Thanks to the decision makers in Albany!

:mad:I really do wonder who the idiots are that make the policys in NY state. Over the past several years, they have been making a push to eradicate all LPNs from hospitals, by making them unable to do the job they were hired for- I myself was fired from a maternity poistion I had held for 9 years and LOVED...because I was an LPN, and the hospital was getting rid of them because of the restrictions placed on scope of practice. I was devastated, and cried for 3 days. Fortunatly, I also had a part time med/surg cardiac position in another hospital where I was able to go full time. I finished my RN, and remained at the same facility. They have been trying to encourage the LPNs to go elsewhere in this new facility- Last night I just found out they fired our last LPN....who aside from being a fantastic nurse...has been working as a floor nurse for 33 YEARS!!!!! SHe must be devestated! SHAME ON YOU PEOPLE IN ALBANY WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We work short staffed frequently, and we are loseing a strong nurse because of what she has after her name....BUT HEY! we still get to keep the brand new baby nurses spit fresh out of RN school, who can take care of 2 whole patients by themselves, and write a SPIFFY care plan:yawn: Our hospital logo is "It's the PEOPLE, it's the CARE!" I believe we should change it to "Screw the patients, the hell with the staff....cause it's the MONEY!!!!!!" We are facing a horrible nursing shortage, and they are getting rid of valuable, experienced LPNs because Albany wants everyone to be an RN. I really hope the poplicy makers get hospitalized for something, and look up to find out that their brand new RN-lette doesn't know what end of a bedpan to use, but that the nurse who has 30 years experience is now working at Walmart. Thanks so very much!

I like your new logo. It fits many employers.

I'm not surprised, I feel for the LPN with so much experience, I hope her stint at Walmart is short, I'm sure some facility would be more than glad to have her.

Here in GA we have some interesting legislation in the works but I doubt it will pass. They want RN's to train and be responsible for CNA's in the home health care setting for high acuity patients - giving shots, vents, etc. I doubt it will pass, but the reasoning behind it all....money. When health care is a for profit environment we will constantly see ways to do it cheaper instead of better.

Maybe its me..but I noticed the scope of practice and hiring of LPNs tend to change with the economy and/or shortage. I bet you anything IF the economy perks up and the shortage hits again, you will find LPNs again with more scope. They really should have grandfathered those LPNs in. What a shame.

Don't blame Albany, it's the hospitals doing it. Our scope of practice has not changed here in NY. It's the powers that be in the hospital adminstration that do this. You can't do away with us, you all need us too much. It was alot like this in the early 80's and then it changed. Thank you for appreciating experience and knowledge. We may be down right now, be we aren't out.Hospitals here in Central NY, still hire LPN's. I appreciate RN's like you:up: Thank you!

There was some change in scope of practice. I believe it relates to central lines. Weren't LPNs allowed to change solutions on a central line after a RN started them up at one time. Perhaps it isn't as much a change as a clarification on the part of the state????

But I do agree that hospitals can now be choosier due to the economy and are pushing this change. They still do hire a few LPNs at the local hospitals in the Rochester area, but not as many as a few years ago. Even new graduate RNs have to work a bit harder to find a job.

So, they're hiring baby RNs in your facility? Nice.

I'm sorry about your friend. I'm curious why she didn't get her RN in all those 33 years? I have a friend like this as well. It doesn't make sense to me really. It's just a year of school and with all that experience, it seems she would do really well.

I feel for your friend. One of the LPNs gave me better orientation as GN then all those others with RN behind their name. If this will make you feel better (or maybe even worse:)) in town I live one of the hospitals anounced that they will not hire RN ( GN) with AAS if they do not identify a plan for taking their BSN classes. What to say - time of big sharks.. all about money .. or whatever. ... I know also , I have to admit this that working with LPN in acute care is not easy either. If you end up with "good" worker you still have to pull all IVs and PICCs and everything about those line ( but isn't everything about them these days in hospitals anyway) ,and when you end up with" interesting" workers LPN you can end up with someone who stops PCA to infuse other meds because " that's what RN did!" My question was could you start a new IV ? Nope - did not want to do that -- too much work. Two sides of coin.

That makes me so sad... I feel so badly for the wonderful nurses with years of experience who were canned just because they had three letters after their name instead of two. :(

My sister-in-law has been an LPN for the past 13 years, and she is amazing. I would be heartbroken for her if she lost her job because someone wanted the "RN" after the name.

I resent you attitude. I was once a brand new nurse and I studied hard for 4 years to earn my BSN. Why didn't your friend get an RN license after 33 years? And furthermore, I know how to put a patient on a bedpan.

It's not about the letters. It's about the training. You really do learn something in that extra year it takes to get the RN. Really. I'm sure they are all wonderful nurses and people, but I'm wondering why they never went back to school. Did they really think there was no difference in the RN and LPN except the lettering? That's kind of sad. I mean MD is only two letters, so is MA. No biggie, right? It's just letters. Not. CNA is only letters, too. I've known CNAs who've been CNAs forever. Tons of experience. They're not LPNs.

LPNs, really, honest question: Why don't you go back to school for your degree? Will your employer not pay for it? You can't work your schedule around it? You just don't want to? What? As long as you're an LPN, you'll never be an RN, no matter how many years experience you have. It just seems like such a waste.

A bed what? Oh, that hard plastic seat thing. The hole side faces down, duh...
