Student Nurse "Help me!" Threads

Published

I think I'm done answering student nurse help me threads here.

I've gotten rude answers, or they never even bother coming back to the thread to acknowledge the answers they received.

Some will ask life choice questions like "Where should I move?" or "Where should I apply?". Do they think someone is going to offer them a job here, is that why they start these threads? You have the whole internet to research towns, cities, regions, but instead you post a thread asking a bunch of strangers where you should move?

Some help me threads seem to be 'Help me do my homework' threads.

Thank you for reading.

Really? So the rest of my life should be put on hold while I take home 5 binders of P&Ps? Makes perfect sense to me!

No one is saying that you need to chain yourself to a desk and become a social recluse. But yes, some of your learning does have to take place after hours if you want to become proficient at what you do.

The last time I changed specialties, I spent several hours each week at home doing continuing ed from the specialty organization pertaining to my job. It helped me feel less at sea in a new specialty I knew little about, and it showed my employer that I was serious about becoming a valued member of the staff. I also copied pertinent policies and took them home for review, e.g. what to do if a pt. has a reaction to a particular chemotherapeutic agent.

If you find doing work at home too onerous, then you should probably seek employment in an area that is less demanding. You can't have it both ways.

I'm getting irritated I kinda hope she doesn't change her avatar and the charge nurse IS reading this!

Wow this thread took a turn. Lol

Twerp?! I understand you're getting frustrated but I thought there was no name calling. Seeing how A lot is posters like to copy and paste the TOS. lol

It doesn't....

Let's carry on...as the newest good pop up and tattoo thread is being created. :)

Yeah, it should. This is really simple. You want to come online and complain about your preceptorship, we will let you know that you get out of it EXACTLY whatever you put into it.

...what are you doing in your life that you're "putting on hold" to take home binders and read them? Roller disco? Ice sculpture? People who act like they have these gigantic lives chock full of activities really confuse me when they're spending hours of their day posting reply after reply on internet boards...but no time for P&P's!

Informational post. No response necessary in what is intended to be a frivolous thread:

Actually, it refers to Bullying.

Bullying that creates a horrible work environment, and may make them dread coming to work. (BTW, most of the "mean girls" I've observed on units aren't old enough to be COB's)

The media is filed with incidences where bullied people have harmed themselves or others when they couldn't take it anymore.

Then they can call it bullying. (Which I will still laugh at, because adults really should be embarrassed to claim they're being bullied.) "Violence" is offensive to the victims of violence.

To imply that any other activity I might have outside of my nursing career is as insignificant as roller disco is ridiculous. You sound like a child.

Clearly, as many have pointed out, I've already given out enough personal information as ammo, so I'm gonna leave it alone. Needless to say, spending my entire evening reading P&Ps is not appropriate, nor is it realistic. If it were, it'd be required.

And here's the other thing: if you ever, at any time, took the time to read my post, you would see at no point was my "complaint" about my preceptor. At. No. Point.

I know, I'm sure you're out spending every extra minute of every day fulfilling altruistic endeavors. Most people in your situation are. Feeding the homeless, etc. etc.

Do you only do what's required of you? Did you learn nothing from "Office Space?" LOL

I know. I'm so worthless that I couldn't possibly be doing anything except lazing around and not contributing a thing to society OR the field of nursing.

To clarify, my orientation period was 12-weeks long. I work in a 1:6 Medical Inpatient unit. I do 3x 12-hour shifts a week. I also rotated through three different preceptors. Case in point: 12-weeks is not nearly enough time to look up every single protocol/procedure and commit it to memory when you're taking 1/2 of the patient load of your preceptor and you don't see every single patient condition you'll ever encounter walking through the door.

My point is that if someone, just barely off orientation, tells you a patient is going south and requests help as they're not familiar with a rather large order set that comes in, it would seem to me that, as the resource nurse, someone should assist, ESPECIALLY if they don't have a patient assignment.

And again, this thread is about students/nurses posting on this forum. As in: not a real live situation happening in front of you right this second.

You're always going to be learning something new. Not just as a new grad but through your whole career. So you're always going to have to know where to look/who to ask for answers.
