Student Nurse "Help me!" Threads

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I think I'm done answering student nurse help me threads here.

I've gotten rude answers, or they never even bother coming back to the thread to acknowledge the answers they received.

Some will ask life choice questions like "Where should I move?" or "Where should I apply?". Do they think someone is going to offer them a job here, is that why they start these threads? You have the whole internet to research towns, cities, regions, but instead you post a thread asking a bunch of strangers where you should move?

Some help me threads seem to be 'Help me do my homework' threads.

Thank you for reading.

It's kind of similar to new posters who reply in the international threads who have no knowledge of the working conditions, employment conditions or education/training of nurses wherever. They get upset when their misinformation is pointed out or they never return to the thread to see if some poor poster followed their info

I often feel the same way, Emergent. There have been many times I've taken a great deal of time and thought into an answer, and the OP never even says so much as "Thank you." It's irritating. Or, worse yet, they immediately start arguing and telling you why you are wrong. Hey, if you know it all already, why did you ask?

So, I do very little advice ("advise") giving to newbies.

The worst!! Those are just awful! Sometimes I have to laugh at them. They likely don't have the humility needed to become a nurse!

But I'm likely wrong...

I enjoy helping. I find most students appreciative and participate. If you want help you need to show me your effort. I always ask what they posted...they don't come back? Their loss. When I say I won't do the homework for you and they get indignant and angry....guess who wanted the easy way out?

The ME TOO! Threads and e-mail addresses baffle me. Why on earth would you put that information out there? Do the work, look it up, come back and we will talk.

But I do enjoy helping the students.

I love helping, BUT, don't use and abuse me, EVER!

Amen. I love an engaged learner. Ask a followup question, show appreciation, anything. I helped someone with a resume here and it took me a little while- maybe 20 minutes. The member never returned to the thread. That leaves me reluctant to help again.

Maybe I should look for a sign of engagement before offering help (longevity on AN? Track record of previous posts?)

I dont mind helping students that want to learn at the same time. i dont like the ones that want it spoon fed to them without having to think.

Another oddity here are the "Did I pass?" threads. They tell how many questions they answered before the computer testing program ended (I was pre-computer testing, so bear with me here)

That seems strange to me, to post a thread asking people, who are totally unfamiliar with your academic abilities or record, how well you did on your NCLEX.

Live, in person, my pat answer to the unanswerable question is usually "I'm sorry, my psychic bone is broken" or "my crystal ball is out for repairs".

I don't answer too many on the student/pre-nursing student boards nowadays. Just too many times I have taken time for a thoughtful response, given good clear information, only to have the original poster never return to the thread (or if s/he did, no acknowledgement given). I love helping students, mentoring the new nurses, truly I do. But who likes to feel like they have simply wasted their time?

I remember seeing a post where someone said that after hearing the description of questions his peers got on NCLEX, he/she "knew" h is/her test was harder, so he/she felt he/she should be even more proud of passing.

Huh???

Emergent, I was also one of the pencil, paper, 2 day test takers.

LOVE hearing the newbies witch and moan about having to wait over a weekend or holiday for results. Like you two, I took the test with 1500 of my closest friends and had to wait about 90 days for results, while working with the now-antiquated "GN" after my name.

As to the homework posts??? My students range from smart and dedicated to "wouldn't let him watch my cat for the weekend". And for some reason known only to the pixies, the former tend to question themselves and hold back, while the latter are SURE they are darned near ready to perform neurosurgery!!

I am a working LVN & RN nursing student. I am always asking questions to others & I love the "normal" questions asked here on AN. What do I mean by normal? I too find it extremely frustrating how so many people don't want to work. I found my hospital job as an LVN myself. No one helped me (2 yrs ago) & I have no one to thank except for me or nurse manager. I've always found resume or networking questions to be frustrating. Let's see....you want a job EXCEPT you can't drive more than 10 miles one way, you can't work at a SNF, you can't work weekends but you want to work? I don't get it. There is no magic trick or connection that will ever get you that dream job, unless you are just lucky. The magic trick is to drive however far you need & work where ever you can to gain confidence & experience. Once you have that, you become marketable.
