The detail I missed that set my day on the wrong foot

Published

I recently graduated, so I'm not exactly on the level of one of the super hero nurses out there kicking butt and taking names like the ones I admire. I'm lucky to get my kicked butt in gear and clumsily juggle an average work day as a baby RN. Today was just one of those days. The frustrating days we all have where you can't seem to do anything right or smoothly. I wondered what the first domino was in the chain of fallen ones I'd left behind myself all day. I figured it out. I figured it out in my car after a grueling 12 hour shift. I looked down while cranking my car in the parking lot of the hospital only to realize something horrible.

No, I didn't make a med error that just popped into realization.

No no I didn't forget to give report.

No no no I didn't find "saved for later" medications in my pocket I'd neglected to give.

I looked down to see I had managed to put on unmatched white shoes from two different pairs.

I can only hope I was alone in this hilarious enlightened moment where I'd missed the detail which started my day off on the wrong foot.

I can top that. I've worn two different sneakers: one black, one white. I didn't notice until someone pointed it out to me--several hours into the shift--and asked if it was a runners' thing.

The sad part is that I've done that more than once

Nurse J22, I put my scrub pants on backward once too! Wondered all morning where my pockets went!

That is just darling! I love it!!!!

Well, I did something with less class than I meant to as a new grad L.P.N.

It was Evening Shift on the Spine Unit where I worked years ago. I had just assisted my patient up to the bedside commode. I had washed my hands and was preparing to do vitals.

We wore around our necks, that electronic thermometer while on rounds..you know, the one with the box of probes that we've torn the top off of for easier access?

My stethoscope was also around my neck and I forgot as I turned to grab something for her and my scope's head swung out and knocked her empty water pitcher making it air borne, across the room.

In my embarrassment and profuse apology for my clumsiness, I noticed an item from her bedside table that had fallen on the floor. When I bent down to retrieve it, all the clean thermometer probes slid at the same time, out of the box, and rolled under her bed, and kept rolling. I was mortified.

My patient calmly watched the whole thing smiling, and gently asked, "Would you like to go home?"

I'm a huge klutz so I have embarrassing moments almost daily, but the one wardrobe issue I recall is when I was newer nurse working nights on med/surg & realized that I forgot to change underwear before work. We were required to wear white scrubs and I had left on my black underwear. I had to leave my scrub jacket around my waist all night.

I discovered that my new scrubs had a fly, which had been down, for the previous 14 hours.

When I worked at the hospital I once put a patients shoes on the wrong feet. He looked sideways at me and said "Honey, I think we have a problem". I was totally oblivious. He had to tell that I put his shoes one wrong! I apologized and told him that I had a 2 y/o at home who was always wearing his shoes on the wrong feet, so it looked normal to me!

I can NEVER get patients shoes on the correct feet....? foot ? I joke with them I could never get a job in a shoe store.

What are some of your embarrassing moments as a nurse?

My most embarrassing moment was more related to the stress of not knowing anything and overwhelming fatigue of night shift. I rarely cry but as a new grad I found myself bursting into tears all of the time. At 1st I would make it to the cars before sobbing, then I would pride myself on still making it off the unit.

One night I dragged my sorry tush onto the unit in abject dread of what new stressors awaited me...0300 AM I just laid my head on the desk and burst into tears. My colleagues all thought I was just an emotionally unhinged RN who would never survive 1st year, I had a tough life and was beyond humiliated that I was such a wreck over being a newbie...I would not wish it on anyone.

I forgot about the time I was scheduled to come in later on day shift, at 10:00 am. It was summer I had been out and about. Get to work and realize I'm still wearing my sandals. I put surgical shoe covers on, no one asked me about why I had them on, I don't work in OR.

Totally did that one. I got called in on a warm summer day I was wearing Tevas and didn't even think about what I was missing until I was changing into scrubs in the locker room.

I tried to put the shoe covers on my feet then wear shoes over them. No go. Waaaaay too hot! At this very moment I have a pair of socks in my locker for the next time I'm Sockless in Seattle.

Not a big deal, really, but forgot to shave one day before going to work.

It's the fashion now to wear two different socks. You were just trying out a new version.

My first day of college we were supposed to wear a white T-shirt with the college logo of it. Half way there I spilled coffe on it with the predictable result of it becoming see through. I had three choices. Go home and change, making myself late, wear it see through, or wear the bright red T-shirt in my car. I decided to wear red. Surely in everyone wouldn't be in that T-shirt? Of course they were. I stuck out like a bright red thumb.

i have also shown up wearing two different shoes. My coworkers figured it out within thirty seconds and on one memorable occasion I was at work before I realized I was missing my bra. I need a bra. How on earth did I forget it?
