've lived on the east coast, in the mid-west, and OK!).

Nurses' salaries are good here. The experience is good. (I've read on the board that west coast nurses are allowed to do more procedures than east coast nurses.)

The weather is terrific. (The polution isn't great, but I don't know of a US city, relatively large, which doesn't have pollution.) No snow in the cities, no humidity in the summer (although it was relatively humid here this summer).

You like concerts and theatre? You're going to go crazy here. We have it all. (It has to be the best place, second only to New York.)

Camping? In CA, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington state (not DC) -- we have the most beautiful land and convenient camping around. (I LOVED the year I spent living in Virginia, right next to DC, and St. Louis, MO, but, god, it was so FLAT! And there was no ocean!) We have Death Valley, the Rockies (Rocky Mountains), the huge and ancient redwoods, a drive up the coast (Hwy. 101) which is second to none, 21 (?) old Spanish missions to visit.

Los Angeles/Orange County/San Diego -- you can be at the beach in minutes and up in the mountains in less than 2 hours.

I want to spend at least a couple of years in Boston, and I want to visit New York, but I guess what I'm saying is that I'll always come back to CA. It's a good 'base', there's a lot to do, and it's just so beautiful.

However, we're probably all baised as to where we live. ;)

Third vote for Philly....we've really cleaned up downtown so it sparkles. PLenty of facilites to choose from also suburban areas. AND we have Malls a plenty.

Minneapolis is very nice. Lots of diversity, culture, SNOW, and JOBS!!!!!

And you say you like the mall...........well Mall of America is right here!!!!!!! What more could a girl want?

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a cheesesteak??

OMG...coronary on a bun.

Thinly sliced beef, grilled with onions, tons of cheese (there's debate about what kind of cheese to use, but around here they spread Cheez Whiz on it). Some people get a tomato type sauce on it too, but I think for a true Philly cheesesteak you don't put tomato sauce on it. Put it on a long roll; some like the soft roll, others like a rolll that's harder on the outside and soft on the inside.

There are two places in Philly that make great cheesesteaks; big rivalry there (Pat's v Geno's).

Karen: You can correct me if I'm wrong here...it's been a while since I have had a for real Philly cheesesteak (I'm hungry now just writing about them).

well this is what I think I'm gonna have to do then...come to each of the cities mentioned and have every one of you show me around your city (Under the false pretense of purely work related reasons!) this way I can meet all of you AND try to figure out where to move....

so thats whats gonna happen.. And so it is......

and adrie , silly, its part of my scheme to drag you along with me !

seriously though thanks for the input, I'll keep on badgering you all with questions when I try to make a short list of cities sometime in the new year!

We have LOTS of Canadians here!!! Our hospital knows very well the immigration stuff. They will move you down here for free, help you with the immigration stuff, being your sponsor, etc.
