The Trump Thread

Published

I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can.  My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.

He's not going away.

Haberman's book is out based on interviews.  I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting.  Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with.  LOL

Quote

“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

No, you don't have it quite right.  All the individual persons pages never disappeared.  They simply took away pages that them by a specific group.

I can make sense of it in that a person is a notable person regardless of their race,  so why group them by race.

Personally, it seems a little over the top.  But not that big of deal.  Except that it gives fodder to his critics who don't take the time to or don't care to understand.

Trump Revokes Security Clearances For Biden, Former VP Harris, And Hillary Clinton In Sweeping Memo

Quote

In a stunning move Friday, President Donald J. Trump issued a sweeping memorandum ordering the revocation of security clearances and access to classified information for more than a dozen high-profile individuals, including President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and a number of former intelligence and law enforcement officials.

.The directive, sent to all executive departments and agency heads, cites national interest concerns and directs officials to take "all additional action as necessary" to ensure that the named individuals no longer have access to classified materials or secure U.S. government facilities.

The individuals named in the memorandum include:

  • ・President Joseph R. Biden Jr.
  • ・Vice President Kamala Harris
  • ・Secretary of State Antony Blinken
  • ・National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan
  • ・Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco
  • ・New York Attorney General Letitia James
  •     Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg
  • ・Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
  • ・Former Rep. Liz Cheney
  • ・Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger
  • ・Fiona Hill (former National Security Council official)
  • ・Alexander Vindman (retired Army Lt. Colonel)
  • ・Attorney Mark Zaid
  • ・Attorney Norman Eisen
  • ・Prosecutor Andrew Weissmann

Have frequently watched most of the above persons on CNN and MSNBC discussing Presidents activities or suing him along with viewing their  substack/posts --Zaid and Eisman have current cases WON in Federal Court.

Revoking Security Clearances: How Bad Could It Get for Lawyers?

Quote

Washington lawyer Mark Zaid's security clearance gives him access to information, like whether a client works for the Central Intelligence Agency and what happened to the US intelligence officers he represents who are suffering from "Havana Syndrome.”

Zaid is one of a relatively small number of lawyers with "full" security clearances, he says, listed in databases with mysterious titles such as the Director of National Intelligence's "SCATTERED CASTLES" and "DISS" at the Defense Department. The status, which Zaid has had for 23 years, allows him to be quickly granted access to classified material impacting his clients.

Now Zaid is part of another select group of lawyers: Those whose security clearances President Donald Trump wants to revoke. He believes he's being retaliated against for representing a whistleblower whose claims led to Trump's first impeachment....

Security clearances do not "expire"; they remain active as long as the individual remains eligible and requires access per E.O. 12968

"I don't know when it was signed, because I didn't sign it,” Trump told reporters before leaving the White House on Friday evening.

The president made his comments when asked to respond to Judge James Boasberg's concerns in court on Friday that the proclamation was "signed in the dark" of night and that migrants were hurried onto planes.

The old guy is confused.  The White House tried to explain it away in a crazy statement.

I don't think it's Trump's critics who aren't taking the time to understand. They clearly don't care to understand, they are Trump apologists. You can tell by the fact that they continue to defend Trump's actions even after the actions are clearly identified as indefensible in some way.

Projection is simply an expected response by now, isn't it?

They didn't make it clear that they were in the process of revising their pages.  Apparently they just disappeared, said page was not available instead of something like "under construction and will be back up soon", which sparked speculation and they had to go on the defensive.  If the intention was to remove race but leave up the pages it was poorly executed.

I don't see anything wrong with lifting up a race and their contributions but I'll leave it at that.  I also don't think mentioning such firsts and contributions is DEI, it's history.

The first thing on Sandra Day O'Connor's government Supreme Court page talks about gender.  Are they going to take that down and merely talk about her professional contributions since she was a DEI hire?

There is zero chance that this administration in these early days would be consulting any of those people regarding things security briefings.  I'm sure they aren't bothered.   It's catty at best and looks like they might have something to hide at worst.

I'm starting to see sort of the broad outlines of this, but it's very difficult to understand, and even more so when you start combining the unpredictable, ego-driven personality of Elon Musk with entrenched Washington political culture, the federal bureaucracy, and the Donald Trump personality (MAGA) cult.  I would add that the overall "sane-washing" by people like Jake Tapper make it all the worse.

It seems to me these are starting to overlap in many ways, but often there isn't even shared terminology. I don't think the leader of one of our 3 branches of govt, Speaker Johnson, had the slightest idea what he was talking about when he made this (to me) astonishingly irresponsible statement:

Quote

Elon has cracked the code he is now inside the agencies he's created these algorithms that are constantly crawling through the data.

What we do know is Elon Musk's "algorithms" are an expression of his political views, not just some dispassionate word search, which really came to light with the DEI purge.  Apologize to everyone has seen this, but their memo went beyond" standard identifying works relating to ethnicity, but also used the words "first" and "history". If your mind is just devious enough I guess you can get creative and purge you for achieving something important.

So for the "so what they fixed it didn't they" crowd. The broader picture

Military was instructed to search keywords including 'first' and 'history' during rushed purge of Pentagon websites

So they must have had little worry about casting a wide net, especially since the "rush to comply" was not based on any sort impetus that some horrible thing might happen if they didn't.

Just to confuse things even further, I've seen in a couple of places that not only do they discuss "algorithms" in general overseen by Musk. He had already created a business software product called "Algorithm" 5 steps to rid your business of waste, fraud and abuse, which was a big hit apparently when this Inc article was written about it. Is he using that? I don't know and neither do any of the other Trump surrogates out there informing the public.

Awww. President Trumplethinskin really needs a personal apology or he may not be able to stop himself from punishing the people of the state.

Quote

"While the State of Maine has apologized for their Governor's strong, but totally incorrect, statement about men playing in women's sports while at the White House Governor's Conference, we have not heard from the Governor herself, and she is the one that matters in such cases,” he wrote early Saturday on Truth Social.

Quote

"Therefore, we need a full throated apology from the Governor herself, and a statement that she will never make such an unlawful challenge to the Federal Government again, before this case can be settled,” he continued. "I'm sure she will be able to do that quite easily.”

Quote

His most recent comments come just days after the Trump administration ruled Maine had violated the updated Title IX law. The state was given until March 27 to reverse its policy allowing transgender student athletes to participate in girls' and women's sports, or face action from the Justice Department.

"Any false claim by the UMaine can, and will, result in onerous and even potentially criminal financial liability,” the administration wrote in a press release. "UMaine's decision to side with sanity is a win for women and girls in Maine.”

"The choice for the rest of Maine is simple: protect equal opportunities for women, as required by law, or lose funding,” the USDA statement reads.

I suppose it might be fair to threaten loss of funding, which will bully, I mean set expectations for most federally dependent universities into compliance but the threat of "criminal financial liability" is a bit much.

I also wonder what he's referring to when he says "The State of Maine" has apologized.  Who is this and maybe he should publish the apology?
