Calling A Code Death (call police?)
Yeah, it varies from state to state. Medical facilities in my state report deaths to the state ME, not to the police. If paramedics are called to outside-the-facility, they have their own procedures. In the next state over, it's common to call the police for outside-the-facility death reports.

Back to School Night
In prior years, my contract only covered the days students were actually in the building for classes. Last year we got them to add a few extra days to cover things like BTS night and the day immediately before and after the year (like teachers get).
- What do school nurses do with student medications at the end of the year?
-
Who's almost done???
We go to June 9. Technically, that's my last day too, but I'll likely come in for at least part of the next day to finish up anything that falls through the cracks. There's always one kid...

School RN through agency or district?
We (the school district) hire directly. We looked into using an agency to supply temporary help for things like COVID screening and absences, but the local agencies didn't seem too interested in staffing us, so our administrators gave up.
-
What do you do when parents scream at you?
Yes, I defer the call to the administrator if it gets to the point of yelling. Fortunately, mine are very supportive of that (and more thick skinned about being yelled at).

Spring BREAK
We're off Friday and then all next week. The teachers have an in-service Friday, but I don't have to work it (it makes up for me staying late on Thursday and coming in early on Monday) to deal with the catheters.

Drugs in HS?
Yeah, vomiting even occurs from nicotine-vaping/smoking at times.

Drugs in HS?
Someone posted here a bunch of evaluation protocol forms. I've adapted one of those for our own use. Yeah, you can usually tell pretty quickly. Of course, as the DO nurse, I'm tasked with the drug testing and many students are by virtue of sports/extracurriculars subject to be testing, so for them I run the tests. For others, I suspect, I see if I can get the parents to opt into testing over the phone.

New to work and School Nursing.
I'm an LPN in a high school. Like the above, our "real" school nurse of record has to be an RN. LPNs and LVNs are used in other support roles. I work in the main office, lot of reviewing IEP/IDP/IHPs but some clinical stuff.

High School Students over 18
I believe it varies by state, both the rules and and the age of majority. Your district should have the policy for this. The rule we have for IEP and IHP and the like for adult students is that the student is invited to participate in the process. The student is informed that they are allowed to have their parent participate, but they must give that permission. The student is the one who has to sign the consent for changes. Of course, this all is predicated on the student being competent to make decisions. For a large quantity of our 504 students, they are.

Is it really this bad every where?
I'm hoping things settle down by the end of the year, but with our administration, I've managed to secure enough catheters and "add a cath" and related stuff (leg bags, and cath securing straps) to get us through to January (provided we don't get too many more students that need them). I'm going to be out of the full kits this Monday when the kids get back from their catheter-free weekend.
-
Is it really this bad every where?
Yes, I just talked to our supplier. I can still get the silicone catheters individually (you are right, the bard kits are not available here). Fortunately, I don't have too many with foleys, and I've got enough on hand for the end of quarter changeout, but things are going to be real unhappy if I don't have more for the Thanksgiving holidays and the kids have to keep them in over the long weekend.

SY 2021-2022 Roll Call
My first year as DO nurse. So far having a good time.
