I traditionally have a thread heading to the election, here we go.
Get out the popcorn for this one.
QuoteFlorida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce next week he is running for president in 2024, NBC News reported Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
The governor's official entry into the Republican primary field will put him head-to-head with former President Donald Trump, the party's current frontrunner for the nomination. Trump has already spent months treating DeSantis as his primary campaign rival, thrashing him with torrents of criticism over his gubernatorial record, his political skills and his personality.
Tweety said:He has long been antagonistic against Trump.
His point was the full page ads he took demanding the death penalty against the boys. Did he take out any full page ads against any other murderers and rapists? One of the accused said the was the firestarter or at least a feeder of the flames and hate that set New York afire. After a documentary about the Central Park five his main statements were that it was one-sided and didn't focus on the crimes they did commit, saying "innocent of what? How many people they mugged?".
All of this is old news. When the verdict was overturned he was asked for statements and made no apologies or admission that he was wrong. Also he was featured in the documentary which he and others criticized and it was dug up yet again.
Obviously good old Al Sharpton still wanted to exploit those times to demonize Trump even more. I was surprised he dug up those bones. I don't think that was necessary.
I'm not sure why you're thinking he's lining his pockets here in this case.
Yes, he does seem to make an appearance many times there have been victims of racism. (Think George Floyd?) What you call "exploiting victims of racism to line his own packets", another might say "civil rights activist". meh
George Floyd has been exploiting beyond belief. Profited from and used to invoke hate and division.
Where as he was a victim of a terrible crime, I'm not sure racism had much to do with it. This wasnt a factor in court however he was charged with violating Floys constitutional rights. No doubt he most likely felt superior to anyone.
I would speculate people like Sharpton have a monetary interest to stoke the flames of racism in order to grow his weath. Him and Ben Krump make millions of of these cases.
I'll look more into the 5 but as I understand it, many thought them guilty at the time. Whoever did commit this crime, I'm not sure the death penalty would be inappropriate considering how barbaric it was. Trump and several other people thought them guilty and they were convicted Wrongly but at the time no one knew that. However that's why that part is left out and only Trump is mentioned.
Sharpton is using the fallacy of emotion to push Harris' campaign. This case caused allot of emotion.
Some interesting commentary on what economists are saying about Harris and Trump.

Who is using George Floyd to "invoke hate and division" ? That's quite a claim to levy in such a generic and generalized way. My guess is that you can't discuss that statement in any sort of fact based fashion. Who is doing the invoking? Who is supposed to hate who? To me it sounds like you are simply demonizing people who would advocate for equal treatment by police.
You're not sure that racism was involved but you're also unsure that it wasn't. I guess you're thinking that there was some other reason that the killers didn't value the life of that man.
If only there weren't cases involving POC for Sharpton and Krump to be involved with, eh? Maybe you would respect them more for their efforts if they were not financially successful. Is that the issue?
It is for some reason important to you that other people were also wrong about those young men. Trump was a very loud voice for their deaths, not justice. Even then he desired vengeance and now his mental illness is out of control.
Sharpton used historical fact to remind people who Trump has always been. It is emotional to look at men who served time in prison for crimes they didn't commit and know that if Trump could have bought the justice HE wanted, those men would be dead and not attending a political convention. It was a demonstration of Trump's really bad judgement. He is unfit to serve as POTUS.
When Trump lies to his fans and tells them that democrats want abortions just before or even after birth, do you think that he's stirring up the emotions of his fans with lies? I don't recall you mentioning stoking emotion using lies as noteworthy but stoking emotion using facts is noteworthy for you. Maybe you can explain.

Yes many thought they were guilty before the trial even started but yes they were found guilty. When the boys were exonerated Trump then focused on the fact that they committed other crimes, and made no mention that they were victims of a great injustice. But I've already said I don't think it was necessary for Sharpton to go there.
Not sure if race was an issues in the Floyd murder, just like maybe race and racial profiling wasn't an issue in the Central Park Five and the victim being white. The Floyd murder was caught live and perhaps he might have been just as brutal to a white man, he was doing it became a perfect storm at a time when murder of black men by cops was a huge issue. No need to talk about it further as we talked about it ad nauseam as it was happening. The point being Al Sharpton was there.
Ben Krump is a civil rights lawyer and so of course he's enriched by such cases. The same as lawyers enrich themselves in all kinds of cases. Trump's lawyers apparently made 50 million from this PAC. Lawyers are money pigs.
Sharpton makes his money from this charities, speaking fees and MSNBC commentary. He's without a doubt a wealthy man. I've read a couple of sources that put him at 5 million net worth. Certainly not in the league of Joel Olsteen, but nonetheless less as an activist maybe it's a bit much. But his name enough is to bring in money for his charities, so he deserves some compensation. But he flies private jets and lives the lifestyle of the rich and famous.
I believe how I described him back then was a loudmouth and a race baiter. He makes his living stirring the pot, same as Hannity and Tucker. He has evolved to work to end homophobia in the black community so there is that. But it also makes sense that such a prominent figure would so up at prominent events around race.

This is a bit OT, but I'm gonna post it anyway. Let's not dismiss performative loudmouths so quickly.
Remember the beginnings of the AIDS epidemic? From 1981 to 1985, the Reagan administration, along with mainstream media, did everything they could to suppress any public awareness of and attempts to cope with the spread of the disease. It was the performative loudmouths like ActUp that lit a fire under the healthcare establishment to even begin to grapple with the epidemic. That is the social function of performative loudmouths: to crack open the complacency and self-serving denial that causes such harm to our body politic.
Of course there's financial exploitation - it's human nature. Entrepreneurs and big business do it every day. The trick is to screen out the sturm und drang to see the the underlying issues. Sometimes it's BS, sometimes it's an early warning, kinda like TIAs.
Sharpton's style is not my style. I don't know where his money comes from or the ethical framework for his handling of it. (The White majority's reaction to Black wealth would make for a fascinating discussion, though - but not here.) Regardless of the source of Sharpton's money, I do not consider the Central Park Five to be old news that should be discounted and forgotten.
Trump is a stone racist and we've known that for fifty years ... understanding his history is crucial. Back in 2015, number of posters on these fora tried to point out what we've known about him for years. We were drowned out by so-called conservatives, pickmes and bernie bros. - and look what happened.
To echo TMB: those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. If we ignore the fact that trump is a racist, a thief, a rapist. a liar and a white supremacist, then we are choosing tyranny.

That is very fair and I appreciate that assessment.
While I think he stirs the pop a bit much such as in this case brining out the Central Park 5, the pot really sometimes needs to be stirred and loudly so. He's done good work and overall I respect him for his accomplishments.
I too have often used the group Act Up and their loud disturbances and protests over AIDS treatments, that made a lot of people angry and uncomfortable, but guess what? It got things done.
Just to keep things balanced, I'd like to recommend this volume of Tom Wolfe's essays "Radical Chic and Mau-Mauing the Flack Catchers". Two truly hilarious send-ups of performative activism.
Available at both Amazon and, for $7, at Audible.
An excellent corrective for activist self-importance.
End of derail. Carry on ...
