The election 2024 Thread

Published

I traditionally have a thread heading to the election, here we go.

Get out the popcorn for this one.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce next week he is running for president in 2024, NBC News reported Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

The governor's official entry into the Republican primary field will put him head-to-head with former President Donald Trump, the party's current frontrunner for the nomination. Trump has already spent months treating DeSantis as his primary campaign rival, thrashing him with torrents of criticism over his gubernatorial record, his political skills and his personality.

I guess Vance's wife is getting some heat from white supremacists.  He is getting some flack for merely saying he loves his wife even though she's not white but doesn't seem to condemn the white supremacists.  Meh.....not a controversy to me.

How to spot misinformation online and avoid falling for false claims in this presidential election

Quote

...The News Literacy Project asks us to be skeptical about items online that:

  • Have excessive punctuation or all caps for emphasis
  • Offer secret information that the "media doesn't want you to know"
  • Don't have bylines (authors' names) on pieces
  • Don't have a current date
  • Don't hyperlink to quality sources

The Project reminds us that "bots are extremely active on social media and are designed to dominate conversations and spread propaganda.”

The American Psychological Association reports that misinformation can be "sticky" — hanging around in our brains for years after the erroneous facts have been corrected. This is especially true of items that evoke contempt or fear, or are frequently liked, commented on, or shared online.

Also helping misinformation linger is confirmation bias, which makes us less likely to doubt or check out information that conforms with our views.

Quote

John Giles, the Republican mayor of Arizona's third largest city and a previous thorn in the side of his party for endorsing Democrats, has thrown his support behind Kamala Harris for president.

Quote

"Our party used to stand for the belief that every Arizonan, no matter their background or circumstances, should have the freedom, opportunity and security to live out their American Dream,” Giles wrote. "But since Donald Trump refused to accept the outcome of the 2020 election, Republicans have yet to course correct,” he continued. "The Republican party with Trump at its helm continues down the path of political extremism, away from focusing on our fundamental freedoms.”

Quote

Giles claimed that, under Trump, cities didn't receive the federal support they needed compared to the infrastructure funding and Chips act funding provided to cities under the Biden-Harris Administration.

He also criticized Trump on foreign policy, stating that the former president would threaten to leave Nato and harm America's standing abroad. He compared Harris's leadership favorably to that of John McCain, the late US senator.

Giles was censured in 2022 by the Arizona Republican party for endorsing the Democrat Mark Kelly in his ultimately successful bid for the Senate. He has characterized himself as "a Republican in the spirit of Ronald Reagan", and said the reason he sometimes endorses across party lines is because he supports candidates who do not threaten democracy.

Surprisingly, I've got a broader retirement portfolio than a governor as own stocks, way behind a Senator.

He's not "regular people".  He's well above the median for his state. (as he should be he's earned it.)

I might have a bigger stock portfolio as well, but I was forced to as I don't get a pension for 20 years of work or 50 years if I stayed.

That being said, he's lives a humble life.

I saw a post somewhere today that talked about his daughter being a social worker that works in a homeless shelter and "what an amazing family they are"?  Really?  Having a daughter that is a social worker makes them "amazing"?

I saw a picture of him handing out Halloween Candy, and isn't he a great guy?  Really?  Don't millions of people hand out Halloween Candy?

I get that people really really like him but this mad love at this father figure that's a regular guy is a bit much.

I think it says a lot about our society that when a politician is down to earth and acts like a normal person it's amazing.  SMH

She chose wisely.

I think Walz is a regular person.  He was born with no economic or political advantages and needed to use the GI bill to afford college.  Walz was a public school teacher, that's pretty regular.  He was a HS  football coach, that's pretty regular.

The entire notion of the "American Dream" is one of a regular person, exactly like Walz, achieving a governor's position and potentially the Vice Presidency...IMV.

It's great example of how the propagandist liberal media operates.

Remember, there nothing wrong with Biden's cognitive abilities despite many of us seeing it for a few years now..  Until literally overnight he became unfit to run again and they pulled out their knives for him.

Then  almost overnight one of the most unpopular Vice-Presidents in history, who was a dismal Presidential candidate just 4 years ago (actually longer as her campaign didn't even make it to 2020) and who hasn't done anything of significance since, is now the Democrat candidate most fit to run.

Then she picked a radical leftist governor who most have never heard of to be her running mate.

Now, the two of them.together are somehow the best ticket in.our lifetime.

Alt least thats according to the propagandist liberal media.

Fair enough but you are speaking in the past and what he was.  Your post originally was talking about his financial position as a qualifier for him to be a "regular" person in the here and now and I offered my opinion about that.  Regular people don't live in a mansion as a job benefit, with a pension and a six figure salary.  In my opinion.

His background as an adult certainly is more ordinary than your average politician like Trump or others born with a silver spoon and advantage.

I'm going backward in time because I didn't give one second of attention to the Republican convention.  I saw in his speech how he spoke of his grandmother having 19 loaded guns around her house and that was the "American Spirit" because she wanted to protect her family and have a gun at arms length.

Yep, the American spirit is some sort of out of control paranoia and need to protect their family.  Okay.

Quote

And while we're on the topic of grandparents, let me tell you another Mamaw story. Now, my mamaw died shortly before I left for Iraq, in 2005. And when we went through her things, we found 19 loaded handguns. Now, the thing is, they were stashed all over her house. Under her bed, in her closet. In the silverware drawer. And we wondered what was going on, and it occurred to us that towards the end of her life, Mamaw couldn't get around so well. And so this frail old woman made sure that no matter where she was, she was within arms' length of whatever she needed to protect her family. That's who we fight for. That's American spirit.
