SY 2021-2022 Roll Call

Published

Hey gang,

I'm back for my third year in my current district, seventh year a s a school nurse.  Just wanted to see who all is back here this year for another round of crazy town ?  I spent most of my Summer entertaining the idea of leaving my job after a very difficult several months doing everything BUT what I was hired to do, and in the end I decided to come back for year three in my current role/school.  I am still a daily visitor to Schoolspring and Indeed ? and it is unbelievable (but understandable) how many school nurse jobs there are even just within a 25 mile radius of my own district.  The schools are hemorrhaging not only nurses, but teachers, student services staff, etc.

Who is back?

What year is this for you?

Anyone here new?

So glad to have all you knowledgable ladies and gents to collaborate with and totally wish we had a real-life chance to meet ?

I am back for my third year as the school nurse in my district's Early Childhood Program!   This year I am also the Early Childhood Screening Coordinator after our former one retired.  We have decided to completely change the way we do our screenings so I have been very busy trying to get that all organized and figured out in addition to having 2 preschoolers with type I DM and having our largest enrollment in the last 5 years! ?

We are seeing so many preschoolers struggling with behaviors and being behind in basic skills.  We are thinking it has been the isolation of the past year and a half (many of them didn't go to daycare or any kind of preschool program last year) when many of them missed out on some pretty critical developmental milestones.  It's been really hard to see them struggle. ☹️

I have been back at work for 7 weeks now and I am exhausted.  But I have a good team behind me and we'll figure it out.  Right now we are seeing a surge in COVID cases amongst our staff so we're working our butts off trying to cover everything.  I come home and switch into self-care mode (pjs on, hot bath and a book, a glass of sparkling water [and sometimes wine] just to have the energy to get up and do it all again.  ?

Hi! 5th year for me, and I think about leaving every single day. I used to absolutely love my job until covid hit, doing all of the contact tracing, I can’t even get everything else done. Plus parents screaming at me left and right because of the protocols in place ?

Its frustrating for sure!  Having to be the one to enforce quarantines, our new 48 hours before returning (for any Covid-like symptom), etc has definitely put a strain on being a school nurse.

Year #28 for me...riding it out to retirement! Unless I win Powerball or find Mr Right who has excellent insurance!

I'm guessing I'll be here for the duration!!?

Specializes in 12 years as a school nurse.

Year 9 for me here. I agree, the past 2 years have been challenging, but I still think this is better than hospital nursing! What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!?

Specializes in school nursing, ortho, trauma.

Back for year 18 (I think??) 11 years until I can retire... I mean unless someone offers me a huge paycheck doing something else... then I may have to think on it.

This is 14 th year as a school nurse. I'm in for the duration. This is still better than any other area I have worked in up to this point.

So glad to see so many familiar names. This is the first time in 6 weeks I have had 3.5   uninterrupted  minutes to read anything.

Hang in there!

Year 9 for me.

I got a promotion this past year and my official title is School Nurse Leader and I work year round now (with a nice bump up in pay).

I'm busy all the time. And most of it still COVID related. But I still love school nursing, love finally having all the kids back in person, and can't image doing anything else. I also love my school.

Specializes in Peds.

I am back for year 8.  I do think about leaving daily.  This is the craziest we have ever been.  This year seems worse than last year.  We are testing in our district so that has been added to the plate.  If I didn't love my summers off and love these students, I would be gone!
