Why Jahi's Mother doesn't think she is dead:
Why Jahi McMath's Mom Is Sure Her Daughter Isn't Brain Dead - ABC News
Children's anesthesia questioned after two cases of severe brain damageMore about then 8 year old Rebecca Jimenez. This appalling case of gross negligence occurred at CHO in 2011.
This is the first I've heard of this case. I know in Jahi's case, she hemorrhaged which lead to cardiac arrest and hypoxia, but what part of the procedure are they saying caused the cerebral edema in this case? I completely agree she shouldn't have been discharged, I'm just curious about how she came to have the complications.

I read that article too, and couldn't help but be pretty horrified at what happened.
Why she had cerebral edema doesn't immediately seem 'connected' to her surgery, unless she had a deep hematoma interrupting circulation or a reaction to the anesthesia. Whatever the case . . . a perfectly lovely young life (not to mention that of her parents') was destroyed.
I read both of the articles linked recently and couldn't help but feel vaguely guilty for whatever negative thoughts I've had toward the McMaths et al. I started responding on this thread because I was shocked at the sometimes vicious commentary, and had no idea what caused it. It looks as though it began with CHO's public relations, and picked up eagerly by a substantial part of the public. The McMath's public behavior during and since has NOT helped. But their behavior during and since has never merited the extent of the personal attacks that continue, ie, black humor about Jahi's corpse and so forth. From nurses, yet. But then again, of course it would be nurses, more than anyone else, having been the ones to cope with such a difficult family which every single one of us can relate to.
This angle opening up, where this particular surgery has unacceptably high complication rates, has me more fascinated to hear the 'whole story' than ever. I hope we do, but I'm not expecting much.

If I had to offer a conjecture about the cerebral edema, I would guess severe and prolonged hypoglycemia, a cerebral bleed, prolonged hypotension intraop, or that the child was hypotensive and hypoxic due to respiratory depression from the IV narcotics given in the PACU and sustained a severe anoxic brain injury.
But their behavior during and since has never merited the extent of the personal attacks that continue,
When you cry poverty on gofundme, telling the world you need money to care for your precious baby girl, and then post photos of your lobster dinners and Michael Kors bags.....the backlash won't be pretty and you'll deserve every drop of it.

I don't personally remember piling on about that particular subject, but I cannot argue with the truth of your post.

We don't know if there was any negligence. These articles are all written from the family's point of view simply because HIPAA won't let the hospital tell it's side of the story. I don't think that its a surprise that we can't believe much of anything we read. I would wait until such time that CHO and the nurses and Drs that cared for these children get a chance to tell their side of the story before saying they were negligent.
They opened the door for public comment when they went public with their cause.
When they asked for money donations they opened themselves up for even more scrutiny.
You get the whole spectrum of comments.
Just because one is a nurse doesn't preclude one from having a dissenting opinion.
As long as it is on topic and following TOS- it's all fair.
I have said it before, I wish Jahi had never made the news.
I would like to have never heard of her and think that she could have just been able to be well and grow old with a life lived as she chose.

But it has nothing to do with anything BUT a family attempting to exploit all this media attention for financial gain. Seriously -- it is disgusting, I agree. But this is a family that lost a child for no good reason that we KNOW of for SURE. This particular surgery is showing a poor track record for complications, and Jahi is one of way too many morbidities. That's something.
Their indiscretion and entitlement to take donations doesn't render this family as deserving of anything except refusing to donate and speaking out in warning to others to not donate.
The authors of this article are Alice Dreger and Helen Haskell. Alice Dreger is a bioethicist and historian of medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. Helen Haskell founded Mothers Against Medical Errors following the death of her son during an elective surgery.

Many of us disagree with this because of the way that the scam fam is handling it. Good people-no matter how grief stricken they are-don't publicly beg for money "to take care of Jahi" then go online in public forums to show off MK bags and Ruth Chris dinners!
Good mothers do not allow their children to become morbidly obese and then refuse to follow Dr orders post op, then flog the hospital publicly without letting them have a chance to tell their story. Good mothers also do not leave 3 live children behind in Cali to move to NJ to care for a dead child. Those poor kids are all it takes to make most people despise her. The oldest daughter ended up with a baby of her own after the mom left, the son is now living with his dad (probably better off-but still needs his mother) and the youngest girl is living in an apartment now with her dead sister.
Decent people do not intentionally cause as much chaos as possible in a picu waiting room and publicly laugh about it and state on public forums that they don't care about how uncomfortable they are making other families.
Finally do some research on instagram and look at some of this woman's posts before this all happened. She only wanted to get drunk and kick butts...and the posts were truly awful!
The fraudulent claims and begging for money is only the tip of the iceburg. This family is the scum of the earth!

Oh, she had the option of telling the truth, like most people would do, and say "I'm an LVN" or "I'm a Practical Nurse" or "I'm a Licensed Practical Nurse" or even, as you suggested, "I'm a Nurse".
But no, she chose to lie outright, apparently to increase her weight/value on the subject, by saying "I'm a Registered Nurse".
Not an accident, unless she is going to now claim she suffers from a rare form of aphasia, in which she might on occasion substitute the title of one license for another, randomly....
