I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can. My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.
He's not going away.
Haberman's book is out based on interviews. I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting. Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with. LOL
Quote“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

You got to admire the hard work the researchers and reporter put into this article. Speaking about Trump in his press conference and they number from #1 to 162 his lies and distortions. From one press conference.
I don't care about things from the past you guys above are talking about, but as TMB says though "Trump, the expert liar, is very successful at convincing his cult of all manner of fabrications..." https://www.npr.org/2024/08/11/nx-s1-5070566/trump-news-conference

I'm not going to say he never lies. However, after reading the first 30 or so, many of these lies are opinions. They may not be proven true, but aren't proven false either.
This is what they led off with trying to show Trump is a liar: "I think our country right now is in the most dangerous position it's ever been in from an economic standpoint…”
They count when Trump says "she can't do an interview and is incompetent," as a lie, and point to the fact she has done interviews in the past. Give me a break.
And, the article itself exaggerates. Such as saying Trump often insults women of color. They say he did it 9 times in his speech. For one, he insults people of all races and gender. And, two, the nine times is the same women. By that kind if anslysis he has insulted rich white guys 1000's of times just counting Biden alone.
Most of the lie count articles on Trump over the years are garbage like this. You could pick apart almost any politicians speech in a similar manner.

So technically he was not exonerated because the process to do that did not happen.
Clever tho.
Trump days he was exonerated both in the Mueller investigation and in Cannon's dismissal of the documents case. He's a liar. He's not clever, he's a corrupt criminal and unfit for office.

Give me a break is right. Trump is a pathological liar, he can't help himself as lying is a feature of his mental illness. Republicans have simply normalized Trump's disqualifying dishonesty.
One could definitely pick apart any politician's speech in a similar manner but one definitely wouldn't find the same level of dishonesty and spin unless that politician is George Santos. From LBJ to Nixon to Bush, we've had some presidents who were expert at using lies to manipulate people. None were as eager to lie directly to the American People as Trump was during covid, IMV.
Trump is unfit for office. Unfortunately, his mental illness itself would never allow him to step aside just like it won't allow him to admit defeat in elections. He's convinced his voters that he isn't really a pathological liar and that he's not really a bully and loser, that he's a victim of cheating and a weaponized DOJ. Trump is expert at convincing his fan base of all manner of fabricated things.

The article obviously had an agenda and was full of nitpicks. I got that myself. It wasn't. an article of pure lies, but some distortions and misrepresentations. They could do the same to any politician.
Side note, Trump does seem to have an antagonizing relationship with women of color, both politicians and reporters calling them stupid, loser, and nasty to just name a few of the insults hurled at them. Good or bad, that's his reputation and they in turn are insulting back. Maybe it hits different when you're a rich white man calling a black female reporter nasty, a term he used he also called Harris when Biden appointed her his VP running mate, because the image of the "angry black woman" being used against them by a white man just hits harder than when you call a white man crazy (Sanders) or sleepy (Biden).
Before you say Trump is treated differently by the press, much of press have been fact checking the convention including CNN and PBS, and including the article you posted earlier. Mind you they don't stop to list 162 issues, but they do.
I also stand by my opinion that Trump is an expert liar. He seems to like to make things up without evidence or not caring that he will be fact checked. His base doesn't seem to care either.

QuoteThe highly overrated Jewish Governor of the Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, made a really bad and poorly delivered speech talking about freedom and fighting for Comrade Kamala Harris for President, yet she hates Israel and will do nothing but make its journey through the complexities of survival as difficult as possible, hoping in the end that it will fail. Judge only by her actions! Yet Shapiro, for strictly political reasons, refused to acknowledge that I am the best friend that Israel, and the Jewish people, ever had. I have done more for Israel than any President, and frankly, I have done more for Israel than any person, and it's not even close. Shapiro has done nothing for Israel, and never will. Comrade Kamala Harris, the Radical Left Marxist who stole the nomination from Crooked Joe, will do even less. Israel is in BIG trouble! Aug 22, 2024, 12:09 AM

QuoteThe Democrats staged the first ever "Coup" in America. Crooked Joe Biden was told, "Sorry Joe, you're losing to Trump, BIG, and you can't beat him - You're Fired.” So now, for the first time in American history, I'll have to beat TWO Candidates, the second being a Radical Left Marxist, Comrade Kamala Harris. It's not fair, perhaps even another form of Election Interference, but the good news is that she should be easier than to beat than Crooked Joe in that the USA will never allow itself to become a Communist Country. He's crazy. His deterioration is a very public spectacle. I'm currently listening to right wing AM radio while NEB gets her hairs cut. You can't believe the adjectives they are using to describe Harris's speech last night. Or maybe you would.

Looking at Federal campaign finance reports...paying "fair market values" to Trumps businesses.
Quote...With glitzy Mar-a-Lago fundraisers, stays at Trump's hotels, and flights on the former president's private jet, Republican candidates and political groups are on track to spend more on Trump's businesses this year than any year since 2016, according to a CNN analysis of federal campaign finance data.
Trump himself has been the biggest spender, both this year and over the last decade. Between his three presidential campaigns, Trump and associated political groups have funneled more than $28 million in campaign donations to his businesses – helping convert the enthusiasm of his political supporters into personal profit....
Some of the candidates who've spent the most money on Trump businesses in recent years have been new politicians who won the former president's endorsement despite a lack of past electoral experience or success, including Moreno, former Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker and Arizona Senate hopeful Kari Lake....
In the first half of 2024, federal campaigns and PACs have spent nearly $3.2 million on Trump businesses, more than 80% of which came from Trump's own campaign and associated groups. The biggest chunk – about $1.9 million – was spent by Trump's campaign and fundraising committees on a Trump-owned company that operates his jet.
In total, campaigns and committees have spent more than $1 million at Mar-a-Lago so far this year, and about $200,000 at other Trump hotels and resorts....
...But while political spending at Mar-a-Lago has attracted the most attention, the bulk of Trump's campaign payments to his own businesses has gone to a lower-profile firm. His campaign and associated committees have spent more than $14 million on air travel from TAG Air, Inc., which operates Trump's Boeing 757 jet – nicknamed "Trump Force One" – and other aircraft.
Trump's latest financial disclosure statement, which was released last week, show that he owns TAG Air through another LLC and a trust. The company is listed as being worth between $5 million and $25 million, and Trump reported earning $4.4 million in income from it. He also reported earning $56.9 million from Mar-a-Lago.

Tweety said:I can see the accusation that Biden was forced out of office since he was so defiant and then he wasn't. At the end of the day, he made a very coherent and willing resignation.
I also see the point about the Democrats Big Lie, but while I do think there was some cover up for Biden's decline, and they were backed into a corner after the debate particularly by 2/3rd of us that decided we wanted him out even if we voted for him the primary, the difference between Democrats and Republicans here, is that the Democrats made it right. Democrats while doing a complete about face at the disposal of Biden, admit they were wrong and that it's time to move forward. Also the Democrats that voted for Biden in the primary are not going to "stop the steal" and riot at Capitol.
I was reading an article in USA Today talking about Harris's socialist agenda, and the writer said "Trump is awful but he's better for the country than Harris". People like his leadership and what he did during his presidency, "even if he lies" as Crusades here said. I said at the time of his Presidency, he was throwing bones at the Republicans agenda (the tax cuts being the big one they wanted), they let him lie, bully and be Trump. Plus to cross him had a price to pay. Look at how "never Trumper" VP Pick Vance is now all kissy kissy with Trump. Trump is not a stupid man. He's pretty masterful at this manipulation of those around him (even if they go to jail) and his public.
Speaking of polls Harris is in the lead in some polls and the convention may help her there. Instead of worrying about how and why she's the candidate, and how we behaved towards Biden, republicans need to regroup and find a way to get their awful (my words, but also the words of a Republican) candidate back in the lead.
You can't claim they did something "right" when they have been lying about something right up to the point in which they could not any longer. The did what was "right" to retain power and it had nothing to do with virtue, morals or democracy. It's like trying to change your bet in the middle of a horse race because it's obvious your horse will loose.
I was willing to consider Harris however it's hard to know what her campaign policy is. Mostly celebrity and crowd hyping. She's been part of the current admin for 4 yrs and I'm not seeing what she will change? I know I was better off with Trump . Looks like that's where I'll take my vote. Simple as that.
