The election 2024 Thread

Published

I traditionally have a thread heading to the election, here we go.

Get out the popcorn for this one.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce next week he is running for president in 2024, NBC News reported Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

The governor's official entry into the Republican primary field will put him head-to-head with former President Donald Trump, the party's current frontrunner for the nomination. Trump has already spent months treating DeSantis as his primary campaign rival, thrashing him with torrents of criticism over his gubernatorial record, his political skills and his personality.

The analysis is the Kennedy is going to start out strong.  I think he knows this otherwise he wouldn't have gone Independent.  There is dissatisfaction against both Trump and Biden and he could be seen as an alternative.

His stance is "declare your independence!".

About climate change he says. "This crisis is being used as a pretext for clamping down totalitarian controls, the same way the COVID crisis was, and it's the same people: it's the intelligence agencies, it's the world economic forum, it's the billionaire boys' club ..."

He is feeding the fuel out there to mistrust American institutions because they only want to control you, but also unlike Republicans he doesn't seem to like billionaires (even though he was born with a silver spoon and is a depo baby politician) which attracts a lot of people.

Time will tell.

Don't know what to make of him.  Lots to like, and lots not to like.

I guess will make things a bit mire interesting.

I meant to say "nepo baby" above not depo.  My spellcheck needs to learn the word.

I agree with his family.  He's a horrible candidate for President.

He paints a dark, conspiratorial picture of the world, bristling with debunked theories, misleading claims and outright falsehoods.

I watched the GOP "debate" again, last night. It's sort of like the morbid curiosity of watching a train wreck. Except it's possible that should DJT have a stroke and die in the next year, that one of these yahoos could be president.

In my opinion, Haley made the best showing again, even though she tripped up on her words a little.

DeSantis used his customary vocabulary of violence.

Ramaswamy is going to build a southern and northern wall, LOL. Does that include Alaska, genius?

Tim Scott seems convinced that he is going to make the USA into a Christian theocracy.

Christie made some good points, up until he talked about abortion in the ninth month.

I sure didn't miss Pence.

Meanwhile, DJT was in another venue, mixing up China and North Korea.

We also watched the debate.  Most of the candidates appear to be running for second place, afraid to mention the front runner. The violent, angry and divisive rhetoric is impressive.  It it seemed that many of them feel that's the best language to engage conservative voters.

We hear that nonsense about 9th month abortion from "conservative" members in these threads sometimes.  It's the kind of emotional nonsense used to manipulate groups of people.

I kinda hope they keep it up ... it's biting them in the butt at the polls.

I suppose. I can't help but think it minimizes the trauma that actual people who need late term abortions go through.

And Nicki called Vivek scum.  That's a new term for a presidential debate.  However, I saw him interviewed on CNN and she is spot on.

It will be interesting to see if the Republican party will follow the advice of the strategists or if they will speak primarily for the small population who hold extremist views on the topic?

The majority of U.S. adults, including those living in states with the strictest limits on abortion, want it to be legal at least through the initial stages of pregnancy, a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds.

From the debate responses last night, most of the candidates need to pivot.

I missed the debate.  Do you have an example?

Given that DeSantis talked about "slitting throats" on day one if elected earlier in the campaign, violent language wouldn't be out of character for him, would it?

Doesn't that put the onus on pro-choicers to do some public fact checking - aka consciousness raising? Women who need late-term abortions have been an invisible constituency since forever. It's up to us to change that because the forced birth folks sure won't.

A lie is a lie is a lie ... and the forced-birth crowd are deliberately pinning their hopes for radical Christian hegemony on consciously lying about those they oppose. Where do you think republicans learned it?

If they choose to shoot themselves in the foot, who am I to tell them different?

I've been trying to find sources without a paywall.

DeSantis said he was going to rip up The Green New Deal and throw it in the trash. Apparently the Green New Deal was only a proposed resolution that has never been passed.

DeSantis if someone from a drug cartel was caught sneaking fentanyl across the border, he would have them shot stone cold dead.

He also said he was going to take all executive actions regarding Bidenomics and rip them up and throw in the trash.
