I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can. My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.
He's not going away.
Haberman's book is out based on interviews. I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting. Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with. LOL
Quote“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

I have to wonder how it might have turned out for him had he acted like Pence and Biden and acknowledged he had the documents, handed them over and discussed it openly.. Instead he had to have a search warrant to find them and is now indicted. That narcissism is indeed dependable.

It seems pretty straightforward that political elected government officials are treated with deference when they unintentionally keep documents and cooperate with the agencies that seek their return.
Yes, there is a Trump tape which CNN obtained and posted--- the one noted in Trumps federal criminal indictment re the 2021 meeting in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he discusses holding secret documents he did not declassify.
Hear exclusive audio of Trump discussing classified documents in 2021
Tape illustrates key points, (needs to be verified for trial along with those attending meeting confirming observed classified document):
1. evidence of dissemination of classified info by Trump.
2. He knows it's classified at the time he disseminates it.
Since its now public, wonder if Trump will try to negotiate a plea deal.

It would be a rare moment for Trump to say he was guilty of something. So far his defense is that he was holding up newspaper clippings and magazine pages, right? https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-responds-alleged-recording-showing-off-secret-government/story?id=100213694
Do you think that a Trump plea agreement would include language about not holding public office ever again?

Doubt that condition is enforceable by a court. But, maybe you can cite a source that says it does?

There's a good bit of discussion about all of these legal possibilities and the opinions are mixed.

QuoteThat said, federal prosecutors often incorporate terms into plea agreements that would appear to go beyond the sentences prescribed by statute, ranging from commitments to provide victims restitution to waivers of certain rights to appeal. Arguably, these plea terms are not technically "punishments”; rather, they are the provisions of a unique type of contract or settlement agreement between the defendant and the federal government, in which the defendant agrees to these terms in exchange for the Justice Department's decision to forego certain charges or to endorse a more lenient punishment. Federal rules require that the terms of such plea agreements be approved by the presiding judge prior to sentencing, but otherwise such plea agreements have, as a matter of practice, included all sorts of conditions.
Notably, current Justice Department guidelines state that, even absent statutory provisions expressly providing for disqualification:
[r]esignation from office, withdrawal from candidacy for elective office, and forbearance from seeking or holding future public offices, remain appropriate and desirable objectives in plea negotiations with public officials who are charged with federal offenses that focus on abuse of the office(s) involved.
There would be a necessary review in the courts, but it looks like it's possible.
QuoteFormer President Donald Trump is asking a judge to delay setting a trial date in his classified documents case, citing the extraordinary nature of a prosecution that could happen during the 2024 presidential race and what his lawyers cast as complex legal issues.

He needs to drag this out as long as he can. If he thought he was innocent he would want the trial quickly.

Another topic about plea bargaining got me wondering if Trump would consider such a thing. He has a massive ego and delusional thinking and despite the evidence against him, I'm not so sure he would. But I do imagine his lawyers are discussing it.
