I know every year someone posts a thread about the trials and tribulations of going to work in a snow storm. After 10 years in nursing I still dread the snow. Usually my hubby takes me to work and picks me up in snow storms. Now that we have a little one who is 1 year old those days are long gone. So now I have to decide on what I'm going to do this weekend when we are expected to get 8 to 10 inches Friday into Saturday. Do I book a hotel now close to work? Do I make arrangements the night before the storm to spend the night at work for my day shift the next day? Or do I just try my luck in the AM getting to work in one piece? Gah. My dream is to eventually convince hubby to move to an location where snow is rare or minimum. A girl can dream .
I think I only got about five inches of snow and an inch or something of ice, and it was only Friday morning. It stopped by Friday afternoon and we've had clear skies since then.
The roads are STILL terrible. It's just amazing how incompetent NC is at clearing this awful white stuff out. I just got home from hanging out with the SO, and the roads are actually the worst they've been all weekend right now, because it got well above freezing yesterday, everything started to melt, and now it's re-frozen into a nice skating rink.
Fortunately, the main roads are all scraped at this point, but even the scraped roads have some significant ice still on them. The road I live off of is a giant white sheet of ice. I'm really surprised they haven't gotten to where I live yet - I live in the city limits right off a major highway, in a pretty big development, in one of top five biggest cities in the state. It's not like I'm in the middle of nowhere. I am very underwhelmed by the incompetence right now.
I ended up paying 400 dollars for a hotel for the weekend. I worked Sat and Sun. Short staffed and all. There is another storm coming later this week. I'm not coming. I'm tired of being the I w to plan ahead . I paid 400 dollars and only received a 10 gift car from managment in return. No thanks. If I get fired , so be it. I'm just so Fed up with management not Willing to reimburse us.
calivianya,
You are soooooo correct about NC being just the worse bout clearing the roads; I live in WNC, across the state from you (I think). The only funny thing about having a snowstorm over here is that once something is predicted, we get "The Salt Barn" stories on the local news. Every Single Time. I think the salt/sand mostly only goes to the interstate.
We don't have a 'skating rink', we have the godawfullest ice-ruts everywhere that try to grab your vehicle by the tires and fling it off the road. It apparently doesn't matter to the ruts which direction you want to go in, they decide FOR you!
But, there WILL be skating rinks tonight on the main roads, and especially at intersections where the storm drains are blocked...zzzssswwweeeee, there ya go!
My official total is 27 inches. Got my front walk shoveled, the neighbor (bless him!) did my driveway before I made it out of the house. Still have to deal with what the plow left behind, but I'm taking a break.
That's some awesome neighbor! I'm in northern NJ, we got about 30 inches. We've been in our new house for almost 6 months now (prior to the move to the 'burbs we were city apartment dwellers), and this was definitely a rude awakening into snow maintenance for a real house. We started shoveling, took a break, then had some teenagers come to the door and offer their shoveling services. We declined, and they took our shovel that we'd left in the driveway, and ran for it! Jerks.
Luckily Home Depot is still somehow fully stocked with snow shovels today, and we've also decided to invest in a snowblower. I also can't complain too much, because I've been on vacation all week, so at least the stress of getting to/from work in the city was blissfully gone, for once.
Snow is a serious business for some of us. I've had more than a few harrowing drives over the years. I worked with a nurse who died in an accident on her way home. I'm single and have a dog so staying over isn't an option. No hubby to drive me there and back either. Sometimes I can board the dog ahead of time if it's really going to be bad and then I can stay over at the hospital. Yes, the snow thread pops up every year but it's a big issue especially for those of us in hospital nursing. We all know that some are going to be "sick"
I get very anxious too. I start getting in panic mode as soon as I hear snow is expected on any of my work days. The reality is that people do get hurt driving in snow and ice, including nurses
The reality is that people do get hurt driving in all types of weather. Everyone takes a risk the moment they get into their car and put it in gear. Yes, there are additional hazards with snow and ice. But, it is almost always known about ahead of time. There is time to make plans. Health care personnel are essential personnel. People don't stop getting sick or hurt because of the weather. Those already working aren't robots- they can't work non-stop until the roads are cleared. It's a catch 22, but I know my employer expects me to make it to work. I make the arrangements to do so. I also have pets. I also have neighbors. They have a key. I have theirs. Quick phone call is all it takes. We're all in the medical field (the neighbors and I) and know how it goes.

I do make plans and I ALWAYS make it to work. Two of my neighbors work in the same hospital on the same shift I do and I don't really trust just anyone to be in my house. I said I get anxious. I didn't say I don't go to work.

That's probably how she meant it.
