Do prereqs "expire"?
At my school, all science pre-reqs -- Bio, Anatomy, Physiology, Chem for Health, Micro and Pharmocology -- must be 5 years or less. As for the rest of the prereqs, they had better not expire. I am locking into another AA in June. Good luck! Please let us know.

No holiday pay!!??
Good thing I'm not going into this for the money. Good grief, no wonder there's a nursing shortage!! Where I work we get 2 weeks vacation to start (up to 4 weeks after 10 years -- supervision and management get 5 weeks after 10 years); 14 paid holidays; and 2 weeks SL. (It has been that way for the almost 25 years I've been around. AND up until last July, you didn't even need any college to get the job!) Between 40 hours to 48 hours a week, it's time and a half. Anything over 48 hours is double time. Holidays are double time if you work them. Not to mention that I don't have to put up with any of the BS I'm gathering, from this board, that nurses do. Not to mention that I have great medical/dental/vision benefits AND a great retirement. Plus, after I retire, our retirement board pays most of our medical premiums, and our union pays most of our dental/vision premiums. Something is REALLY wrong here!! Because, God knows, nurses need to know A LOT MORE and work A LOT harder than I do! This board has been a great eye-opener. I always knew that I wasn't going to make $$ as a nurse. That was fine. But I had NO idea how bad, in so many different areas, nursing can be. (And, yes, I still have no doubt that I want to be a nurse.) For those of you who don't know, on Sunday 60 Minutes is doing a segment on the nursing shortage. I am sure not going to miss it!

If You're becoming a Nurse for the Money......
I live in southern California, and I understand that a nurse with a BSN makes about $48,000.00 a year to start. (However, there is no distinction as to where one is employed or in what field/specialty. I have reason to believe that a floor nurse in a hospital.) Since I make well over $48,000.00 a year I KNOW that that doesn't equate to $25.00 an hour. $48,000.00 a year isn't even the median income here. Plus, everything is so expensive here in southern California. I live in a studio apartment (my choice) in a great complex almost on the wrong side of the tracks in a very nice city -- and it runs me $800.00 a month. I don't think there's anything less expensive in all of Orange County, California. So if you think salaries are great here, you have to remember that the COL is commensurate. My only salvation is that I will have a good pension when I retire in a few years. I can live on it and bank most of the income from whatever nursing job I get. I have no desire to have a BMW. However, I did see a fire engine red Toyota convertible that I'd like. :chuckle
