The First Days of Nursing School by the Fall 2009ers!!!

Nursing Students General Students

Alright well I have been wanting to post this for a very long time! Since I first logged on to allnurses I couldn't wait until it was my turn to say, I am a nursing student!!!

So, technically, yesterday was my first day but I was only there for a couple hours. We went right into lecture about the history of nursing and how it's ever changing. We also learned about the different educational paths a nurse can take, but I already did that research beforehand on allnurses :p

Today was mainly orientation and a welcome to our nursing class. We went more in depth about what to expect and also dissected our huge textbook-like syllabus. I am not joking about the size of that syllabus, it's insane. Since starting I have been reading nonstop. We have already been assigned about five chapters to read from our fundamentals book, which is not the most interesting of reads, but it's doable. I'm just overwhelmed really, probably because they talked a lot about what is to come. Over the next month, three papers are due and at the end of each semester we are taking the ATI tests. If we fail those, well then we have to take the course over.

Today was also one of our lab days. So for lab, we watched two videos about ensuring infection control by washing hands and applying ppe and then of course we had to do it. The basics for right now. Tomorrow is another lab day, bedmaking and body mechanics. So I guess I should get back to reading a couple more chapters and stop playing around on allnurses. I am just so happy to have finally made it. I'm still in a state of shock. Somebody pinch me.

Seriously, it's nursing school. If you don't have bigger things to worry about than musical chairs, I want to go to your school. It's the first week, and I'm already spending the majority of my time at Starbucks, trying to get a handle on the sheer load of things that need to be read and learned in preparation for next week. Don't worry about whether everyone else is social and accepting. You have stuff to do, stuff to learn. :)

Yesterday was my first day!! Whew, glad that is over with!! We basically went over our resource manual and our class syllabus for about five hours then the last hour, we practiced taking Blood pressures. All in all, it was realy a great day, it makes me excited for everything to come!!! Congrats to all you other class of 2011!! So excited!!!

im alittle late on studying ahead, my books arent arriving until next week... class starts on monday...

i want to start memorizing med terminology, anyone have a website that have med terms where i can start studying???

thanks in advance!!!

Yeah, I wish I had sat up further now. Although I could have been displaced by all this musical chairs business.

As long as your leg is not chained to the table, you can still move to a seat closer to the professor. Just grab another seat. I am going to move to a seat a bit closer to the rear just to escape the motor mouth beside me in p'cology. It's not only ok to make adjustments to improve your learning experience, it's your responsibility. We all make adjustments through life as they are needed. Just my :twocents:.

No, alas, it is not the only thing to worry about! There is so much stuff - I hope I can keep track of all the assignments and test dates and not miss something. The only reason I am worrying about it so much is that I have read on here that you cannot make it through nursing school without some close friends. Does not seem to be happening.

On the third day the instructors made a seating chart to help them keep track of attendance. If I move now, not only would I annoy the displaced student but also probably the instructors! Like I said, someone has to sit there and I am no better than anyone else to be able to move and make some other poor chump sit there.

To KAR38:

I feel for you because you're right, the program is overwhelming and we were told that no one else will understand the stress, etc. of the program except those who have been through or who are going through it now. Try to find a group that will let you join in. I would think someone would be nice enough to reach out to you once you make it known that you're alone right now. Good Luck! I hope you find a buddy!

I have my first skills check off tomorrow--hand washing and bed baths! I'm a little nervous, but we're going to do bed baths with a partner, so that will help.

I've been so insanely busy this past week it's unreal. I'm taking my LPN classes, plus micro, phys, and algebra (pre-reqs for the RN program). I'm having to relearn how to be organized. I'm using a planner for the first time in my life!

I've been busy, but being back in school is a blast!

Hi everyone!! It was such a relief when I found this discussion thread!! It's so exciting that we are all in this together!! I have my orientation next thursday, and I start classes on september 8th!! I know that most of you have already started your courses.. so tell me a little about it!! Any suggestions for my first day?! I am soo nervous but so excited.. ahh so many emotions all at once!!

Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Good luck to everyone.. we'll stick together and make it through!!!

Today marks the end of the third week and my goodness has it flown by. Being tested on bed making, to being tested on ROM, and now off to vitals. We're going to be tested on bed baths at our clinicals. There been so much reading and today was our first exam. It was such a relief to have it over with. This is probably going to be the easiest exam we'll ever have. lol. Our clinical orientation is in a little less than two weeks. Everything is just happening so fast. The best advice I have received so far and it's been repeated often, is to just take one day at a time. If you look at the big picture for too long, you will definitely be overwhelmed. Alright well good luck everyone. Have a good weekend!

I have to get a better stethoscope now because the one that I had that came with the toy anatomy man from Toys R' Us just ain't cutting it! LOL For practice vital signs tomorrow I'm using my mom's free one given to her by Kelsey-Seybold clinic. Believe it or not, it works very good, but I need my own. I'm not ready for the price and lust of a Littman. Isn't a Prestige good enough? They've had some good reviews. What has evryone else got?

I have a Littman Cardology III and I totally recommend it. Worth the expense. Just go for it. You'll have the steth forever! :wink2:

I hate the expense, too, but Littman rules. I am an older nursing student and absolutely cannot hear with anything else I've tried.
