I traditionally have a thread heading to the election, here we go.
Get out the popcorn for this one.
QuoteFlorida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce next week he is running for president in 2024, NBC News reported Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
The governor's official entry into the Republican primary field will put him head-to-head with former President Donald Trump, the party's current frontrunner for the nomination. Trump has already spent months treating DeSantis as his primary campaign rival, thrashing him with torrents of criticism over his gubernatorial record, his political skills and his personality.
I would say that at this point debates are useless but since the last one brought down Biden, perhaps a debate may accomplish something. What, I'm not sure of. But they practically are mandatory. Harris will be able to hold her own I'm sure as Trump makes stuff up and attacks her about the border. Hopefully, Harris can keep her facts straight as well.
As he announced the three debates when he decided to flip flop he said "she's barely competent and she can't do an interview, but I look forward to the debates" but flubbed up the dates he was going to debate her. A gaffe or cognitive decline? (joke)

He said on August 5th that he wasn't honoring that debate commitment, now he's decided he will attend that debate and is blowing smoke about other debate dates. I noticed that Baier "fact checked" the guest by saying that Trump had agreed to debate Biden and wasn't obligated once Biden dropped out. Interestingly, the debate that Trump agreed to didn't specify who his debate opponent would be, only the details and rules of the debate for the candidates and the network are outlined... not the specific candidate names. Trump maybe thought he agreed to debate Biden at ABC but now he understands that he agreed to a debate with the other (un-named) presidential candidate and he had to retract his refusal.
Yes. Kamala Harris will debate Trump. I think that another debate after the 9/10 ABC debate will be discussed but I fully expect Trump to struggle in a Harris debate. If Trump's ABC debate performance is anything like that Musk interview Trump will be looking for that Fox News debate safe space with a live, handpicked audience to make him feel smart and strong.

QuoteVance's speech came the same day the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released a report showing year-over-year inflation had reached its lowest level in more than three years during July. It also came as the U.S. unemployment rate increased from 3.7% in January to 4.3% in July, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, while Michigan's jobless rate has seesawed up to 4.1% in June after hitting a low of 3.6% in April 2023.
QuoteWhen a reporter asked about the new inflation numbers, the crowd in Kent County booed, and someone yelled "fake news."
Vance replied, "I think the crowd reaction says it all. When they say inflation is down, they mean from a base line where groceries are already 30% more expensive than they were when Donald Trump was president."
Vance is a comfortable spin doctor, encouraging people to believe the politicians and not the actual numbers. He also promotes the lie that Trump was a good president and that the 2020 election was stolen.
30% is an outrageous number but I wonder if Vance and Trump know we can fact check. But apparently according to Vance his audience is believing him.
There is no doubt that inflation began under Biden and that's Harris's cross to bear but do they have to lie about it?
QuoteThe five presidents before Biden saw overall food prices rise from 5.3% (under Trump) to 12.3% (under George H.W. Bush) during their first three years in office.
By contrast, in Biden's first three years, food prices increased by 20.3%. That rise stemmed from the same causes that drove overall inflation higher — supply-chain difficulties during and after the coronavirus pandemic, exacerbated by policies Biden pursued early in his presidency that put more money into Americans' hands when supplies of goods were limited.
But even the unusually high food inflation during Biden's first three years has not come close to the 40% to 60% cited by Trump.
Food prices have risen 40% from April 2012 to today, and they have risen 60% from August 2007 to today. But these rises over 12 and 16 years are longer than just "a few years ago.”

So I was with a patient and he had Fox News on mute and the headline under under the commentator was "Comrade Kamala". I wanted to see what they were talking about, as I know they are actively campaigning against her so I knew it wasn't good.
I guess it might have come from Trump himself, and I saw t-shirts are for sale. My guess if Fox is playing the socialist card.
QuoteTrump accused Walz of promoting socialism, of being too liberal on immigration and transgender issues and of letting "rioters and looters burn down Minneapolis" after George Floyd's murder in 2020. He yoked the vice president to her new running mate's policies, saying: "This is her ideology. That's why she picked him.” He warned that Harris and Walz would turn America into a "full-blown communist country.”

What else would we expect from Trump? He's acting as if he doesn't even want the job anymore. He's done everything to do to increase the suspicion that there he is demented. Picking JD Vance was one of the biggest symptoms of his bad choices. If he were a nursing home patient, the staff would warn any strangers going into the room that he is demented and don't get him started. And if they went into that room, they wouldn't think anything differently. What a PIA patient he would make!
Not having cable, I watched a bit of the convention online on the NYT's lifestream. I saw bits and peaces as I find these things boring but I wanted to see Biden.
They had several reporters doing live chat commentary. Mostly it was indeed pretty boring, hitting all the highlights of Democrat policy and rhetoric, and speaking of all the reason's Harris would make a good president. The commentary wasn't always complimentary of the speakers. One who was talking of her time in California made note that the police there were not fond of her. One speaker towards the end noted was low engery but he was one of the last speakers and I'm sure the crowd was tired.
Clinton was really good and the crowd was fired up for her during her speech.
One commentator counted Biden's initial ovation at 4 1/2 minutes, but I also read elsewhere 3 1/2, but obviously the crowd was appreciative of his service and the signs and chants of "We Love Joe" were obviously an homage to his service, but a thank you for stepping down. I think it must have been hard for him as he worked his life to be President and loved being President.
The Biden at the disastrous debate and the clear and coherent man last night were almost two different people. Alas I was in bed with my phone at that point as it ran really late and didn't listen to the whole thing as my Trazadone was kicking in. LOL
Most likely I will not be watching anymore but will catch the highlights.

"Character is destiny" Biden said.
Thank you Joe.
We'll have to take your word for it as I and most of the rest of the country was in bed by the time they let him speak.

Nah, you don't have to take my word for it. You can take the word of the political pundits on your favorite media outlet. Or you could watch just Biden's speech if you were interested in how he looked and sounded, it's available on YouTube.
The keynote speaker is always the last speaker. It's a good thing that Joe's dementia allowed him to stay up late and deliver cogent remarks late into the evening, isn't it?
