I know every year someone posts a thread about the trials and tribulations of going to work in a snow storm. After 10 years in nursing I still dread the snow. Usually my hubby takes me to work and picks me up in snow storms. Now that we have a little one who is 1 year old those days are long gone. So now I have to decide on what I'm going to do this weekend when we are expected to get 8 to 10 inches Friday into Saturday. Do I book a hotel now close to work? Do I make arrangements the night before the storm to spend the night at work for my day shift the next day? Or do I just try my luck in the AM getting to work in one piece? Gah. My dream is to eventually convince hubby to move to an location where snow is rare or minimum. A girl can dream .

And when does this become available for sale? Cause I'd totally buy one.
I'm not really "essential personnel" these days, but unless either the county where I live, or the county where my office is, calls a snow emergency, I must go to work (or use PTO, but I am unable to yet, since I am still new to my job), even if my office closes. I have to go to our administrative offices, instead. In the winter, I always keep an eye on the weather, so I can plan accordingly, whether I stay with a friend or stay at a hotel (fortunately, several choices in proximity to my job). I always try to be prepared.
I was there this weekend. I live about 45 mins to an hour away but my hospital is in my hometown where my parents still live (the house I grew up in is 1.6 miles away and where my folks live now is 3 miles away) so I drove to their house on Friday evening. I could have stayed at the hospital but all they were providing was sleeping arrangements. No food or linens or nada. I opted to drive the harrowing 3 miles in whiteout conditions in favor of sleeping in my brothers super comfy bed (who is off at college) and eating moms home cooking.
I have a Honda CRV woth real time 4WD and it does great. The problem was not being able to see an inch in front of my face on Saturday morning. We also got "thundersnow" in the DC area.........listening to loud thunderclaps as I am shoveling my car out was super interesting LOL.
I ended up paying 400 dollars for a hotel for the weekend. I worked Sat and Sun. Short staffed and all. There is another storm coming later this week. I'm not coming. I'm tired of being the I w to plan ahead . I paid 400 dollars and only received a 10 gift car from managment in return. No thanks. If I get fired , so be it. I'm just so Fed up with management not Willing to reimburse us.
Ouch. That math definitely doesn't equal out. I wouldn't go the next time either, unless they are footing the bill, and pay it in advance.
This is not a "snow" thread. OP is requesting help with " how the hell do I get to work in an emergent situation."OP is considered essential personnel. It is up to the powers that be, to get the essential personnel on site.. safely.
Been there, did that.
You may be essential personnel but you're not invincible and you're not expendable.
Move to California! I live near San Francisco and only saw snow for the very first time when I was 25!
I am a northern girl and as much as we love to complain about the cold and the snow I really couldn't imagine living in a place without a winter. The whole "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas" thing...I somehow just can't imagine Christmas lights on a palm tree and no snow in sight.
