would you take a job with a mean doctor?

Published

I am in the process of interviewing for a RN position in an ambulatory setting, two days a week. As I weigh out the pros and cons of the position, the biggest CON is the physician I would be working along side of. She is excellent at what she does but she is......mean. I know it because I've seen it first hand when she rounded on my patient on a nursing division. She didn't like something she saw so she really laid in to me about it in a nasty way. The nurses who currently work with her in this clinic confirmed my suspicions.

So my question is.....would you work for a mean doctor?

Me? No.

I expect to be emoloyed in a place for a long period. I would not be willing to take a job where day in/ day out I was either being treated horribly, or in fear of being treated horribly.

Far at too many other positions for me out there for me to be willing to be a random doc's punching bag.

No. This physician can make your life a living hell should she choose and it sounds like she has no issue with choosing that option. Doesn't matter what the pay and benefits are if you work for a witch who makes you hate going to work.

Nope, not for all the money in the world. For me it would mean spending all day anxious, waiting to be yelled at, talked down to, etc. I would always be on edge. That is no way to spend your days.

Nope. A few years ago, I was interviewed by a somewhat famous physician (there was a documentary about him and a couple other physicians who are the only ones in the world who do what they do) for the position as his practice manager. I ultimately turned it down (and still have pangs of regret now and again, as it would have been an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity) because he was kind of an arrogant ass, and I know it would have been a constant exercise in tongue-biting to work with him every day.

Life's too short, and the provider, particularly if s/he is also the owner of the clinic, will make or break your sanity and happiness.

Nope. The quality of my life (including my work life) is important to me.

Specializes in NICU, ICU, PICU, Academia.

Life is far too short to be miserable.

Absolutely not and I've spent the last 5 years in ambulatory care. I don't care what letters someone has after their name, it does not excuse childish, offensive behavior.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I would accept a position working alongside a mean-spirited physician only if I were currently unemployed and facing impending homelessness.

But under all other circumstances, I would not voluntarily subject myself to working with a mean doctor. Life is too short to deal with another person's vitriol on a routine basis, especially that of a colleague or boss.

My mean streak might over shadow hers....wouldn't want to awaken sleeping dawgs from yesteryear.;)

Nah. Life is too short. Maybe she'll get an equally nasty nurse to put her in her place. HA
