The Trump Thread

Published

I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can.  My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.

He's not going away.

Haberman's book is out based on interviews.  I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting.  Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with.  LOL

Quote

“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

Me - I listen to a lot of audible books and indigenous TikTok's lately. Those Zaouli dancers! They make me see drag in a whole other light.

I read old fashioned books, play the guitar, harmonica and banjo (although the banjo is not a strong instrument for me). Sometimes I paint.  I'm not a consumer of TikTok unless someone sends me a funny thing.  I'm a sucker for laughing babies and music videos with the wrong words.

Have any of you read Trump's defense to the ballot challenge? It starts out making this argument;

Quote

The framers excluded the office of President from Section Three purposefully.
Section Three does not apply, because the presidency is not an office "under the
United States,” the president is not an "officer of the United States,” and President
Trump did not take an oath "to support the Constitution of the United States.”

Quote

President Trump did not engage in an insurrection: "engaged" does not
include "incite,” he did not have the "specific intent" to cause the riot and launch an
attack on the Capitol, and his speech was protected by the First Amendment.
Further, the events of January 6th were not an insurrection.

Trumps attorneys were not skilled enough to successfully argue his defense in front of the Colorado Supreme Court, maybe they'll have better luck in front of the SCOTUS. I sometimes listen to SCOTUS hearings, when audio is available for a case I'm interested in.  This will be a fascinating hearing.

Do you remember, in December of 2020, Trump apologists in states like AZ, GA, and MI were trying to get their ejecting results thrown out or changed to "stop the steal"? We should remember that in December Trump said on social media  "This is going to escalate dramatically. This is a very dangerous moment in our history. ... The fact that our country is being stolen. A coup is taking place in front of our eyes, and the public can't take this anymore."  That was around the same time that the AZ republican party twice tweeted that supporters should be willing to "die for something" or "give my life for this fight". They later deleted that thinking.  I wonder why.

December 18 was the first time that Trump invited his supporters to attend a rally in DC on January 6; "Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!". That makes it seem that he was assisting in the marketing for the events of 010621. Trump gave an impassioned speech that day and told his really attendees to leave that area and match to the Capitol.  Might any of that count as taking part in the events?

Trump's economic proposals may trigger a return of inflation. He wants to impose a 10% tax on all imports. This will likely trigger trade wars, hurting both consumers and exporters. And while he's at it, he's going to deport immigrants who provide a great deal of farm and construction labor. This will increase food and housing costs.

Way to go, Donnie!

With a substantial lead in the 2024 GOP presidential primary days before the Iowa caucuses, Trump has proposed imposing unprecedented new tariffs on trillions of dollars worth of imports and deportingundocumented workers on a vast scale. Both campaign pledges risk exacerbating the price spikes that have subsided over the last year, according to liberal and conservative economists alike, in addition to some estimates cited by the former president's own advisers. If he's elected, Trump could implement these policies at least in part without needing Congress to act.

Trump vows massive new tariffs if elected, risking global economic war

Trump's enormously disruptive policy proposals come as he appears likely to jettison the more cautious and establishment-friendly economic advisers that restrained his most nationalist and confrontational impulses during his first term. These advisers — such as former treasury secretary Steven T. Mnuchin — now find themselves either at war with Trump or receding from his inner circle, potentially empowering more fringe voices.

I've heard many influential conservatives,  including one that Trump seems to be close to, sound warnings about his tariffs.   If he's really considering it, hopefully he'll listen to various sides.

As for deportations causing inflation, that's either a joke or fear-mongering.  What kind of deportations is that analysis based on?

Logistically, it'd take his term just to track down and process the 4 million we know of who have come in since Biden took office.  Those 4 million going away, many who aren't working, isn't going to contribute to inflation.

After 7 years of observing Trump ignore warnings or recommendations, with costly ramifications, it's interesting that you think he might listen to various sides now.

Trump couldn't even track down the children that he separated from family members at the border.  He is, however, very likely to institute some draconian travel bans or establish some camps to house the people that he feels are poisoning our country.

"Draconian travel ban"?  What would thar look like?  Nevermind.  That's not really targeting the problem, anyway.  So, doubtful that's really in consideration.

The crisis is the millions flooding our border.

And, camps don't seen like a terrible idea.  We're finding out that sanctuary cities can't and/ or don't want to take care of these people.  We have folks living in cars here in Colorado.  Our Democrat mayor wants to build homeless camps.  What's wrong with a illegal alien and migrant camp?  Actually seems like a reasonable short term, partial solution.

Worked for the Jews, right? Camps certainly got that poisoning under control. The Japanese internment camps worked out well too. Good thinking.  Every authoritarian should be encouraged to put immigrants and others in camps as a way to solve problems.  What could go wrong.

How do you know many of the 4 million who have come in aren't working?

I said many aren't working.  I know from reading and listening to sanctuary city mayors complain that it takes at least a 6 months and often significantly longer to get a work permit.   And the situation is snowballing, so wait probably getting worse.  And, the greates influx of these folks have been in the last 1-2 years.  So, it's probably a large percentage who aren't.

And, the ones who are, likely lower wage workers.

These are workers we didn't have a four years ago.

If they all left, no effect on inflation.

Lots of them are probably held up by back logged courts.  Unfortunately, the SOTH said that more money for courts is not the answer and not to expect that.  They want less flow across the border.

I just listened to Trump's lawyers argue about his presidential immunity to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals.  Interesting.

In audio of the conversation obtained exclusively by Mediaite, Stone made threatening comments about the two lawmakers.

"It's time to do it,” Stone told Greco. "Let's go find Swalwell. It's time to do it. Then we'll see how brave the rest of them are. It's time to do it. It's either Nadler or Swalwell has to die before the election. They need to get the message. Let's go find Swalwell and get this over with. I'm just not putting up with this *** anymore.”

Trump surrounds himself with crazy people.
