Would you press criminal charges if one of your students took money from your wallet? The student has been expelled from the program but has not returned the money If I press charges theres a chance I could get my money back and hopefully she would be prevented from applying to another nursing school... Just looking for opinions. Thanks!
Just a quick update... As of December 23, 2010 the student was found guilty of theft under $1500.00. She's been ordered by the Department of Justice to pay $35.00 in court costs and $94.00 in restitution. I hope to receive a check any day now. Thanks again for all of the support and opinions!
so, is thats it?? did you get any additional money? despite the measly 129 dollars she has to pay, wat else will happen to her?
She was found guilty of the theft charge, and will always have that on her record now.
What else would you have happen? Prison?
Why would she have to pay back more than what she took? There aren't exactly any punitive damages in a case like this; it doesn't qualify for additional money for "pain and suffering." She was charged, convicted (found guilty), and punishment is paying the restitution. Simple enough.
I think the thing that is being missed is that OP worked for that money. It was HER money. For someone to go into her purse to take what did not belong to her was not wrong, it was criminal. Raggity, I applaud you for following through with the charges.
Just a side note. I had a man that was homeless and brought to my facility as a charity case. His family had no money to bury him, but with a little help from our agency they could barely afford to have him cremated. While going through his pant pockets to look for ID for the funeral home I found over 250.00. I got so excited, no it wasn't payday for me. It was help for his family. Nobody was in the room when I found the money, I could have taken it and nobody would have ever known. I didn't, because I couldn't live with myself. I can just see this student in the same situation, she would be thinking, CHACHING. It is sickining.
