The election 2024 Thread

Published

I traditionally have a thread heading to the election, here we go.

Get out the popcorn for this one.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce next week he is running for president in 2024, NBC News reported Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

The governor's official entry into the Republican primary field will put him head-to-head with former President Donald Trump, the party's current frontrunner for the nomination. Trump has already spent months treating DeSantis as his primary campaign rival, thrashing him with torrents of criticism over his gubernatorial record, his political skills and his personality.

Nah, you don't have to take my word for it. You can take the word of the political pundits on your favorite media outlet. Or you could watch just Biden's speech if you were interested in how he looked and sounded, it's available on YouTube.

The keynote speaker is always the last speaker. It's a good thing that Joe's dementia allowed him to stay up late and deliver cogent remarks late into the evening, isn't it?

I have no idea what he said as he hadn't gone on by 9pm my time, which was 11pm on the east coast.

I'm sure I could find it, but thanks.  I'm not really interested enough to bother.

I'd be willing to bet the Obamas will be in prime time tonight.

It was after 11:00 pm on the east coast when he spoke and I could barely stay awake, but it was after 10 in Colorado and 9 on the west coast.  Not the dead of night but quite late for some of us. They are being criticized for running late.

Even Fox News didn't mention anything about him being cognitively impaired, but rightly criticized some of the things he said about Trump.   What was interesting about their coverage is that when Biden spoke of the suffering of the Palestinian people and acknowledging protestors points,  Fox reporting the protestors as "terror supporters".   I've noted before how they report protestors as "anti-Israel" where others say "pro-Palestinian" but "terror supporters" is a new one to me.

I believe they are reffering to "protesters" that chant death to America, call for jihad and praise Hamas. Oh and when they only by chance conduct their "protests" in primarily Jewish  neighborhoods and in fromt of synagogue. These are the mostly peacful terrorist supporters.

Not having cable, I watched a bit of the convention online on the NYT's lifestream.  I saw bits and peaces as I find these things boring but I wanted to see Biden.

They had several reporters doing live chat commentary.  Mostly it was indeed pretty boring, hitting all the highlights of Democrat policy and rhetoric, and speaking of all the reason's Harris would make a good president.  The commentary wasn't always complimentary of the speakers.  One who was talking of her time in California made note that the police there were not fond of her.  One speaker towards the end noted was low engery but he was one of the last speakers and I'm sure the crowd was tired.

Clinton was really good and the crowd was fired up for her during her speech.

One commentator counted Biden's initial ovation at 4 1/2 minutes, but I also read elsewhere 3 1/2, but obviously the crowd was appreciative of his service and the signs and chants of "We Love Joe" were obviously an homage to his service, but a thank you for stepping down.  I think it must have been hard for him as he worked his life to be President and loved being President.

The Biden at the disastrous debate and the clear and coherent man last night were almost two different people.  Alas I was in bed with my phone at that point as it ran really late and didn't listen to the whole thing as my Trazadone was kicking in.  LOL

Most likely I will not be watching anymore but will catch the highlights.

Dear Lord:  I wish Trazadone worked that well for me....ESPECIALLY after watching a political convention.

I don't know if it was the Trazodone or the speeches that put me to sleep.  LOL. Trazodone in combo with fatigue tends to send me over and get me to sleep, but now my insomnia trait is not being able to stay asleep.

It was on today's headline, talking about the protestors (why the quotes in your post?) at the convention last night and Biden's mentioning that they have a point in that the Palestinian people have suffered at the hands of Israel.  These are innocent people, not terrorists.  But I wasn't there, so I don't know what they were chanting.

But certainly there are people here in America that are sympathetic to the mission of Hamas and are anti-Israel and thus pro-terrorist.  But Democrats such as myself and perhaps some of the protestors last night should not be included in such nonsense and I think we already talked about those articles you posted.  Their stance hasn't changed much in that they won't vote for Harris without a ceasefire.  Biden is trying to make this happen.  Wonder if Trump will try to stop it.

I think it's irresponsible reporting on Fox's part to call them "pro-terrorist" anymore than it would be if they called pro-Israel protestors "pro-genocide" protestors.  Apparently there were about 40 pro-Israel protestors there last night as well...protected by 20 police officers.

About last night:

Quote

Thousands of marchers took to the streets for a mostly peaceful protest near the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on its opening day, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and an end to US support for Israel.

But several demonstrators were arrested when dozens of them broke through a security fence around the Chicago venue.

The turnout appeared to be well below the tens of thousands that organisers had hoped for and short of the 15,000 they claimed turned out.

Probably, he's the keynote speaker and should be last, but there's also the roll call so wonder if he speaks before then?   I won't be watching, although I'm a huge Michelle Obama fan and might try and catch her.   Conventions generally don't interest me.

Of note (to me at least) a republican mayor from Mesa, Arizona is speaking tonight as part of the "Republicans for Harris" thing.

Trump also labelled pro-Palestinian supporters calling for an end to U.S. support for Israel's war as "pro-Hamas thugs" and "jihad sympathizers." He threatened to arrest and deport them from the U.S. if he became president.

Really, why is Trump even in talks with Israel.  This is a major diplomatic and international issue but not his lane.

Probably for the same reason he torpedoed the bipartisan border bill. After all, one of his frequent claims is how various other international issues (I.e. the Russian invasion of Ukraine) would be instantly solved if only he could have intervened. He sees ongoing conflict as good for his campaign.
